Features I Like Most From The Big Four Multi Tool Manufacturers

Opinions on multi tools always vary, that is a given. In this video I wanted to share my thoughts on what I think each of the four major multi tool manufacturers does best.

I used my SuperTool 300 to replace a belt and a pull cord on my brother’s lawnmower this afternoon. The only other tool required was a torque wrench to put the blade back on. My wife is getting me a Surge for my birthday next month. I use a multi tool every day at work in the cabinet shop. Good video Ben.

With the Dual Force the first time I saw it and read about I know that I wanted it for the slip join pliers. I had already bought the Center Drive and Center Drive Plus and was really happy with them. I also carried a MP600 in combat and was happy with it. I ordered my Dual Force and paid more to get it the day it was released. I opened the box checked it started reading the paperwork and packaging only to find out unlike the Center Drive’s it was not made in the USA but in Taiwan. This from a company a year before that said “we are going to be moving most of our manufacturing back to the USA”. I think they pulled a fast one on customer’s by doing this. I go out of my way buying multi tools and knives made in the USA to support our manufacturing base.

Thank you, I would like to add my consideration: I'm working as a gardener and I'm using a Rebar everytime at work, this multitool has two characteristics very importants, the serrated edge and the ease of cleaning. on my job we use the serrated edge many times every day, it is fundamental. At the end of the day I arrive at home tired and my Rebar is very dirty full of mud, I need to clean it and the Rebar is so easy and quick to clean. I appreciate it a lot. I love the simplicity of these multitools.

My issues with the compound leverage system by sog are: #1 bad gear ratio (as you stated), and the bigger issue is that not a single review I have seen about these tools after more than a year of use show the plier head to fail almost 100% of the time. Could be quality control..or it could be simply that it's not feasible.

I've never bought a sog for that reason. Why should I have to open the handles 180° to get the pliers at the max opening? I think they are a joke that will put their name on any and everything. Some of the pliers look they have a good geometry, even some of the tools like the awl (as an example) looks like they would perform better than some of my other MTs.

While I believe that Victorinox probably makes the as-perfect-as-can-be-expected multitools in terms of internal tool sets and accessibility, there is one function that insures a Leatherman is on my belt daily: the bit driver. 5mm hex is a common fastener for furniture; I just used a 3mm hex to reassemble my son’s rear derailleur when it came apart during a bike ride. T6 & T8 are very common fasteners for folding knives. I can carry the equivalent of 4 bits in the same space as a single standard bit or one dual-ended bit; and since they are flat-ish, I can carry the equivalent of 14 bits with the Rebar bit adapter, or 22 bits with a Wave, Charge, or Skeletool (actually, 24 with the Skeletool since the Skeletool carries a second bit) in my back pocket. Leatherman’s bit system is brilliant.

When they make the next Leatherman Arc (the Arc Reactor) they need to replace the saw blade with that T-adapter that is on the Surge. This way you can have a removable file (diamond on one side, crosscut on the other) in it that can be used to sharpen the blade on the Arc Reactor while you are in the field. Next, put a full sized changeable bit screwdriver (removing the can opener on the side it's on now). Put the can opener in the same tool as the bottle opener. Pull the file (since you already have one) and replace it with a full length pry bar. Now you have the availability of more tools, can do field expedient repairs with the available tools, are more compatible with industry standard design, and haven't increased the weight and haven't lost capability. Also... Spring load the pliers in the Arc Reactor I'm sure it will never happen. On the other side of things that can never happen.... Make the Darc Reactor a slip "joint" project with Gerber. Use their center drive and Dual Force pliers.... This would be the ultimate one handed do it all tool. It would be like combining Batman and Iron man...

I have had many multi tools over the years Leatherman, SOG, Gerber. Never has a Swiss tool although I have had many SAK knives. They all have thier attributes and deficiencies. I EDC the Surge with the LM rachet driver, complete bit kit,and the DeWalt 1/4" reversible sockets 1/4-7/16 in the Surge leather sheath as a tradesman in a 9 building complex. I would like to see Leatherman develop a better set of tool pouches. I would like a Surge sized tool with a outside rachet driver like the Gerber Center Drive, the availability of a variety of T shank tools like a hawk bill knife, scraper, a large wire stripper.

as a electrician, the best multi tool that comes in handy for me is the leatherman surge, but if leatherman was to make the perfect multitool for a electrician it would have to be insulated first, 2nd a fatter plier head with stripping holes for conductors of 0.75 - 1.5 mm and 2.5 mm something like Kleins Electrician's Hybrid Plier Multi-Tool plier head. 3rd the gerber Magnetic 3.2" Center-Axis bit driver , 4th a builded in file for metal work, 5th saw, 6th tweezers and obviously a good knife

That 'flap' on the SOG tool at around 7:30 - does it serve any purpose other than getting in the way? Because it certainly does a great job of that. I'm not seeing much here that might compel me to transfer my 25+ years of loyalty to Leatherman multi-tools. The Victorinox tools are nice, but err, I already have a load of Leathermans!

I have used and carried an original set of SOG Powerlock pliers. Mine DOES NOT have the plate to cover the gears that give it compound leverage. It's made in USA and has a brown leather sheath. Still works now, no issues. It's beat up and scratched. Shorted out against a battery once which melted the plier tips a bit. The metal flaps are removable. I tried removing them since they do get in the way of rapidly accessing tools. I ran into the issue, that if you use it for crimping sta-cons it hurts your hand. The exposed edges are sharp enough to cause pain. Also the meat of my hands was contacting interior tools. So I put the flaps back on and left them on. There also is the issue where the flaps are stamped. So they are slightly warped. They never sit flat against the tool unless you clamp down. Which can cause the flap to tweak under load and pop out of their divot. Which can be annoying. The other problem with the powerlock. The old version, is that the tabs that hold the powerlock locking mechanism for the interior tools to the tool. They look like they were bent over while cold. So the metal looks stressed and has cracking like it's about to snap off. Haven't had it break but it looks like it could at any time. I consider the exposed gears a benefit if you decide to use the tool in a self defense manner. Filling your hand with it and using the gears as a blunt force weapon against a human would be devastating for sure. I ended up replacing the powerlock with a Super Tool 300. I had another avid multi-tool user talk me into a Leatherman. I had been avoiding them because I thought they were not USA made like my Gerber and SOG were. Each time I looked at one. There was no country of origin stamped on it. So from my experience. Tools with no pride of manufacture DO NOT have their country of Origin stamped on them. USA made stuff usually proudly says so right on it. So I assumed Leatherman was Chinese or India crap. Never looked at them again till that person came along.

Everyone is going to have their own opinion ...... but no mention of what I thought was your favourite tool scissors, you didn’t even mention Havalon and their replaceable scalpel blade, the SOG pliers bit holder (specifically Powerlitre room for improvement but extends the use of the smaller units), I also think SAK’s small curved pruning blade is actually better than the electricians .... the recurve functions the same if not better than the scallop on the electricians blade and the recurve for a small blade perfection. Leatherman seems like they have finally seen the light with minor improvements with small accessories in the NASA and the Garage offerings SAK style and some new. Guess what I really want is a custom service and design philosophy that allows modification/swapping of parts to easily make the tool what you need

Never quite seen the mass appeal of leatherman. Love Victorinox... Small but perfect, except for the pliers which are too small. But any tool that has a standard bit system and heft can incorporate into an edc system that has sockets, bits, etc as a backup. I have not quite put my new Gerber dual force through the paces, but so far the pliers seem fine and i love the driver... To me, if a bolt can be dealt with by a pliers, so be it... If not? That is why God invented ratchet sockets and vice grips. Looking forward to playing with SOG. I bought both my boys leatherman tools... on one, still trying to figure out how to take the bit out of the holder, under the clip! its been a few years now!🙄

Good video, thanks! Multi tool is a tool based on pliers. Based on this definition, there are only two multi-tools on your desk. Both are manufactured by Leatherman. Only Leatherman produces real pliers. The rest have only big names and interesting nested tools. But ...no more. I'm Russian. I have been actively using and assembling multi tools for 39 years. Leatherman has no competitors. ..........There are disadvantages. There is a floating build quality. But it's easy to get better. In recent years, due to "laziness", I just carefully choose when buying.
