I want to thank you for the repair videos as my dishwashers is doing the same thing. I don’t have a lathe so i will be buying bearings to repair. I can’t believe some SOB would make comments about your kitchen, didn’t they come here to learn how to repair their machine? Please don’t get discouraged with this crap as for most of us are very appreciative of your videos which take much time to create. You could have just fixed your machine and posted nothing!!! My whirlpool dishwasher just crapped the bed. I am a aircraft mechanic and thought how hard can this be? so I troubleshot it down to a bad circulation pump. I was looking for the procedures required to replace it myself( youtube is great). Great video I just ordered the bearings off your link. TNX for the help and doing all the legwork. And for the record my wife was watching the video and commented to me "his kitchen is filthy" then you came out on the next followup video and commented "some dick called my kitchen dirty" CLASSIC karma I call her out :)

I watched this video more than a year ago trying to fix my dishwasher. It is still running great but I went a different route than anyone else that I have seen online. I found stainless steel flange bearings that fit in the o-rings just like the graphite bushings. Part# SMF105-ZZ, 5x10x4mm. The bearings flange isn’t as thick as the original bushings so I cut nylon spacers (1/2”x.194x1 before cutting)to account for the difference.

They need to put you on their board for substantial improvement repairs of appliance and maintenance, cause with yur video they can really see how important it is to make quality inter main parts.

I machined 2 bushings out of a solid bar of oilite bronze material. I purchased a 5 MM reamer which made the bore about a half thousand over the shaft size. The shaft isn't exactly 5 MM but oilite is difficult to machine to tight tolerances but I lucked out and it has been working fine.

We moved into our house about a year-and-a-half ago and the dishwasher has never worked, I did not feel it was a big issue though because I'm used to doing dishes by hand which is how we used to do it in the apartment before we bought our house. Anyways I recently decided to take a look at a dishwasher and this pump seems to be our current issue, after replacing a clogged and horribly gunked up drainage hose that is! Thank you very much for documenting your adventure with this dishwasher because it seems like I am in the same scenario, I don't know how well I will be able to mimic your path and all this but I am an amateur DIYer myself and I love watching other people's adventures and how they get things done! Just thought I would add a data point. I went through the same process as you, except my first fix was bushings made out of a set of brass speaker posts (what happens when you pull stuff apart at 10PM just to take a look and then start ransacking your junk drawers for kludge parts). Like you, I eventually got around to making something out of bronze, but that was because I experienced a second failure. The second go round, I didn't put the kick plate back on right away. Without the soundproofing, I heard the root cause, which was an intermittent failure of the diverter pump. When the diverter got stuck between positions, the back pressure set up a cavitation wobble that eventually toasted the bushings.

Interesting deduction... my diverter motor went bad... then the circulation pump... though I can't say categorically it was "A" that caused "B"... it certainly is feasible!

Same exact problem, less than four year old dishwasher. I’ve already purchased a replacement part but will retain the old part for possible repair. You should consider selling those replacement bushings on eBay as there does seem to be a market. Even with a markup, these would be less expensive and more durable than replacing the entire component.

Same here. There seems to be a lot of this specific failure in a range of these similar models. Very annoying as it's not easy to diagnose and the least accessible component.

Great news guys, I found a temporary fix for the graphite bearings. It thought about just rotating the bearings 180 degrees so the magnet would pull the shaft into a area of the bearing that is not worn. I pulled the bearings out and reinstalled them with the worn spot (has lots of scratches, measures thinner with callipers) away from the stationary magnet. The bearings were a little tough to get out. I used a large screw like the KZread guy. It chipped a little. I had to get the bearing wet to get it to go back in with the rubber o-ring. It worked! I have been running the dishwasher for 2 days now. I am not sure how long it will work but this fix was free.

Thanks for the videos! I ran across you when my 2 year old Whirlpool dishwasher (builder installed) died. I was so tempted to just buy something nicer but the idea of throwing something so new into the trash was eating me up. I ended up just replacing the pump but this video really helped me understand what was probably going on inside and next time if it happens again I'll take it apart and see if I can make a more permanent fix like you did.

I'm very fortunate to have a friend with his own machine shop at his house and a stick of brass. He made me a couple brass bushings per your recommendations. I had ovaled out graphite ones and a scuff on the housing just like you had. Things look much better on the inside now. Reassembled everything and turned it on - water leaked everywhere! I think I didn't do a very good job of reassembly, I'll have to try it out later on another day. Also left the motor gasket at his house, so darn.

It's been a couple months since my repair with brass bushings and this dishwasher is running like crazy. I feel like I just upgraded to the pressure washer mode. A million thanks. I never thought I would be filled with so much joy EVERY TIME I run my dishwasher now!

I found rc car bearing, that are 5x14x5 . I've got them ordered , they are all steel

I glad I watched this second video just in case I have the same problem with the second bushing.btw I have taken my DW apart countless time to clean out the food grinder screen. Yes having animals you would be surprised how much lint, fur and other debris clogs up that screen! BTW : I do have a lathe but that’s needs repairs too 🤦🏼‍♀️

Thanks for the great videos. My pump just failed yesterday; unfortunately, the damage was way worse. I ordered a new pump, but will be installing bearings as a preventative measure. Will check to see if I can find ceramic bearings too

Awesome video. We used your information to take our pump apart as we were experiencing the same issue and we found the impeller completely loose inside. The threads were all worn out probably caused by an incorrectly installed impeller at the factory (not tight enough) - poor quality control, Whirlpool. Since we couldn't purchase the impeller separately (a shame) we had to order a new pump from ebay for $62. Thanks for taking the time to make and post these great videos.

Great video, I watched the first one a year ago after my dishwasher failed. Whirlpool covered the parts. The pump has again failed. I tore one down abs found garbage “bushings” and a scuffed up interior from everything being out of alignment. I got to thinking I need some bronze bearings or something and remembered your video. As other commenters have said I’d happily buy a set of your brass/bronze/etc bushings if you’d consider selling a set. I am not keen to spend $200 on another pump.

The threads in my impeller hub failed on my WDT720PADM1. I fixed it by epoxying a nut with the correct threads into the wallered out hub, but that repair only lasted about a month. Going to revisit with a better adhesive.

Definately a bad bearing. When you gave it a big bump, you bounced the impeller out of is oblique position and momentarily put it parallel to the magnetic field which caused it to spin. I once had my auto indoor fan that had a bad bearing. It would only start if I hit a bump really hard. Similar to your bouncing the dishwasher! Orientation of the impeller to the magnetic field is critical to a few thousandth of an inch. Nice job on using the lathe to make a part. I Iove stuff like that!

I did the same repair but found the bearing rusted so I re-did it with a polyethylene bushing and that has worked out well. I took it apart a year later to remove debris from the pump impeller and my polyethylene bushing had no detectable wear.

Just found your video and it made me think. Same exact issue with the bearing. I did find the motor assembly on amazon for ~$50. After putting in the new pump in, it didn’t work. After countless rechecks on how I put it in, I came to the conclusion the new unit was faulty. So I thought, try taking the bad part off old and replacing with the part from the new. The old pump worked but just got stuck. So I switch out the grey housing of old and new. Old drive mechanism and new pump housing. Guess what is working. Awesome job on the bearings, why wouldn’t they make it the correct way in the first place.

I think most probably that Amazon pump looks the same with frequency and voltage but different rotation timers like originals has 30mins/10min off also amp is different as week 1.2 vs 0.9 .

Thank you for the instruction Sir! I have now repaired mine and it's a whirrin' in the background. Unable to go without a dishwasher waiting for parts I kludged it differently. First, my impeller was heavily scarred and scored especially at the front end bushing and needed strong polishing on a drill press with 2000 grit paper. I purchased a 3/16" id 1/4" od x 3/4" long 'aluminum spacer' at 'the hardware store', cut off 2ea approx. 1/4" long pieces, de burred and tapered one end, drilled out the carbon bushings to 5/16" (removed the egged out portions), lubed with lithium grease, and with the spacers on the impeller shaft pressed them into place. Was too tight initially so more persuasion was applied. Extremely ghetto but now I have time to figure out how to order the 3D printed parts mention elsewhere in the comments.

Love it! I was looking for other answers to a newer KitchenAid circulation motor problem, and found your video. Good work with the lathe. I don’t have a lathe, but filed down a light fixture’s brass pull-chain dangle thing untill it fit my Samsung’s circulation pump (same graphite bearings/bushings). I’m thinking about 3D printing some too, so it’s good to see others are finding solutions too. Ps. The only Whirlpool product we own (OTR microwave) is having door switch issues after less than a year. 8-\

Same Dishwash same problem. 6 Years old. I do not have a lathe but I do dabble in 3D printes so I have a lot of 3D printer parts. I found that 625ZZ stainless steal ball bearings fit the shaft well and will sit in if you drill out with a 5/8ths drill bit. Mine were the sealed version. I know they are not realy sealed from water but they work well for now. If they last 12 months I will just replace them once a year. You can get 10 of these for < $10 US on amazon. If they stop before then I will try your plastic race bearings from McMaster Carr. A plastic race 625ZZ would be perfect.

Thanks for showing us how these little time-sucks are worth it in the end. I got a damned Frigadaire dishwasher that has been good for quite a while, that is not draining fully now. It will drain if I press the START button, but it won't do it fully at the end of a load. So, I'm slowly working my way through problems. Surprising, though, is how clean my interior is. Yeah, little gunk, but the interior has been kept clean. We do press-washing of things, so not really much goo inside. Now, I have to work-through to find the item that is failed. I only wished they designed these to be more than throw-away systems. Whole damned thing is perfect, except for what the problem is. But, I've probably had it 10 years (or so) without much problems. So, I will trust in what you did, and I will know that I can fix whatever comes. If you can, then I guess I can too. I don't have all the nice tools you have, but I can rig-things pretty damned well. Again, thanks for your video.

I sure wish I had found your videos a few weeks ago. I have the exact model WDT790SLYM3. I got it for $50 knowing the pump was bad, because it matched all my other appliances and I have a white plastic tub gold series dishwasher. I ordered the whole bottom end (sump with pump) for $150 figuring $200 for a "new" stainless tub dishwasher wasn't bad. The new bottom end hasn't arrived yet, but I'm thinking I may just swap it all out and keep the old pump to do these upgrades, and have a spare pump (if/when the new one goes). Out of curiousity I DID take the old pump out and the bottom was not ovaled out, but the TOP sure was. I'd be willing to pay you for a pair of brass bushings (I don't have a lathe) if you'd consider. This is VERY useful information you've posted and I may try the bearing route too. OH and yes my motor was full of gunk, but the shaft was not scored or anything. I think when these graphite bushings oval out, the shaft gets "stuck" at an angle (like you said in your first video). OH and what do you think of ceramic versus plastic / stainless bearings? I saw that in a comment and got curious. OH and ju8st so y'all know, that dickhead commenting about your kitchen compelled me to subscribe! :)

I have the same problem -- give a wack with the butt of a screw driver and it sprays. I had replaced the control board because a bench test of the pump worked ok with 120 vac, Never checked the bushing/bearings but I am sure that's it, after replacing a new control panel --still the same problem. I checked AC voltage out of the two purple source wires with it running and the 120 v came on after the tub fill-- should have checked that before I ordered the control Board. After the new CB thats when the wack attack worked. You can get the new replacement circ pump for $50 plus $7 shipping now( not to mention my lathe is a drill held in a vice),so it is no longer worth trying to reinvent the wheel( or in this case the bearing ) now that it has come down IMHO because I'm a lightening wont strike twice kind of guy.. But I appreciate your diligence this is by far one of the best in depth explanation of a common problem KUDOS to you man!-- BTW your kitchen is cleaner than mine.

I noticed you left the rubber seal under the bronze sleeve. When you used the bearing on the first video you left the seal out. If using a bearing on both ends should I use the rubber seals under the bearings? What purpose do they serve because it appears the motor is always full of water? So happy I found your video!

Great job. I am sickened by corporate greed. I have a 1 yr. old dishwasher that the pump stopped working. THAT IS BULLSHIT. I have tried to get a service manual but alas they don't sell those. I really appreciate this video and the first one. I moved into a house and the inspector said the dishwasher was running great. I mean, it did sound like it was running ok, but it hasn't cleaned a single dish in the past few months since I moved in Pretty sure it was just partially filling, sometimes running, but mostly just draining. I thought it was just that the basin wasn't filling with enough water, then I found water was leaking from the diverter. I fixed that, but it turned out the fill valve ALSO needed to be replaced. The basin is now filling, I thought the pump was running before, but it seems like it also has this intermittent issue where sometimes it does, and other times it doesn't because of it getting stuck to the wall due to the bushings being worn out. I love the fix, I tried really hard to find a bearing that would actually fit the exact size of the existing one, took me a while to find one but I did manage to find a 5 x 14 x 5 for about the same price as the bearing you used in the original video with glass balls. I look forward to getting them installed and sharing how it turns out. Glad I didn't buy another motor that would have me going crazy from this same problem occurring again in the future.

Phillip, what a knowledgeable video. My dishwasher whirlpool goldseries is not washing, even though the electronic panel sends out 120v to the recirculating pump the dishwasher doesn't wash. So how do I determine if the control panel Is faulty or if my recirculating pump faulty. The diswasher fills, drains but no wash. I check the wires: OK, I check the drain ok, it's between the control board and the pump. How do I determine. Than, you sir.

The home appliance market, being controlled with the virtual monopoly of Whirlpool, and Haier, who both make crap, should cause many new businesses to pop up: People selling parts from discarded appliances, and people selling BETTER replacement parts. You sir, have our attention. All appliances are driving everyone mad. It's only getting worse. Every problem is an invention (or new business) waiting for the right person to happen. Personally, I hope home 3D printers (and scanners) will eventually help us make most repairs. For metal , or complex parts, someone needs to start an appliance parts business with upgraded parts as you've taught us here. If you only knew how horrible ALL kitchen appliances really are now. . My issue is stopped impeller thread. Not sure what to do. Before taking apart motor and seals, make sure that is it stripped.

This is great but..I'd like to see ya actually connect voltage to this pump while in your hand to see it work..I'd actually luke to know what the exact voltage I need to test my pump, I'd rather do it that way to see it either work good or not at all without an ohm meter or replacing it only to find its something else

Funny, we have the same dishwasher, the same lathe and the same issue. I would have gone to the bronze first.... but I didn't think you had a lathe. Those bearings are water lubricated [ dirty water ] and if the originals are graphite, they shouldn't fail if kept wet. I have a feeling these pumps are not getting enough water into the motor guts and thus fail. About to open one up myself. By the way, I see used ones for $25 on eBay and other sites. Have to find a way to beat the Chinese crap - good job on this motor.

Hi Hi I need your help. If the propeller opens when turned anticlock wise and the propeller fins are pointing towards right around 60° Angle from top. Which way the moter should rotate clockwise or anticlock wise. Any comments or guidance will be of great help as I have forgotten the direction of motor while changing the capacitor of my AC induction motor.

What size drill did you use?

how was the fit on the shaft and how was the fit in the housing? I was looking at a 5x16x5 bearing also. The 605ce is 5x14x5.

@@Tony-it1zt I used heat shrink around bearing to compensate around bearing to make it fit snug.there is a gap that’s extremely small thickness is about soda can aluminum twice that I know due to using that prior to heat shrink but it was unstable due to being so thin. Heat shrink filled it nicely I cut off any excess and tried to make it not stick out at all. I can make a video of how I set mine up around bearing.

Tony here again Why does that motor have to run in the water? What do you think of installing a seal?

These new style motors are meant to run without a shaft seal. That way you don't have to concern yourself with the shaft seal wearing out and leaking.

The water in the pump is the lubricant to some extent and the pump is 100% sealed so it will never leak. They took this design from fish tank filter pumps.

Is that pump electric I mean do a wire hook up to that pump to cause it to work

Yes, there are two wires to complete the circuit.

I cheated by marrying someone 5 years older than me that already had kids, but I'm definitely old enough to have teenagers of my own!

Too bad you just can't buy the bushing and bearing that fit into the plastic sleeves . There must be some company that makes them? There are not many of us that have a metal lathe.

For God's sake! Don't ANY of these appliance manufacturers made decent products anymore? I saw the exact same issue with the discharge pump on our Samsung front load cloths washer. At five years the discharge pump crapped out. It cost me $200 for the repair. The tiny little motor was frozen up. I cut the old one apart to see the inside. It was all rusted up and the tiny rear bearing was rusted causing the motor to seize. I could see right away that the replacement wasn't going to last long either. Two years later the main bearing that the tub rotated on failed and smoke came out of the washer. The repair guy said it would cost as much to replace the bearing as it would to buy a new washer. I asked him what he would recommend as being a good washer. He said "It doesn't matter...they're ALL junk!". So no more Samsung (Korean) junk for us. That was in 2015. We bought a Maytag washer and dryer with a 10 year warranty on the motors. The main Whirlpool company is only 35 miles from me, but, now all of their products are coming from Mexico! That's all junk for certain. 😬 Just don't know what to buy anymore.

It should not be wet on the inside...your shaft seal/bearing or large o-ring gasket are leaking...the material build up on the inside is causing the reoccurring issue.

"...close to twenty thousandths too big..." So it's 0.00005 of a unit too big. Eh??? What is this magic?

He's referring to Imperial measurements. Twenty thousandths of an inch or half a millimeter of slop.

These el cheapo pumps seem like they are designed to fail. They know full well, that those graphite bushings wear out prematurely. Am I expected to believe that American manufacturers can't build a quality pump that lasts? What happened to the "Greatest Generation?"
