easiest fix - Whirlpool dishwasher fills/drains but doesn't run
Watched a lot of videos of folks doing a LOT of work to fix this issue. this is an easy fix to avoid a complete removal of components. Model not shown but if your drain layout looks the same I am sure you will be set. Attempted after resets, power off and on, button sequence failed to resolve. Yes I mistakenly put upper arm on lower at the end but caught myself. Runs like a champ again

watched several other videos, pulled the d/w, removed pump... it was clean... watched this one, repeated your process.... worked like a charm.. in fact, spraying better than it had been when new!! Got this d/w as scratch/dent from big box for $300 (retail $600.00), so wasn't happy with the idea of having to spend $125 for a new pump... thanks for your hint!!!! new sub...

Did not, for a second, think this would fix my dishwasher! It was filling and draining, so why would plunging fix it?! Low and behold the plunging worked! So easy! So quick! Much love to you for providing us this simple fix!

Thank you so much you fixed my dishwasher.
**UPDATE** Sadly it started doing the just filling and draining after running a load after dinner. Looks like it's either the Circulation pump motor or the inlet valve on my Whirlpool. I just changed my heating element litterally yesterday then this happened! I found this video and tried it not only did I plunge the crap out of the dishwasher I also plunged my disposal side and it worked!!!!!! Thank you so much for this
You are my HERO! Solve my issue if the washer filling but not running, and then when I hit cancel it would empty. Thank you for your wisdom! My DW is a Whirlpool WDF530PAYW3.
Genius... Incredibly simple... Almost too simple. Wow! Thank you! 🙌
Thank you tons.. I have been stumped for three days trying to figure why my Whirlpool wasn’t washing. Works for now.
You saved me lots of money! This was the same issue with mine. So glad I came across your video because I was gonna buy a new water intake valve , pump and god knows what else. Who would of thought I just had to plunge the $hit outta my dishwasher. And yes set a lot of towels down when you do this because you have to plunge violently and believe me when I tell you it’s not only your floors that will get soaked. 😂 Thank you so much for this upload!
Just saved me $275, was skeptical but how can you not try something so simple. You are the GOAT for this video!
A lifesaver! We were worried that we would have to call someone out, but it worked! We even used a larger plunger. As long as you get a seal, it still should work!
After hours of searching, this was the fix i was searching for. Bought a 3 dollar mini plunger from home depot and it did the trick for my clogged whirlpool. Thank you for sharing!
I tried this and one other thing before powering up my dishwasher, and at least one of them fixed it (cleaned the compellor motor-had a hair wound in it). Just so grateful to have a working dishwasher again and grateful to save several hundred dollars on replacement. Thank you.
Was about to spend $250 to replace the circulation pump when I came across your video - and for $3- (plunger) it solved the issue - i'll make it a 6 month routine - many thx buddy
Thank you! I was just about to pull my dishwasher out and start taking things apart when I found your video…worked like a charm! Thank you!!!
This is the best video I’ve ever found!! Worked like a charm. For anyone wondering pay close attention to how he plunged with force in the up direction!! Thank you sir

This is why I’m glad I have the older Whirlpool dishwasher that has a built in food chopper and no manual cleaning filters. Gotta love those Powercleans and ultrawashes!!!
Thank you SOOOOOO much. I was about to buy a new dishwasher and this worked! The hardest part was locating a small plunger, but I found a sink plunger with a short t-handle at Lowes and it did the trick.
Thank you so much! It worked! After three tries, it was finally dislodged and it’s now spraying like it used to. Without cutting off the electricity or taking apart the dishwasher!
You are truly a GOD! I was confused about this all day. Thought it was the latch like other videos said. Was about to say F it and buy a new one but found this video last minute. Start the dishwasher, when it stops does nothing, open it up - it should be filled with water on the bottom. Take off spray arm and take out filter, grab short plunger and go to town. 3 or 4 times should do the trick. Put spray and filter back on and resume. Good to go!
Wow, yep work the same way. I had water in that area after repeated draining. So I poured a pot of water in there to fill it up more. Than took the filter out and started plunging like you did. I plunged 3 times just to be sure, really hard. I put the filter back in and the spray arm and closed the machine. The washer started, it work perfectly again. The washer spraying water like normal. Wow a simple fix from a house plunger. The great things you find on KZread. Wow thanks much for this one. Really thank you.. 12/11/2022
Omg Iam so grateful for this video. I have been trying to fix my dishwasher for days. The plunging worked. Just for showing up the technician wanted 75.00 and then charge me for repairs. I like that u went straight to the point. I give u 5 stars
Ditto the previous comment. Not for one second did I think it would work either, but I figured I'd try it before spending my Sunday night pulling out my dishwasher. My plunger was different from his and the my dishwasher drain hole is not round like in the video So, in order to get better plunging power I filled up the bottom of my dishwasher with water and then went to town plunging. Then closed the door and turned it on and low and behold the wash cycle worked!!! My wife thinks I amazing. I might add this to my yearly maintenance tasks.
Wow.where was this video last week I've fought my dishwasher for days watcher this video followed what he did washer works like new keep posting very helpful and can save someone lots of money
Thanks a lot for pointing me in the right direction. Have a 13 year old KitchenAid, KUDE70. Turned the unit over and removed the modular motor/impeller from the housing. Was all gunked up. Seems to have overheated since it was "stuck" and deformed the plastic coated rotor. Put it back together after cleaning and it runs like a charm. Saved big $$ as the motor assy is no longer available alone. Looking for a vintage model to scavenge the motor off off.
I also ran the garbage disposal for a few minutes with hot water running and this seemed to flush/suck the line clean. Lastly, I took the air gap cap off and I clipped the top piece of the air gap and then drained the dishwasher with a glass over the top of the air gap and that helped flush out debris that was stuck in there. Works great now! Thanks for the video and tips!
Thank you so much. I have a whirlpool and this is exactly what was wrong. Such an easy fix for piece of mind. Thank-you thank-you thank-you.
Man I was really skeptical about this and can’t figure out how or why, but it worked. Thanks!
Wow this did it and saved the extra time and effort of disassembling the pump! Thank you 🙏🏼
It worked! Thank you so very much!! Appreciate you taking the time to upload this.
Wow! Dude, thank you! Worked like a charm. I honestly thought I was buying a new motor.
Surprised this worked! 🎉 I have a slightly different washing machine that makes it harder to get a plunger in there. I bought a smaller plunger at the dollar store and it worked right away!! My washing machine would fill then drain but afterwards would make a faint clicking noise for about 2 minutes. Tried the plunger method and was fixed immediately
Your a genius I owe ya a beer!!!!! It worked in no time!
Thanks for the tip. I had tried everything else, even taking apart the wash motor and cleaning it. Cheers. 🍻
Thank you! I watched many fixes for our dishwasher, I stared out with your fix (easiest, plus I already have the plunger, use it for sink not toilet 😂). And hot damn if it didn’t work!!!!!! Thanks again, now I don’t have to pull the stupid thing out and try all the other fixes.👍
I had to try this a few times but it eventually did the trick and got my dishwasher spraying again. Thank you!!
Thanks for the video...I was going to clean the pump till I saw your video...great tip 👍👍
Sean, you just saved me $450. Never would have thought to try that. Thanks dude.
Thank you very much for this recommendation. I was able to fix the dishwasher with this technique.

Yes thank you for this video, It solve my problem
thanks bro you saved my life
Thank you so much it worked!
this is great. I watched all other videos, saw yours and didn't like the idea of plunging. After I tried all videos and was going to call a tech I figured I'd plunge it since my filter was loose like your video mentioned. It brought a lot of gunk up and now it works. The only thing I'm uncertain about is its louder than normal. My dishes haven't been coming out completely clean for a few months, so I'm wondering if it was just slowing staring to die and wasn't pushing water and I got used to it OR I didn't put something back together correctly.
Thank you. That was the problem!
THIS WORKED. THANK YOU!!!
Going to try. Appreciate
I had my doubts because I was 100% certain my circulation pump was clogged up. I waited until after it filled with water and when I knew it should be in the wash cycle. I plunged the hell out of it, closed the door, and the circulation pump came to life and started washing properly. This sure beat pulling out the dishwasher and taking apart the pump!
This worked for me! Thanks man!

Thanks Josh, heads up that it only lasted about a month and a half. I had to do again after that, and now I can't resurrect it period. Hope you have better luck but may want to plan for alternative, new unit or fix. I just ordered a part on ebay for 39 bucks so ordered and will take apart in next week and see how bad the clog is, or if true failure. For 40 bucks, not going to risk not having the replacement on me if needed. After that I figure the next problem this thing gives me, it's time for a new unit. :-) All the best!

For what it is worth, I did find a piece of broken dish in the pump when removed. I took this out and thought Id get lucky and exiting would then work. Wrong. So had to revert to the new (used/ebay) pump. So I did the job twice. This video was super helpful as you don't remove whole unit. Obviously when apart, you just replace the pump, not whole assembly. kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6imrbd_fbefcrA.html
I did the same it worked for a bit then quit so I took the water pump off and it had some gunk inside it I wiped it out clean slapped it back together and it works
thank you so much!
I think this is the issue I'm having as well. It seems to do the initial drain cycle when you first start it then you can hear it filling and feel water flowing through the braided hose but then it just sort of sits there in a state of pause where I think the pump should be running and spraying down the dishes

Hi sr, can u help me please? what part do u sepárate after take off The first filter? Frame filter? O what is that name/number part from Whirlpool please? Mine it is broken/melted
Was it making any noise after it filled? I can tell its trying to do something on mine because its making a noise near the top right in the back.
Never thought to check KZread for help. Called repair person paid th $75 he told me it was motor. Bought a new washer. Wonder if this would helped me? I am going to try this out every six months or so just to keep machine drain clean.

Mine takes on water and pumps it out if I cancel the cycle. Once it fills it makes a slight hum and does nothing.

I have tried some citric acid if you suspect hard water. I run a cycle with half a cup every few weeks and seems to help. YMMV as they say. If you have hard water, it's a good idea to have some around period for such tasks and doesn't smell like vinegar. I also take off the spray arms and "bang gently" from time to time Against an old book or semi soft surface. Something will probably come out (unfortunately not pretty) .
I tried that but that didn't work I still have water in the bottom my dishwasher and it is a whirlpool and it looks just like that one as well what other tips do you have for me?
@seandineen1134

Mine had broken china/plate in it. although I got it working again for a while, I eventually (weeks later) had to replace the pump. Assume like yours, I overworked the pump and reached the point of failure. I replaced it, and now a year+ later I decided to upgrade completely to a KitchenAid.
What would you recommend doing if this doesn’t work?
@seandineen1134

If it has all the same symptoms and does NOT correct, you need to replace the pump proper.
Anyones heating element stop working after this?

So I just tried this. Unit turns on, sounds like it’s about to start then sits there doing nothing. It drains no problem. Water pump issue?
@seandineen1134

"Water pump issue" is the the start. Think you meant replacement? This is vid is clearing a jam in the pump, so if you did this, and it didn't resolve, then that most likely means jam has already burned out the pump motor Matt. As I've said in replies, this only bought me more time - few months. Eventually pump full failed (as yours may have). I did fix pump, but eventually moved on to a new dishwasher.
Bless you for this video, I'm surprised the Government hasn't offed you yet. Just kidding, not. They want your share.
See below for UPDATE! - Wonder If I could make something to use compressed air with a tight seal? Maybe damage something?

I think it is more about jiggling items that are a blocker loose. That seems more of a full drain block solution. worth a shot, but it's only a pump prop and check valve you are working through.

***FIXDED!*** I used a plunger and it worked once. Then I pulled out the wet/dry vac. DONE! I took out the dry filter then installed the wet filter. I took the lower arm off but not the manifold. The manifold has a gasket and also has a tube that fit perfect for my shop vac hose. I sucked it dry first then switched the hose on the vac to blow. Then sucked it again. I did this a couple of times. It's running and washing now! Thank you for the reply. Let me know if this helps anyone! Wife will love me again ;)
