Fatshark Goggle Battery Hack: IMPROVED (9v step up mod)

WARNING: If you do this hack, you CANNOT charge through your main discharge lead anymore. The reason is that the charger will think the battery is at 4.5 volts / cell and will refuse to charge it. You MUST charge ONLY through the balance lead. Here is the charger that I use to do that:
www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/st...
Get the Pololu step-up regulator here:
www.pololu.com/product/2116
---
You might be familiar with the Fatshark Goggle Hack, where you build a 2S pack out of commodity 18650 lithium cells. The result is a pack not much larger than the Fatshark 1800 mAh pack, but with almost 2x the capacity. But there's a catch! The Fatshark goggles themselves will shut down when the battery gets down to about 7 volts, and they start beeping at you around 7.2 volts. Which means you can't actually use a good chunk of the battery's capacity!
In this video, I show you how to install a 9v step-up regulator in your battery pack, so that the output voltage stays at 9v ... well, pretty much forever. And that's a good and a bad thing. Because it means you can draw your batteries all the way down to 3.0 volts per cell and get their FULL capacity, but also it means you can draw your batteries all the way down to 1.5 volts per cell and destroy them, and you'll never know the difference.
If that doesn't scare you off, proceed.

    Joshua, do you know if the regulator shuts down if the circuit is open at the output? Because permanently wiring it to the batteries, could potentially draw a a small amount of current and drain the batteries to an unwanted voltage over an extended period of time

    Might be a good idea to put a cap at the reg input. Apparently these regulators can have voltage spikes when power is applied. Not sure if the goggles can deal with such spikes. Either way it's a cheap and easy thing to add a cap.

    While working on my 18650 pack for the FS HDO I was just thinking: Wouldn't it be smarter to build the voltage step-up into the goggles and include a voltage alarm as well? This would bring the following advantages: - Parts only needed once and not per battery pack - Audible Alarm to prevent over discharge (FS Alarm will not work due to step-up) - Main Battery Pack Cable can still be used for charging

    Hi Joshua, did you checked how much current your buck converter drains without any load connected? I just checked a bigger step up converter I have and measured 0.3 mA (9v), no load. Its not much. About 200 mAh per month. It could damage you battery if you put it discharged in a drawer for a winter season :-/. I would consider some miniswitch if I would build somethink similar. The reason good step-ups are setup slightly high (typically .1v) is to account for wire resistance, so whatever you're feeding sees nominal voltage is slightly higher, even with longer/thinner leads than you should be using.

Before the mod: battery displaying 7.3v. Fatshark and the rapidfire powering up and not beeping After the mod: battery displaying 7.3v. Fatshark and the rapidfire powering up but *rapidfire is beeping* It's the rapidfire that is beeping because where I remove the module, the fatshark are powering up and not beeping. Any idea where would that come from?

I tried to measure the output of the furious fpv smartcase first on the input of the BEC and I haven't been lucky because I made a spark and now even without the BEC, there's no output from coming from the furious fpv smartcase. The issue now is that the smartcase displays 0mah now on its little screen. I guess as a temporary solution, I can just remove the pdb that is refusing to output any amp and use the case as a standalone. argh, I'm so stupid to have touched it. I'm not used to a multimeter

    or grab or make an even more efficient step-down regulator LiPo adapter cable. I use an old 3s 2200mAh turnigy lipo with mine and can use it to fly for multiple days without even having to charge. I notice when I do decide to throw it on my charger it rarely is at under 3.9-4.0v per cell. No lipo strapped to your face, but you do need a free pocket. I usually run the cable under my tx strap, under my shirt so it doesn't get caught on anything and it's pretty comfy and light on the face.

    Joshua Bardwell Ues I understand, the problem is that under a certain voltage, the realacc module starts having some "interference" lines before the beep, so with this mod might solve the problem, I'm thinking to build this batteries with XT60 plugs, than I'll make a little adapter with this step up and a tiny low volt alarm in it but before the step up, so I'll be able to charge via a XT60 connector, will have the 9v and the alarm! Maybe this way I'll have good vídeo using all mha of my battery! how many mha/h does the google with a realacc module consumes? does this step up handle it? thanks

    I've been tempted to install a boost reg on the fan input only. I've read where folks said 3s kills the fan, but wondering if older fans were 5v? The fan on my HDO's says 12v and is rated ~2cfm. I tried ordering some 2.5cfm off of amazon and they pushed far less than the original. Probably just a bad brand. But I figure if I fed it a full 12v that it's rated for, it might actually do some good.

    Following up. I did this. It rocks. Today's humidity isn't astronomical, but at 67% ~6pm, it's fairly normal. My Fatshark HDO's did not fog up today. I put the 12v pololu inline with the one-connection fan mod. It's tucked inside the goggle right beside the bullet connector. If you don't like noisy fans, this isn't for you. If you don't like foggy goggles and live in the south,....

    Why not just use a 3s LiPo? I have the Eachine One goggles which turned out to be a flop with the included battery. They would black out with no warning at 50yds or less when using a 200mw VTx. I hacked together the barrel plug to one of my "beginner" LiPos and it fixed the prob. I'm sure most of us have an extra 3s or two laying around. Also, why not pair it with a cheapo voltage beeper on the balance cable?

    quiljw01 Just type DW01 in search of your favorite Chinese supply site (I use aliexpress) and you will find lot of solutions in different form factor and pick one which most suitable for you (they all work same). DW01 based are cheapest solution for protection (they are for 1S so you will need 2 of them but they are so cheap that is not problem), or you can look for battery protection and you will find more solutions but price varies. DW01 disconnect cell on 3V (I prefer that it will cut on 2.7V, like some solutions from linear but that ICs cost 50 times more then DW01).

It's only perhaps 45 ms of latency, compared to perhaps 20 ms of latency for an 1177. The only 16:9 camera I've flown is the Eagle, and it has some issues with lens flare and washed out image, which I think are due to the 16:9 lens, since the 4:3 version looks very good.

    Which Fatshark Goggles do you have, because my Dom V3's happily operate below 7v and will drain unprotected batteries down to below 3v a cell as I found out the hard way! (video proof on my channel) The only reason I can see to add this mod would be so that you don't have an hour and a half of them beeping at you, but then you have to use a slooow balance lead charger - so I would argue that adding a step up regulator is an improvement.

    I'm in the process of building my first pack with the Panasonic 18650's and can't decide if I should do this mod or just build regularly. I don't like the fact that you can't charge it on a regular charger. What's everyone thoughts on which way to go?

  • @JoshuaBardwell

    @JoshuaBardwell

    I've since gotten a little disenchanted with this mod, to be honest. The kicker is not getting a warning when the pack is about to die. Also, I killed a pack by over-discharging it using this mod. So my current approach is to buy protected cells (to prevent over-discharge) and just build an extra pack or two if I want more flight time.

  • @motmot2377

    Thanks Joshua!! So are people not building these packs anymore? I bought two sets of the Panasonic batteries and all the supplies to build. Plus a few of the Polulo regulators because of this video. What are the protected packs you are talking about?

  • @JoshuaBardwell

    @JoshuaBardwell

    7 жыл бұрын

    I still am building my own 18650 packs, just not with the 9v step-up mod. Protected 18650 cells have a circuit on top of the actual cell that prevents over-charge, over-discharge, and over-current. If you were to plug a light bulb into the cell, the cell would shut down at 2.5 volts and not kill itself. If you were to short the cell, it wouldn't blow up. Protected cells are "button top" I believe, while non-protected cells are "flat top". Or maybe I have that backwards. Just search for "18650 Protected" and you'll get the right thing. Non-protected cells are commonly used for high-discharge applications like tobacco vaporizers. For low-discharge applications like FatShark goggles, protected cells are best.

    ok, I'll look into it. I guess I'm just disappointed because I bought a few of the 9v regulators and batteries to build these packs. I started to solder the 18650's last night, so I can't return them. If I solder the packs up along with the led battery checker from my fatshark lipo( just like the Rotor Riot video), will the goggles beep way before the battery is too low? Or can I just keep an eye on it with the led checker? I'd like to be able to at least use the 18650 packs that I have now if possible. Thanks!!

  • @kennethholland1502

    A lot of messing around. My concern is while the battery is disconnected the 9v booster is still running, albeit minimal current draw. It will eventually take the batteries down to 2.5v where it shuts down as per the literature.
