The worst things about FatShark goggles

When you are not moving forward, you're moving backward. The way I see it, it is something that is happening to FatShark FPV goggles. With all due respect to HDO video quality, there are some things that I just can not easily accept: why there is no power switch, an absurd place for SD card, DVR feels like an independent entity and other "minorities". Somehow theoretically inferior companies like SkyZone seem to be making goggles that are more "internally unified". Interesting...

The real problem, beyond Fatshark having been trying to suicide itself through laziness for years, is that now the industry has to work together to come up with an open HD standard so we don't end up with an integrated locked up DJI system... Yes you, Fatshark, Orqa, TBS, Holybro, FrSky, ... you're all going to lose otherwise.

  • @mortache

I dont see this as a problem. You can just use DJI system like any other analog system. They even allow you to use betaflight osd, connect analog receiver to see analog feed, etc etc. Why would i need Fatshark's overpriced garbage?

@@mortache You mean DJI now has a enabled support for the STANDARDS that are NTSC/PAL to ease the move from an open world to their closed protocols? And that's exactly my point, you don't need to buy overpriced Fatsharks cause everyone else supports those NTSC/PAL standards. Go buy Skyzone, Aomway, Orqa, Eachine, ... But show me a competitor to DJI that has a compatible receiver... I'm waiting.

@@RR123 this is literally the first product of this type that actually works. Of course there is nothing like that. But is it overpriced? I don't really think so. And with digital, maybe there will be encryptions and proprietary systems that simply wasn't possible with analog. If fatshark could lock others out with proprietary cameras and vtx, they definitely would have. Lets see how long it takes for others to actually make something that works lol

@@mortache I'm glad it got people thinking and that it proved it's possible. But you're not addressing any of my points. I didn't mention the price either, I think it's fair actually, but that's really not the issue I have. I've seen stupid standards wars and lock in in hardware and software for decades. We are here now because Betaflight is free software, like OpenTX, etc. Also, encryption would be nice, but by the Kerckhoffs's principle, it can't be proprietary, it has to be open, that's literally how modern cryptography works. And law wise, on these band, it's not going to be allowed in every country, sadly. Fatshark could try and lock everyone out and die a slow death. The only thing DJI has is a good tech and first mover advantage, but to be them we will need standards, that's literally how we got the internet, Linux, the web, etc.

  • @mortache

@@RR123 i know we need standardization but it won't be as easy with digital as it was with analog. Fatshark cannot lock others out now, but 5-6 years ago they could surely do that and then we would be flying fatshark systems because nobody until recently could match their top end products. Also look at KISS flight controllers and escs. Open source is nice but for things like hd video transmission i doubt how easy it would be for companies to lock others out. Even now, Frsky is doing encryption in their radio protocols to keep Jumper out. And 5.8ghz not being legal in countries doesnt change anything because thats what most fpv systems and a lot of wifi systems use.

With a power switch you can not only turn on the goggles but you can also turn them off, like in midflight... I would remove a switch just for that reason. Well... Paweł, you have hit the head on the nail with that one :) Just one addition to what you said: I am using the head tracker with an RC car and from all the head trackers in the universe I have used the Trinity HT is really the best in class. I really feels like you're in the car when driving it with pan and tilt controlled from the movement of your head! Other things you mentioned are still valid. Even the simplest box goggles have the ability to change band with a press of a button without having to resort to any kind of external hardware. That all being said I was a huge objector to the FatShark brand for many years. I even almost sold my Dominator HD v1 goggles at one point. Then I discovered that the modular nature of them is actually the way to go and so from a few days back when I received my rapidFIRE module I am absolutely loving my good old Doms :) An the HDOs are being planned some time next year unless something better will come out by then, of course :)

I was lucky that the stars were aligned just right when I was shopping for higher quality goggles, I got in on the Fatshark HD2/T2. Screen size is important for me, I am happy with them - but still enjoy box goggles. 1.lack of power switch, doesn't bother me. My quadcopter also doesn't have a power switch ;) 2. Dude, right?!? What's the deal with having to plug in the balance lead and lack of an off for the fan. I guess these are meant to not leave connected to power, but I often forget to unplug my balance lead and I suspect it will lead to issues w/ accidental switching. Regarding the DVR (which is why I am commenting), my T2's has the same DVR as your HDOs. You can set it to automatically come on and start recording on power up. This is what I am doing, then when I crash...err land a click on the button to stop it, then remember to hit the button again for next launch (which I often forget). All the while the usual DVR sounds are heard, so I don't feel compelled to pull back the goggles to see the indicator. Dude, that location of the SD card and the indicator light, oh it does my head in. I have to admit though, the DVR records in good quality and I am just using a cheap Eachine RX module. So yes I would agree that both the DVR and the fan come off as after thoughts that they quickly added in, but never going back to improve on their hack job. I didn't hear this as ranting. I like your no nonsense approach. I've grown weary of reviewers, especially when they all come out with reviews at the same time raving about something. There are a few I still follow, you are one of them now. Thanks for posting, so glad youtube pointed me in your direction.

@@jamich1 I know it's not for everyone but if you are really that much of a die hard fpv fan that you feel you need to have a button instead of just unplugging the goggles. 1. Embrace the hobby and get your hands dirty doing some Mods. Its almost like a right of passage. You wanna fly crossfire with a taranis qx7 because it feels great in yiur hands. Same deal. 2. Unless you're flying all day and let's be honest some of us are. If you don't have the energy to execute a simple task like make sure 100% at all times your being as safe as you can with your gear. Ie not walking away from anything unless it's secured or unplugged or being used in that moment. Then perhaps that person should either do some Mods to their gear or have a hole proof flight management, equipment and battery procedure down pat before they just go running off into the field to be an fpv super star.

But the true question is : why have you bought them if you already know 99% of this issues ? For video quality there are skyzone new goggles with oled displays .Check bardwell video for the explanation of the majority of the issues you are saying about fatshark, they have the leading product , the best support and the best reliability , reliability are the main reason just to say one for avoiding the power button, it’s a point of failure...not saying it’s bad to have competition welcome to any other vendor ...hope in orqa’s ( but you have to pay a lot more ) we’ll see !

Because those were the only goggles that were meeting my other requirement: long enough on the market to be free from early life stage problems and with external RX module. Competition does not have that

Have you ever think about how Fatshark kept the Prices so high for so long time.!!!? To much Greed!!! I remember the time Fatshark was the only googles rc world were interested in, if Fatshark solled their googles a bet cheaper at the time many people could afford it, but because they knew they were the only one, they kept the prices so high that the other companies when started producing googles had to bring prices up!!!? That is the main reason I did not like fatshark. This is a hobby and if you compare our hobby the googles are still THE most expensive part, thank's to Fatshark
