So I played FINAL FANTASY VI For The First Time...

After playing Final Fantasy IX for the first time, many have requested this be my next retro foray. Apparently, Final Fantasy VI is a dark story about war and hope, especially for its time. Now that I have completed it, I am seriously impressed by this 1994 JRPG on many levels.

Final Fantasy 9 is the best modern Final Fantasy, from 7 to 15 ... none comes close to FF9.... And old FF beat modern ones, yeah, 1 ,2 , 4, 6 are currentlyt my faves but I have played only the horrendous modern remake in 3d of FF3j, I need to play the best TRUE Famicom original version to appreciate its master class retro feel. In my 20's, I played all of the FFs up to XIII, which came out around that time. No nostalgia factor, just got into it after my girlfriend convinced me to give them a try. I played them in random order. VI was my favorite out of all of them. The characters, the narrative, the overall experience of it. It's simply a masterpiece. No RPG beats VI for me.

I remember when I first played FFVI. I rented Fatal Fury and Final Fantasy on a whim. I played FF6 until the first scene with the snail, died, and put it aside to play Fatal Fury. I didn't really understand the concept of an RPG back then. With only three more days before I had to return it, I gave it one more chance and fell in love. Was really disappointed when I had to return it. I worked a good portion of the summer to try and raise the money for a copy of my own. I was fourteen so I was only at the edge of being able to get a regular job and had to do odd jobs to get money. The day I finally raised the money, I stepped on a bee nest, was stung four times and ended up getting sick and couldn't go. I had to try again another day and was really disappointed. I had to rely on my parents for transportation and it was only when they felt like going that I could go (we lived in a small town--it took a while to get anywhere.) By the time I got a chance to go again, I must have went to four or five shops, since the game was almost ready to be pulled from shelves. There was no Amazon back then. When I finally got it, it was like a little treasure. I devoured it in days and it redefined what I thought a video game could be. It was the first video game that touched me on an emotional level and has been one of my favorites ever since.

Final Fantasy 6 will always be my favorite FF even compared to masterpieces like 7, 9 or 10. I even like it more than Chrono Trigger since I got more attached to the FF6 cast compared to Chrono Trigger. Squaresoft definitely made a lot of great JRPGS and strategy games during the Super Famicom era. I'd recommend you trying Front Mission (a remastered version for Switch is coming out) and Bahamut Lagoon. Front Mission got a GBA release if I'm not mistaken, but Bahamoot Lagoon never got an english translation so you'd have to rely on fan subs and emulators to play it. I played both of them in their original Japanese version then replayed them when the fan subs was released.

To this day FF6 is still the best game of the franchise, in my opinion. The story, characters, music, so much stuff was done so well. Me, and a friend, cooperatively played through it when it released on the SNES. It's still one of the very few games I play through at least once a year. Such a great way for the series to say good bye to the SNES. No other RPG made me as enthralled as FF6 did, and not many games have since. Games today just aren't as fascinating as they used to be back in those days, for me. Developers actually cared about their craft then, and Square was really at the top of their game at that time before they merged with Enix nine years later. They haven't been the same since. As a sidenote, it was really great to see, and battle, Kefka again in FF XIV. And just installed the Pixel Remaster of FF6. I know I'll love it, but I'm not enthusiastic about some of the changes. (actual voices singing the opera being one of the main ones) Still, it's an absolute classic and one that any RPG fan needs to play at some point.

You don't have to go back for Shadow, you just have to wait for him. Don't jump down to your air ship. Just wait for the clock to run down and Shadow WILL appear in the last second. You missed out on most of Shadow's backstory. Also, Celes won't attempt suicide if you save Cid. Catching the fastest moving fish and feeding only them to Cid WILL nurse him back to health. He'll give her the raft and she just leaves the island.

@@ALeafOnTheWind42 the game doesn't really tell you much about how to save Cid other than to feed him fish. You just assume any fish will do. But it's only the fast moving fish (the healthiest fish I guess) that helps Cid regain his strength. I beat the game several times on the SNES back in the 90s without saving Cid, and beat the game again on the PSOne and yet again on GBA both in the 2000s without saving Cid. It wasn't until I replayed FFVI Advanced for the GBA (played it on the Retron 5 so I could record the game footage for a future review I'm planning to do) that I actually managed to save Cid. So I have video footage of how the scene plays out when you save Cid. But I hear a lot of reviewers talk about the emotional power of the attempted suicide scene, yet they never talk about how the dynamic of that scene changes if you do manage to save Cid. I suppose it's just that many people think it's impossible to actually save Cid and don't know that the entire dynamic of that scene can change if he's saved. But as for Shadow, I have NEVER left him behind. Even on my first playthrough. I was willing to potentially blow up all my characters waiting for Shadow to show up. No Shadow, no jumping to the air ship... lol.

Saving Cid means missing out on the suicide scene, which imo is among the most impactful scenes in the game You're meant to experience it Saving Cid is more like a new game plus thing where you try to complete as much of the game as you can

  • @NexusNine

    @NexusNine

    2 жыл бұрын

@@hiyukelavie2396 I disagree. Saving or not saving Cid are both equally legitimate ways to play through that scene, and both are meant to be experienced as part of the core playthrough. Saving Cid isn't just an added little bonus feature in the game, it's there for a reason and is meant to be experienced just as much as the alternative. Failing to save Cid is meant elicit a sense of hopelessness, leading to Celes attempting to commit suicide because it leads her to think everything in her life is just gone and there is no point in living any longer. But saving Cid is meant to do the opposite, to elicit a sense of hopefulness. By saving Cid, it allows Celes to find strength in the idea that the others are still alive, which in turn gives her purpose to live. By saving Cid, it gives her strength in believing that she IS capable of making a difference. Both scenes are profound in their own way. But this is what I'm talking about when I say people go on and on about how powerful the attempted suicide scene is without even bringing up that saving Cid is a possibility, and how that scene changes for doing so. The legitimacy of the scene doesn't change by saving Cid. Both versions are equally legitimate regardless to who thinks what version of that scene is the more profound experience. Ultimately, the remainder of the game remains completely unchanged regardless to what scene you get here. It's not like Shadow, where leaving him behind profoundly changes the endgame.

I bought it in 1995 in a small video game store. The store itself was a rarity at the time in Germany. It was also when only a fraction of games was released here (and only a fraction of those were translated). Final Fantasy games didn't get a German release before FFVII. So, I went into that store that day, a young teen, was asked if I looked for something specific and, having some savings and birthday money to waste, said, "Something like Zelda." He sold me FFVI, an import title plus a device that would allow me to play NTSC games on my PAL console. The game alone was 150,- DM (which would be about 76,- Euro today, which are about 85,- Dollar), plus the adapter, another 50,- DM (~26,- Dollar). A bit over 100,- Dollar to play one game. This was normal btw back then for imported games. Well, long story short, loved it from the title screen on. I hadn't heard of Final Fantasy before, the most complex jrpg-style game I played so far was Secret of Mana, and I was absolutely blown away. Anyway. Got to the floating island. Fled. Found Relm with Interceptor and suddenly, I had a bad feeling about Shadow, my favourite character back then. This was pre-internet. I stopped for the day. Went back to the game store the next day after school and spent my savings on the (beautiful) printed game guide with my last savings (another 50,- DM, the average price for a Nintendo game back then. I can't find a decent converter to help me stress how expensive this was back in the 90s, especially for a young teen. The average novel was around 10,-, hardcover maybe 20,- and 50,- would be high-quality illustrated/photography-heavy hardcover books). Flipped through the pages and learned that my bad feeling was spot on. When I went home that day, I started over. About 40 hours of gameplay in. I didn't care. Shadow dying? Not on my watch. So. Savings of the year gone. Completely broke. 40 hours/half a playthrough down the drain. 100% worth it, zero regrets.

Yup, one of the best JRPGs of all time: FF6 Not many games will ever be able to capture what this game did. Many have tried, but just don't feel the same after you've played FF6 and how it put the formula together. Also the music is good enough that it can be released in its own album, played in live orchestras, show up in odd places with fans whistling to it/playing it on piano/remixing it/humming it/clips played on KZread videos/etc., or even get played in the parade of nations at the Olympics (no joke, it has literally done all these things and more). There's a chance that people who have never played this game may have come across its music somewhere else in one form or another even if they don't know what it's from.

FF6 is a masterpiece! I played it when it released for the SNES back in 1994, and it's been my favorite game of all time ever since! As excited as I am for the Pixel Remaster (today!), seeing that they've gone the extra mile with FF6, I'm still waiting on a proper 3D remake! Imagine all the iconic scenes of this game in glorious 3D, and casting off the shackles of the SNES cartridge and really let the ambition of the original game shine in a modern game.

I'll take a 3D remake for sure because it's my favorite RPG of all time. But I'd much rather see it redone with modern pixel art, detailed sprites with fluid full animation, animated espers and enemies, lighting effects, etc. Pixel art can be so good with today's hardware and tools, far beyond what they could do back then. That's what I was hoping for with the pixel remaster but I knew from the previous ones that wasn't going to happen. They also need to stop with the censoring, it's absurd. Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (minus the stupid vertical screen) is what I'd like the battles to look like. The towns and dungeons could be done similar to Ocotopath Traveler although better details (textures), and the overworld map would just need to be redone, maybe hand drawn water colors.

I still own the prima games strategy guide because at 11 years old, i had no idea how to get terra back. It really was one of my favorite games of all time, and now ive played through 3 different times, and plan on doing another 100 percent run of the game soon so people can truly enjoy it. I got back into Dungeons and Dragons recently for a Curse of Strahd campaign, and ultimately recreated Locke as my PC, with a bunch of his one liners and personality. It was just a game that really stuck with me for ages and i think about all the different aspects of replayability you really get from it where the story arcs can dramatically shift, and it really is in my mind, the best game in the franchise.

FF7 only garnered no much attention because it was the first FF game not to appear on a Nintendo console. The first FF game to be on disc, instead of cartridge. The first FF to have CG scenes and 3D rendered backgrounds. The first FF to have actual orchestrated music. The first FF game released in Europe. And at the time, being the most expensive game ever made. But as far as the story and characters go, it was highly lacking compared to FF6. Other than Aerith, you didn't connect to any other character really, unlike in FF6 where you actually cared about them all since they all had fully fleshed out stories. Well except for Mog, Gogo, Umara, and Shadow, but Shadow gave you a reason to care when he offers to sacrifice himself. Most reviewers, and critics, have almost all unanimously ranked FF6 over FF7 in the best of FF series games rankings. IGN - FF6 #1, while FF7 is #6. Digital Trends - FF6 #1, FF7 #7. Screenrant - FF6 #1, FF7 #3. Polygon - FF6 #1, FF7 #8. Inverse - FF6 #1, FF7 #7. Den of Geek - FF6 #1, FF7 #3. Kotaku - FF6 #1, FF7 #4. I can go on and on. The Hall of Fame is a joke to begin with, no one takes that 32 game exhibit seriously. Portal, Civilization, Half-Life, Castlevania, X-Com, Resident Evil, SimCity, among others are not in there, and far more deserving then say - Halo for instance.

The game does alot of subtle visual things, too, that you pick up on multiple playthroughs. The cliff Celes jumps from is similar in shape to the opera stage landing when she lets the flowers go, and she felt so much pressure to do what was necessary, even when she truly didn't know how, to get where they needed to go. The way they flesh her character out, without sexualizing her, in 1993, by putting her in situation after situation that were almost all impossible to prepare for sucks you right the fuck in and does not let go.

I've always said it and I'll say it again - if this had a remake on the scale of FF7 remake people's minds would be blown. I was actually around when the original FF7 came out. People stood in long lines at the gaming shops in the mall to get FF7 because FF6 was so good. FF7 was the first 3D final fantasy, but it was the previous one that cemented Square as a legendary gaming studio. And I want to reiterate, people stood in lines for a final fantasy game. I was one of them when I was a kid. Would be hard to imagine that nowadays. Great review though. I hope they remake more classics like this and Chrono Trigger (especially) eventually.

OK it's limited to combat and not like in secret of mana BUT the fact that they added this option I could play with my friend back then on the snes and it was godlike! Sharing this experience of FF6 with someone is unique, and I was really sad when the next FF games came out with only 3 characters roaster knowing it won't have that feature.. So yeah that made ff6 that little bit more unique as well. But the music, the characters, the story, it's just god tier level, I've never experienced something that good ever since. It’s a joy to see people living this for the first time. It’s my favourite hands down - and welcome to the club of those that let Shadow lie in rest without knowing…. ya know….

I've beaten FF7 Remake (not the original), FFX and FF9. Haven't beaten any others, but I do play 14 from time to time. I think 9 is my favorite

@@proxreckless1997 ff7 remake is trash I know some will argue. I wont support it cause they are selling out. They are selling it in parts and taking advantage of people. It's not that big for a modern game it's like a tenth of the size of ff15. So they cant use the excuse it's so big they had to make it in parts. That's a lie. They are taking advantage of fans cause they know they can sell out with the name of ff7. Add a little tifa fan service and people shut up.

Story wise, it confronts despair, hopelessness, and finding purpose and hope for the future better than almost anything I have ever seen, and by the end of it, you love and care about all of the characters.

Some fun facts: - Shadow can be saved by waiting until the last second before boarding. - You can miss Celes' suicide attempt completely by feeding as much good fish to Cid as possible (but at least Cid survives). - In the SNES version, the translation censored the suicide by calling it a "jump of faith"; but didn't censor the torture scene. It also censored the taverns, by changing them into cafés (common practice in SNES games) and the Holy spell name was changed to Pearl. - The opera song is fully voiced in the Pixel Remaster. I feel like a lot of the ideas in FFVI served as foundation for some aspects in FFVII.

For Gameboy games have you considered using the Gameboy player? You can softmod the Gamecube so you don't need the disc and it'd make capturing footage easier.
