    The reason for the protection circuit is because the barrel connector used is possible to be shorted out on some surfaces. The Protection circuit is to cover FatShark's ass incase the battery goes up in flames when inside your bag. Unfortunately the protection circuit then means you can't balance charge the battery. I did tell them a simple fix would be to put a flush mount switch on the top of the case and therefore not need a protection circuit at all and I hope one day they will do that.

    FinalGlideAus I assume you're talking about that lipo version of the battery. I actually took apart two of those a while back and found no protection circuit. I was rather alarmed by that. does the 18650 case have any sort of protection circuit inside it? I wasn't able to figure out how to take it apart which is why I have a ghetto wire tapped to the outside. by balance charging the 18650 inside the case, the protection circuit shouldn't come into play and shouldn't be tripped if there even is one. I've already charged through at least 5 cycles in the case and it charged perfectly fine. I experimented by charging the cells in 2S format outside the case and it took equally as long so I figured the case isn't doing anything to hinder charging. nice to know that fatshark is at least aware of the convenience issues. it's unfortunate that they just choose to do nothing about it.

    I actually haven't asked if the new 18650 case specifically does have one but I think it does. I'll ask next time I get a chance. I've always hated the protection circuit as well and trying to convince them to adopted a simple switch which will fix all the issues and still cover their ass. Another reason for no balance wire where you put it on was because it's a moving part and the wire would fatigue over time. I'm trying to convince them to think of a solution though. I agree one should be able to charge from the case. It's only sensible in my book.

  • @Kabab

    @Kabab

    FinalGlideAus yes the moving part was what I figure was the real reason why they didn't do it. I imagine if they connected the bottom batt connector to the door hinge and then designed a wire trace to the hinge pin, it should get a solid enough connection to balance charge. for now, I'll keep charging inside the case with my mod. worst case I kill a few cycles on the cells and they last only 4 years instead of 5.

    FinalGlideAus also the lack of an on/off switch on the goggles is one of my biggest annoyances about them. a switch on the battery would solve that entirely and wouldn't require a ridiculous blind plug in of the fan and goggles when they're on your head.

    Great video and mod man, quick off topic question if I may. What kind of camera are you using to film your video's, or are there suggested platforms? I'm just asking because I'm tired of filming ghetto status on a Hero 3+ Black for my channel. Your video looks crisp with good audio, and I'm tired of fixing things in editing such as fisheye and horrible audio the GoPro produces. Thanks in advance brother

    SteelRainSpo I was just discussing this with someone earlier today. they were trying to sell me on a high end Sony camera. i just use my phone and shoot 4k. it's not even a super high end phone. the OnePlus 3. the audio is low on the phone when I'm sitting behind it talking like I am here so I gotta jack it up which is why you hear so much audio clipping. the reason the GoPro doesn't work is because it has a fish eye lens on it. works fine when objects are far but it just looks weird when. things are close up. it also doesn't have the ability to focus so it's fixed at maybe a medium distance focus.

    There is another solution! Banggood sell a case for 18650 batteries, so you buy two of those. One you mod with the balance lead for charging and the other you add a lipo monitor LED and switch for use on the goggles. Costs about $5 altogether. I've tried to incorporate the balance connection all into one case but it gets a bit messy and you really don't want a short on these things. Which is also why I can't understand FS refusal to add an on/off switch.

    I have this case with sorta the same mod done, I opened the case and ran the wire inside so its hidden, but its safe, it will not explode on your head, the fatsharks are drawing a lot less amps than a vape will, it also depends on the batteries that you use, don't use the cheap amazon knock off 18650's, spend a bit of cash and get the Panasonic NCR18650B that he is using in this video, well worth the price and a trusted battery.

    speaking of this case!! I've been having problems with this case just in the last few days. the spring seems to lose contact sometimes and it leads to the fatshark screens being turned off. you should add this to your list of mods, I had to add some foam at the bottom of the spring and now no issues. Anyways, I really, really like your mod! great idea and I will be doing this mod soon. I'm curious what AWG the wire is in the power connector though and if charging at too high of amperage can cause issues?

  • @Kabab

    Lithium ion doesn't like high amp draw or charge. Make sure to never charge past 1C. Preferably like 0.75C. Charges the same way as a Lipo, just slower. I too have actually had that black out issue happen to me too. Didn't know what it was. I don't think it's my battery however. But I'll inspect it. Thanks for the tip.

    Kabab FPV it's the spring in the case losing contact for the very of briefest moments that causes the blackout with the goggles. a lot of others are experiencing the same issue with the 18650 case. I fixed the issue with mine wedging some hard foam between the bottom coils of the spring to create more pressure for the contact with the 18650 cell. I do love using the 18650 high drain cells, tons of cycles as long as the charge rate is low like you said

    Adam-g1 only thing I can think of that's causing that is charging the batteries at to high of an amperage and the springs are collapsing on you. That is if you are charging them in the case. You can always stretch out the springs and that can help or even make some new springs and solder them on.

    some19872003 I haven't charged them in the case, I have magnets and alligator clamps hooked up to wires and an xt60 connector to charge them, looks funny but works well. I've tried stretching the springs but doesn't work too well. Foam between the coils of a spring works great though.

    Received the same FS Li-Ion cell battery case (and have the same NCR18650B Li-Ion cells by the way). I wish to use it in Aomway Commander V1 googles. Had the same idea about adding a third wire for simpler balancing to avoid taking out the Li-Ion cells out. I see that I'm not alone here :) In my case seems I must add a longer cable with jack connector, because in Aomway's distance between battery and googles is more than twice longer. But cables and connectors are still somewhere in way from China to me :/ By the way didn't expected that FS Li-Ion cell case will be so large :) It does fit in back of google head strap anyway and thanks God, aren't heavy. 2x3400 mAh cells should be enough for 6-7 hours - for me it mean possibility of flying without battery swap all day long, which is nice :) Protection circuits for multi-cell LiPo battery set somewhat area used for internal balancing between cells to make charges in all cells equal. Then only 2 wires are needed for charging. Of course, main question about such circuit build quality still remain. At yesterday some Chinese guy decided to ate Li-Ion phone battery. Seems it wasn't so tasty as it look. Surveilance video here - kzread.info/dash/bejne/e6p-s8aul9qqkso.html

Not being able to charge in the box means you only need to buy ONE box and just change the batteries out. It seems like such a minor gripe. First world quad problems. :D P.S. 6 hours nonstop? Wow. I am sure I don't get anywhere near that long before my goggles start beeping at me. I'll delete my previous comment, you figured out how they do cheap balancing. FYI, since you don't want to look Beto with tape I'll let you know a secret. Heat the label up on each end a little (top and bottom) on the side with the instructions. Not the side with the big name FatShark. You will find a Philip screw in the middle on each end under the label. It has plenty of room for you to run the wire inside. Tip: With the battery door open you can reach inside to get the first clip in-clipped then work you way around to pop the other clips. For me I personally don't like running 18650 cells in series without cell protection, I took it apart and discovered FatShark didn't include and thermal runaway cell protection. All the grounds for the barrel plug and the fan plug and negative of the cells run to the same solder points on the battery monitor circuit. Same with the positive wires. So I don't think it has protection, but I need to look up the data sheet for the STI chip to see how they stopped yours from charging. Mine looks like it would charge if I tried it. Well I ended up cutting the springs in half to use my protected cells, or flat top unprotected cells if I decided I wanted to. Now it works with both. Also, does your headset cut out at 7.5V? It has enough room about the positive plate to add a boost like some home made kits have done. I might do that later? But I'm also running two 3200mA cells, so I'll probably have more then enough run time without it and never get down to 7.5V.

  • @Kabab

    @Kabab

    7 жыл бұрын

    Ha no need to delete comments. I also found the screw later too but my case still looks ghetto because I'm lazy. The low voltage cut off on the goggles doesn't bother me at all. I still get a solid 5hrs on them with the two 18650's. That's a whole weekend and then some. That being said, SatFark really could have done a better job on this case. At least added an on/off button like Chad recommended. Since they screwed up the low voltage alarm inside the headset they could have also added a boost too as you said.

  • @GadgetReviewVideos

    @GadgetReviewVideos

    7 жыл бұрын

    Kabab FPV True on both. I'll add that they could have added thermal runaway protection for anytime you out 18650 cells in series. Or at least moved the contact plate back to that space I can add the voltage boot into and allow protected cells. They say on the case it was designed for ICR cells probably because they used to be considered the safest chemistry of 18650. But then Panasonic made a safer and better longer lasting NCR, but they don't mention that they can be used. Even my cells that are non protected cells but have a button top (not flat top for positive) are a very very tight fit. I didn't expected to have to mod this on day one, disappointing. If I knew I was going to mod it I could have built a better one for less, but I was lazy and decided to just buy this case. My mistake I guess. I ended up removing the positive plate spring, cutting it in half and soldering it back on the plate backwards so the smaller round loop wouldn't accidentally short out the positive side of the cell. I just cut the negative spring since it's all negative at the bottom of the cell and no chance of shorting it out. It's a choice on charging I guess, I have a separate charger for 18650 and 14500, 26650, and others that fit. So I'de rather charge them separate and top them off while using my hobby charger for my LiPo packs at the same time. The sad part is I just opened the headset box and it's my second one. It has a hair inside between the right LCD and the lens. The first one had a dead pixel in the middle of the left LCD, the hair is worse. Quality control hasn't impressed me so far with FatShark as a new customer. I'm thinking about instead of a third exchange maybe just opening this one and removing the hair since I have a microscope. I don't think it had any warranty void stickers on it. Still again for the money I expected better quality control.

IMO I would externally charge and keel the batteries married and rotate the way they go in each time so one battery isn't being abused more and the health of the batteries stay the same as much as possible.

    Lipo and Li ion are the same thing, they are exactly the same chemistry inside the only difference is that a lithium polymer battery is in a soft polymer case and the lithium ion is in a hard steel cylindrical case but they are essentially exactly the same battery inside. Lipo batterys are not dangerous if treated with respect, only damage or abuse causes them to have a tantrum. If you don't damage or charge incorrectly they will behave themselves.

    hey kabab, awesome fix. I'll do this, but i'll try to route the wires inside for a factory look. Do you think it can be done? I'm waiting on my case still in the transit..... Is that ugly frame still up for giveaway? I'll KISS that out on 5s. :D Send it to me. Kiss24A, Kiss FC, Zmx Fusion X25 2522kv, HQ 5x4x3 V1s pc props, and a graphene 5s 1300mah (Aomway 600mW VTX, good ol' HS1177 cam, 35V 1000uf Low-ESR cap and a Matek PDB, but these don't really matter anyway) Also i will build it in a pusher (upside down motors) configuration, so it will be extra badass. Have these components already, so i won't need to buy anything. Pushers are RAD af

    I promised the frame to a commenter really early on. I can't even believe how many responses I got to that. Sorry but I have something coming that's much more worthwhile than that ugly upside down thing. As for routing the wire inside, I tried to take the case apart but I couldn't figure out how to open it. I didn't want to break it so I gave up and just ran it outside. If you figure it out, please do share. The case looks like it has room for it inside around where the batt level meter is.

    I have done this mod with the wire ran inside the case, the back warning label is just a sticker, there are 2 small screws under the label, take out the screws then there are 4 plastic clips holding the black back onto the white frame, 2 clips per side, use a small flat head screw driver to pry one white side away from the black top and the whole back plate will pop off. Also I had to melt a small section of the white frame near the hinge section to fit the wire through. Here are some pictures. imgur.com/a/5Nqrb

    This is kind of an unsafe mod considering how bad the design is in the first place, especially with where you put that solder blob.

    this is NOT a fix. it's a mod. I rather have a few 18650 batteries with me than having a wire taped around and plastic shaved off the battery case. besides 18650 charger is not that expensive. sometimes it's not all about balance charging. 18650 is more dangerous than Lipo this is the reason why these cells are contained in a metal tube.

  • @Kabab

    @Kabab

    Chadd Astronomo that's not why they're in a metal tube. the title of the video says 'MOD' if you missed it.

    Kabab FPV i might have missed that. but 18650 cells are in a metal tube. reason for that is one little poke to the cell it will explode.

  • @Kabab

    @Kabab

    Chadd Astronomo not true most of the time. any charge dense lithium tech is suceptable to thermal runaway. lipos are designed to dump amps super fast. lion is designed to spit it out slowly. lion inherently is less flammable than lipo. both are dangerous if used improperly. the fatshark standard battery with the lipos in it will be far more dangerous if punctured and has a higher chance of lighting up. 18650 cells are in a cylinder shape because of how the charge layers are organized. it's the most efficient shape for the package.

    You say it like it's common thing for 18650 to explode. You can short 18650, you can poke it, you can cut it with axe... and 99% of the time nothing much will happen. The battery will get hot, die and that's about it. I am yet to see 18650 explode after extracting and messing with like 80 batteries salvaged from notebook batteries. They can explode, it's just very unlikely. Once I even managed to charge battery to negative voltage (-0.5V, reversed polarity) and again, nothing happened.

    Mikolas 3D Printing I guess you have not experienced these 18650 explode. I'm in the electronic cigarette business for a few years and this is the primary battery we use. I'm not here to convince anyone I'm just putting in my 1 cent.
