Faulty Dishwasher Filling BUT NOT Washing - Trying to FIX

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hi, in this video I attempt to repair my dishwasher AGAIN!!!! This time, it fills and drains, but does not wash. It just stops working after filling the dishwasher with water. No water is getting to the spray arms. Can it be fixed?
The dishwasher in the video is a Zanussi ZDT41.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

Hey Vince, the impeller is not supposed to come off the shaft easily like you did, this generally means the impeller is faulty and there will be too much play and the impeller will catch on the housing. The only fix was a new circulation pump. P.s I am an appliance technician.

Make sure you top up the salt regularly. It is there to soften the water. At 2:14 you can see salt low light being on indicating there's not enough salt. Add salt even if you use 3in1 tablets. Also check your water hardness, you might get it from your water supplier, and adjust softening accordingly. There should be a table in the manual showing which setting you should use for which hardness level. Love your videos, keep them coming!

The circulating pump is the same as the Whirlpool and a lot of other brands. Mine quit cleaning or might I say I got around to fixing it the week before Christmas. I first blew out the holes in the spray arms but it still didn’t spray properly. I removed the pump an disassembled it. The bushings were worn enough the stater rubbed the side. My wife was in a hurry to have it fixed. I removed the bushings and replaced them with RC wheel ball bearings. Thou they are stainless steel I have read these will eventually rust and lock up. I have since cut two pieces of 1/2 in. Acetal rod 11mm in length. Drilled a 5mm hole in the center and mounted them in my drill press. Then turned down half, 5.5 mm to 10 mm with a small file. I kept the old bushings with the o-rings and plan to use the o-rings on my home made bushings. The old bushings were made of graphite probably to wear quickly. Acetal will out last graphite 10x. The bushings and o-rings cannot be purchased separately from appliance parts store. If the large o-ring leaks you have to buy a new pump. Not me! I’ll make my own bushings, use the o-rings from the old bushings and replace the large o-ring with a new #235 o-ring.

The salt reservoir inside _is_ the water softener. Does the exact same thing as a home water softener. What is common, though, is forgetting to refill the salt. Now that I have seen what it does to the pump, I will make sure I refill mine on a regular schedule.

My mate vice, those pumps goes bad from bushings and the liquid inside of the rotor is ferromagnetic fluid so once they fail is impossible fix it, also those pumps They commonly fail in the wash machine so prepair for dismantle one 🤣 I know it coz I repair wash machines/dishwasher machines and the common faulty is those pumps, first They start to make noise then to get stuck and the last stuff is fry the coil, in the worse case the pump frys the drain circuit in the circuit board (commonly in a samsung wash machine, in fact I hate those friking machines) So here we go my two cents

I have a similar pump on my machine. The graphite bushings had worn in an eccentric hole, causing the stator to hit the side of the casing, sometimes stalling the motor. I could not source the bushing, so I rigged a nylon drill bushing in a rubber washer at each end. It's been nearly a year and the fix is still holding with the machine used nearly every day. I had to run a reset cycle on the machine to get it to heat water again after it threw codes.

That play in the impeller, is to make sure the motor runs the right way. Those induction motors can run either way. On switch on, it is 50/50 whether it starts the right way round. If it's wrong, that clutch kicks it back the right way and it then continues the right way.

Quick troubleshooting on this one! If you had a clamp meter you could have easily tested the current draw of the pump motor safely and verified that it was drawing excessive current when the rotor wasn't turning. They allow you to test current draw without breaking the circuit as you would have to do with a standard multimeter. Cheap ones run around $20-$30. which is good enough if you just do occasional testing and don't need real accuracy. You just hook it around one wire and it reads the current through induction. Works on ac and dc. Can even help verify shorts in electronics.

I think its mostly trial and error. You google the model, hope for a repair diagram or parts shop... If you can't find it, you look for others from the same brand and then just compare the broken part in your hand to the pictures of the parts online. I don't think he can really "teach" this in a video, it's just taking the time to dig around the internet.

Vince, it looks like you don't have any salt in your salt tank. if you want your heating element to last longer, I would advise you to fill it up, salt in the all in one tablets is not enough for hard water areas. plus the motor you just replaced is called a recirculation pump. Good btw

I wonder if the bearings eventually gave up on the old one after fighting against the obstructions for so long, if the impeller was being twisted off center it could start shaving the shaft.

The play you felt was the impeller worked free from the shaft, the humming was the shaft turning on it's own.
