I think one of my favorite things about the Rotor Riot guys is that they are honest and don't seem to be spokesman for their sponsors, they just tell it like it is. "These batteries suck." You would never hear that from most people talking about a product they are sponsored by or affiliated with. I'm glad these guys don't just act like all their gear is great without ever saying something negative. If all somebody has to say is good things all the time and can't find anything bad to say, they're either a liar, an idiot, or both and I wouldn't trust them. These guys are doing it right. Cheers to honesty!

My new favorite KZread channel just validated what I was thinking! I wanted an extra pack for my Quanum Cyclops FPV goggles, so I was sitting down to solder up some 18650s. I thought I'd check to see if someone else had headed down this road, and the Rotor Riot guys were the first result...delight! For folks with some gray in their hair (or beard), we did this a million times with NiCD/NiMH packs for electric RC car racing. As long as your soldering technique is good, all is well. Of course, LiPo is scarier because of it's tendency to discharge when overheated, but these cells are INR (lithium manganese nickel), which is quite a bit safer than LiPo for this application.

When you use the multi-meter you should be taking the measurements from the red-white and white-black to see each cell voltage. If you think about it, its just the same as you would measure directly from an individual battery except the its through the balance lead. (The voltage checker doesn't actually subtract from the total 2s voltage) White is your 'neutral/reference', red positive and black negative. (BTW if you ran black-white you'd get a the right measurement but negative since your positive MM lead is on the black negative battery terminal). Hope this helps =]

Just use a 2 Cell 18650 battery holder so there is no need to solder onto the cells. Its a lot safer and it allows you to remove the cells and charge them individually with is safer. Also the 18650 battery holder will add more protection than heat shrink. Those particular Panasonic 18650B are rated at a genuine 3400mAh compared to the fatshark ones in the video that were either 1000mAh or 1700mAh. So these 18650's will double the battery life of the fatsharks newer 1700mAh. Nice video, Keep up the Great work. Happy Flying

I guess it's person preference, but I don't understand why anyone runs the battery in the head strap or why they would even spend all the time to do this. Don't get me wrong, I liked the video and all, but why not just throw a 3000+mAh lipo in your pocket and make an extension lead with an XT60 connector on one end, and a barrel plug on the other end. Then you don't have to worry about bringing extra batteries, it's less weight pulling the goggles down on your face, and you can charge it with just about any charger.

To clear it up for anyone who doesn’t get it. The cell checker measures full voltage, red to black, on the balance lead, then cell one, black to white, then cell two, white to white to red, to get each cells voltage without subtraction. Larger packs just measure along the balance connector in pairs moving along the connector one pin at a time. This is easily seen by probing the balance pins on a parallel charge board. When measuring cell one the white wire will be positive, and it will be negative checking cell two. That is why the DMM measurement didn’t match.

  • @DarrenlinesUk
    @DarrenlinesUk7 жыл бұрын

With regards to the balance port and reading voltages with a multimeter: Red to Black will give the voltage of the entire pack (7.4v) Red to White will give the voltage of the 1st cell (3.7v) White to Black will give the voltage of the 2nd cell (3.7v)

Looks great! The solder wick is a good idea but a larger solder wick needs to be used to handle the amperage in applications related to larger batteries. Make sure to keep the connection tight because; it might cause fraying and eventual failure. To keep down corrosion at the wick use battery terminal paste from an auto parts store.

The batteries are wired in series, so you just check the voltage between the points in the circuit! You can test the individual cell voltages with a multi meter by measuring like this: cell 1: negative - black wire positive - white wire cell 2: negative - white wire positive - red wire (and so on)

And if you are scare of exploding your batteries when soldering stuff right into them, just buy those plastic battery cases that you normally put there things on and solder them together. Its exploding free and will work the same way and you can do it at home! Also you can carry extra batteries in your pocket and change them if needed. And if you are not familiar with C charging rates you can use normal 18650 battery chargers that don't cause you any trouble. Also if you have flashlights, bicycle lights vaping mods or anything else that use the same type of batteries you can use the same type of battery in all these devices. So when you are not flying you can pop out your batteries from your goggles and put them in your bicycle light. I have personally around 14 of those 18650 batteries and try to buy only products that use that type of batteries so I can swap them back and forth when ever needed.

So my background in R/C its very large, from flying tiny whoops to the racing in the GT12 Nationals, also building foam-core planes to 3D 50cc gaser, and even flying AP ships for films and racing 280's in an underground club. In total i have over 20 years in the R/C world, and id say that LiPo's have only been around 10 of those years. Before LiPo's came about, most of the R/C vehicles used NiMh/NiCd battery's, for me i built my own battery packs in this way, But used "Deans Battery Bars to connect them together. For me this project is a walk in the park, so i WILL be trying this at home, and don't worry, if a battery goes "POP", i Know what to do.

Fatshark packs are 1000mah for the small pack and 1800mah for the larger one. The Panasonic 18650s they are using look like the 3400mah ones, so that is 1.88x the battery life vs an 1800mah, and a 3.4x vs the 1000mah packs. The batteries right now are $13 shipped per pair on amazon. Charging: Panasonic (NCR18650B) cells are rated for .5c charging (half that if temperature is below 10c)

Great idea to build such a pack! I've been searching for the batteries and this specific NCR18650B battery doesn't pave a protection circuit buit in. There are versions with a protection circuit available. Would it be smart to use the protected batteries instead of the unprotected? Furthermore, the same batteries are available with solder pads which should be a lot safer than soldering the wires directly onto the battery.

The question Chad raised at 23:24... my theory is that the designers of the face plate fan knew this was going to retro fit other models of their goggles (and as it happens other makes too) , this method makes it easy to be powered, if you had to connect the face-plate to the inside of the goggles to get its power from it would be way more difficult.

Can someone advise? I have FatShark Dominator V3 Headset fitted with the LaForge FPV and diversity module. Nominal volts recommended by fatshark are no good, I have tested on a Lab PSU I have found above pulls 1amp and don’t seem to like going lower than 8v as the sharks start beeping to say the battery is low. If I pump up the volts to 8.5v they seem happy. What is the nominal recommended voltage and max load for running with above FatSharks LaForge FPV and diversity?

Could you have taken the side off the 1800 FS battery case to hold the LED checker thingy and put it on under the shrink on the new batt? Might have made it look more finished... Great mod guys!!

How Do you charge the unit as Fatshark ask to charge 18650 Batteries individually outside the case not the two together as in the fatshark case?

I think you should know, you can get 18650s with solder tags already welded onto the ends, so you don't have to risk them blowing up from trying to solder directly on to them.

i just purchased a fatshark battery, and it came missing the center wire on the balance lead... i opened it up and added it back in but the quality control out of the factory seems pretty bad... will be making my own from n.... i mean i'll have to find a better alternative to them.

@Rotor Riot, Try putting your volt meter on the red and white wire to read the other cells voltage.

Also 18650 cells can be bought with tags at approx the same price, so you don't need to worry about soldering directly to the cells.

If you want to measure the voltages of each cell through the balance connector, you start at the end with the black wire and put your negative multi-meter lead on that connector, and the positive multi-meter lead on the next connector to the right, measure the first cell, then move BOTH multi-meter leads ONE connector to the right to measure the next cell, and so on. So move the positive lead one connector to the right and then move the negative multi-meter to where you last had the positive lead. I know, it sounds counter-intuitive to put the negative where you just had the positive, but you are not reversing voltages, you are ISOLATING each cell. So as long as the battery's main leads are disconnected, no short will occur. That's how the balanced plug voltage meter works, not by subtracting.
