So I played FINAL FANTASY X For The First Time...

JRPGs don't get more legendary than Final Fantasy X. A game with staggering influence that would define the genre for decades. After 21 years, I have finally played this game from start to finish. I would love to give you the TLDR, but this is Retro Rebound's longest video yet. With that much to say, I'll have the video do the speaking for me on where I lie with one of the most loved games of all time.

he is not really that much of Aeon, those beasts are basically revered figures from the past who worked along side yunalesca to end Yu Yevon's fanatical designs to crush all of spira and force everyone to embrace an eternal cycle of suffering until only his dream reality remains. the Zanarkand Tidus comes from is essentially that dream reality and everything within it is just fabricated hopes and dreams of those who became Fayth under Yu Yevon's cult but some of these Fayth grew tired of dreaming and wanted to rest in peace with those they lost to war in the Farplane and so they began to plot Yu Yevon's demise by bringing their ideal "champion" into the real world to destroy Sin and end their miserable dreary dreamscape. Yu Yevon ofc saw what they were plotting and to punish them he would purposely lose Sin so he could create a new one just to spite them an crush their hopes. and so they had to gamble one last time using Tidus as the catalyst to end Sin, Dream Zanarkand, and Yu Yevon. and this worked out for them perfectly because Jecht was a Sin who could be swayed to their favor and Tidus' link to him is precisely what they needed to bring down Sin an open the way to Yu Yevon's domain the "Tower of the Dead" located deep within Dream Zanarkand. Where the party will confront the man/parasitic undead thing he became and silence him forever.

For a time in my life I didn't get overly emotionally involved in pretty much ANYTHING. As a child and early teen I was hyper emotional but in late teens to early 20's that just seemed to stop. THIS game actually opened up my closed off emotions with the scene where Tidus disappears and Yuna's confession of love. The way she composes herself after falling through him and you think she'll just lay there forever; then saying she loves him without looking at him. Heart breaking.

  • @NoctLightCloud

@@NoctLightCloud I disagree. Her staying with her back turned so that Tidus can't see her, was exactly in character for her. Quiet, reserved and timid. It's not like she kept into his arms and shouted it. She whispered it so only he could hear her and even then it was after she finally pushes herself off the floor. She had her outburst and in the moment she fell through him. Also he was disappearing and she though she'd never see h again, so "I love you.". Fits even better. Beside WHY thank him? For making her fall in love then tearing that all away??

@@blazingflameable That’s where I think the localization team absolutely killed it with FFX. They had lots of limitations with trying to fit English dialogue into the Japanese timing without making it seem out-of-place to a Western audience. And all of this in 2001, a time when a fully-voice-acted game was completely new. Sure, there were some small awkward moments (“withYunabymyside”), but all-in-all, the core emotions were preserved and culturally translated with grace. I think it’s better to make slight dialogue changes but preserve the FEELING and EMOTION of the scene, rather than translate every word precisely. Yuna saying, “I love you,” in English was a perfect choice to create the same tear-jerking effect for Western audiences that the original dialogue did in Japanese for Japan.

19:55 This question was explained when Yuna performs the first Sending you witness after a Sin attack near the beginning of the game. • @josephstigall7694

its not so much as "resisting". You can see it when Jyscal Guado tries to come back to Spira from the Farplane. Its when someone dies but feels so strongly that their purpose isnt fulfilled yet that they don't turn into fiends. Auron's purpose was to fulfill the promise he made to Jecht to take care of Tidus. Seymours' purpose was to become sin. This is what keeps them alive.

I heavily disagree that the sphere grid system is “drawn out” and leveling should happen “quietly in the background”,what I dislike the most about modern jrpgs is that I have no agency on my characters getting stronger,it’s just grinding to see a number go up,just get the number as high as the lvl gated content requires, that’s it, and at this point just get rid of leveling,it’s redundant and pointless, either involve the player in the process or get rid of it.

I agree to a point, the grid system is pretty fun, even if you have no idea how to work it, its build a character, and people love that. However, at some point, it is drawn out, and at some point grinding sphere's to make Tidus a caster, or Lulu a tank, is pointless.

Initially its really fun early on, however, still drawn out end game, when you've already mastered your class. Even with advanced sphere grid, it takes 10+ hours to turn Lulu for example, into a tank/dps. Which is pointless of course, since everyone has a role. Ultimately you're gonna be chasing down certain powers you want on everyone (Haste, Cura, Regen, etc). Just replayed this with my husband. You can hit the triangle button (on playstation) to guard during fights. If you switch in every single party member in every single fight, and at least have them guard, then switch them back out if you want, then every single party member will get AP at the end of the fight and level up. Doing this throughout the whole game as much as possible made it so that nearly every single boss fight was a walk in the park. Yes, there was one or two, like the Yunalesca fight, where there are specific mechanics that caused an issue, but as long as you know when each phase happens, and you have a particular strategy to deal with it, then it's not that hard to handle. The biggest frustrations we had were actually with chocobo racing and lightning dodging.

I wish you'd gotten to play this game on PS2 when it released. The pc modes you used did you no favors, & had you played the game in it's "real" time they would've been the last thing would've wanted. In it's day, FF 10's quality & feature set was so far beyond anything to come before it that "pushing thru" was the last thing on anybody's mind. For most of us, playing this game was an act of pure joy, & as sad as the ending was, the fact that the game was over was the saddest thing of all.

After recently replaying it I've definitely come to enjoy this games story so much more than before. How much interaction that takes place between the characters is also fantastic. Each town or city you visit seeing your companions scattered around gathering info or being amazed by the attraction or species they come across 👌 the wisdom that's shared in and outside of combat by Auron and Lulu is another touch I appreciated. Combat holds up it's basic turn based stuff but it feels refreshing to play these days so i probably enjoyed it more than i should have. Only thing i dislike about this game is the sphere grid being a bit too much rather than every character having their own (personal issue) and the random encounters is something I'm glad didn't stick in today's Jrpg's

Dream Zanarkand was a well concealed city protected by Sin. I heard it was near the Baaj temple & difficult to access, in fact Auron said to Tidus that only Jecht can actually transport people there. So I think it's impossible to access, especially with a invincible guardian killing anyone who goes near it.

This game is in my top 3 for sure. I think you’re right about it being a product of its time. Playing this as a kid I had never played a game with the amount of detail, depth and emotion. The music, the graphics, the cutscenes, the story. It left a mark on me! I got all the secret aeons and characters unique weapons. Looking up guides on my dial up internet and keeping them in folders. I remember the monotony of traversing the large landscapes and getting pulled into a fight every 10 metres (the plains part) but you somehow have more patience and awe playing this in the early 2000’s where you don’t have hundreds of other games under your belt to compare it to.

I think your mistake was jumping away from the PS2 version for fast-forward. Not only did that open the FFX-2 can of worms, but it opens up the possibilities of you hearing the worse "remastered" version of the OST, the crappier character faces, losing your immersion because you have to KZread cutscenes, and missing out on some of the nuance of the story. This is the kind of game you want to take your time with, not rush.

I have a few questions for this review. 1) You mention you dislike the fact that you game over if the current party is down. Does this bother you because if a party member is alive you could swap? In other jrpgs you also get a game over if the current party is down. I don't get Steiner back once Zidane and the good characters died. 2) The short animation for summons was also on the EU version. This is not a new feature for the remaster versions. I couldn't find info on which versions has this though. 3) You find the story complicated. I actually think it's more straight forward then most. Convulated with the dream zanarkand and stuff, i agree there. Also the "refusing to die"-state could be explained better 4) Did you suggest the game is too hard? Imho it's one of the easiest. Maybe you were rushing too much? Most enemies have a designated party member for fighting it. Those giants can be armor broken if i remember correctly 5) About that cutscene movie part... that is really unfortunate. In the footage for this video with the youtube search it shows dansg08's video, which probably everyone gets as the first entry since at least... idk. It shows up easily and it features only the FFX cutscenes not FFX-2. Still bad that you got this spoiler just because someone lumped the cutscenes together.

Actually Tidus and Yuna never confessed their feelings at all at Macalania. Yuna simply began crying partly due to all the plot revelations, Tidus comforts her and they kiss. In fact, Yuna never got to confess her feelings to Tidus at all. In the original Japanese version, Yuna only formally thanks him at the end. Thats the entire reason for X-2's existence, Yuna sees the sphere with a man that looks like Tidus, and sets out to see if its really him, so she can tell him how she really feels.

this game helped me through a tough time. And it's the first final fantasy i played that had voice acting. It's not perfect by Any stretch of the imagination. But it's still 100% one of my favorite video games of all time.

i've not played all the final fantasy games myself but this is in the top 5, i think i like IV better as a story, would love an HD remake of it on modern consoles, though without the FF7 remake treatment where they totally change the story

Great video!! You’ll find X-2 is EXTREMELY different. I played this when it first came out. It was my first “real” RPG (I had also played Golden Sun) and I was blown away by the cutscenes. Love the game for the story and I literally cried at the end 😂 But I don’t think I’ll ever replay it as I’ll just be disappointed

In the PS2 era you have no idea how many players grind for a 100% in this game and I was one of them and I even flexed my playtime that I broke the 99 hours of gameplay. Good ol days XD

Full disclaimer this is my favorite game of all time. Been playing it on and off for 21 years. Although it’s hard to hear anyone be critical of something that I love so much, I found it difficult to argue with any of your criticisms. I was too young to realize many of the issues when I first fell in love with the game & now my love for the game allows to me ignore those issues. You nailed this, great job!

FFX means a lot to me. I started playing it when I was a kid like 7 yo, and my parents just divorced. After that, my father left us behind and I never see him again for YEARS. So I identified myself to Tidus and his relation with his father like "I hate you for what you did To us but you know you still are my old man, and I cannot wait to see you and tell you how much I hate you, but deep in my heart, all I want is To see you". I never had the courage To finish the game because I felt like finishing the game means going ahead in my life, leave all this stuff behind and move forward. I have full stats on my characters, 99 999 damages etc, but I just mess around in Spira, doing side quests, just not doing the final boss battle To finish the game. I am 25 now and I just finished the game 2 weeks ago. I spared an afternoon and said To myself ok man let's just get thru this and move forward. It was really hard for me (not the fights, I had maxed stats, the bosses are Really easy with my characters at full stats), and I cryed at the end. Man this game helped me SOOOO much to escape the sadness of my childhood. And it's only now, almost 20 years later that I had the courage To finish it. And btw, you did not talk about the OST, but some of them are pure masterpieces (wandering flame I feel U). I still use to put ffx ost in background when I work. Final Fantasy X, my favorite off all time 💖

I cannot sympathize with your experience as my father was always around but in that very distant "I don't want to be here" way. Turns out he and my mom were never happy and stayed together simply for the families sake. The high five at the ended literally emotionally broke me down to a sobbing mess. To this day I make it a point to play and finish the game every year. This game is one of very few that have made me actually cry and it hold an easy number 1 spot for me followed closely by The Last of Us.

Pinning a couple of corrections for clarity sakes: 1) Turbo mode is the same here as it is in Trails. Combat animations/exploration are sped up, not the story beats. There was no "rushing" involved especially since this took me a month to chip through and I produced a 30+ minute video on the game. 2) Active Time Battle - Not action turn based. I am unsure where I read that, but still falls on me! Also, not the first to go turn based. Apologies for that. 3) Kilika is destroyed and not Besaid, I double checked my notes and misread this one during the recording. Hope you all still manage to enjoy the video.

IMO FFX tops FFVII as the best game in the series (and I've played almost every FF game). The beautiful scenarios, the amazing OST, the cutscenes and the story merge so well that it becomes one of the most immersive experiences that I ever had in front of a console.

You missed a lot of points in the narrative and story. This is very difficult to like because you know you're dealing with a cult classic, yet at the same time are trying to zoom through it at 4x speed.

That's unfair to suggest considering the 2/4x speed only applied to combat. It's the same thing as Trails where combat is sped up (when you want) and the story sections are as they always have been.

  • @call-me-potato

I don't think you understand my point. I think it's clear you played the game for content sake, and not to enjoy it. And that's fine considering your profession. But it's clear that the 4x speed out of combat somehow translated to you not grasping some of the finer mechanics of the game. Where do people go when they're killed and not sent? It's mentioned multiple times that they become fiends, particularly when they die with negative feelings. Auron, Seymour, and the rest of the folks who are "dead" but alive are present for certain reasons. This game has some pretty rich narrative, themes, and plot points and it seems very little of them stuck with you.

I'm not trying to gate keep and say "the only way to enjoy the game is to play it fully with 100% of your time and attention otherwise you're not gonna enjoy it fully", but I think my feedback is still fair. Playing a game at 4x speed will never let you enjoy the intricacies of it, the same way you don't chug down fine wine. This game means a lot to people, and you mentioned that a few times, and as someone this game means a lot to, I think it deserves better. You're not playing a sonic game...

greatest game of all time. the story is the best. delivery is meh! but what they tell is fuckin DEEP, especially when you compare this story to our very own here on earth. war, religion with blind belief, famine, depression, rebellion. it covers it all. there is a reason i have bought this game on 7 different consoles, the same with RE4. its just great.
