McMaster University is located in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Professor Giroux has a New York or Boston accent. He seems to be an American living in Canada. He says he won’t go back to 5he United States until there is free health care. He will therefore never go back! Recently, my wife needed medical attention and tests. We went to a local hospital in Montreal where we waited 8 hours for her to pass an CT scan and an MRI, all free of charge. In the following days, we had meetings with great doctors who explained the results of the tests. We were never big consumers of health care but when we walked out of the hospital, I was glad to be a Canadian citizen benefiting from free health care.

I just recently come across Henry Giroux and his online lectures/discussions maybe two weeks ago and I’m glad I did… I find him to be one of the more entertaining (in terms of holding my attention) public intellectuals and overall interesting individuals Ive come across in some time now. His handle on the fundamental issues & challenges facing modern society, combined with his ability to clearly articulate them in plain speak, is really quite impressive. We could use a lot more minds like his getting air time across all our media platforms. Great interview David

I think we're witnessing just how fascism and the Nazis insidiously worked to undermine the Weimar Republic. Americans need to wake up and understand that there are incredibly wealthy "entities" (individuals, corporations, industries), in this country that see democracy as an impediment and or existential threat to their fortunes as well as their futures. We saw this once before in 1933-34 during the "Wall Street Putsch" when some of America's wealthiest tycoons, magnates and captains of industry formed the American Liberty League to oppose FDR's New Deal. These same entities also secretly conspired to overthrow FDR and install a fascist stooge (sound familiar?). They failed at that time only because they couldn't convince the US military to join the coup but they didn't go away and they haven't given up. By the early 1930's these tycoons, magnates and captains of industry had become enamored with Mussolini and Hitler's success at pulling their respective economies out of the massive depressions each country was enduring. Many American companies actually sent emissaries to Germany and Italy to study this new thing called "Fascism". This was several years before fascism showed it's ugly side and so what these emissaries reported back convinced many powerful Americans that fascism is what America needed to get out of our own depression. This was what the American Liberty League was really after before disbanding in 1940 (by 1940 fascism had showed it's true evil intentions and there was little chance the American Liberty League was going to win over Americans with fascism). But they never really disappeared and never gave up their fascist agenda. I believe they merely regrouped and found a clever new way to raise the army they needed. They saw how Hitler's and Mussolini's powerful oratory was similar to the mesmerizing effect that evangelicals wielded from their pulpits. I think they realized they could use these evangelicals and their huge and growing congregations. They would now enlist the power of Jesus. This is why I don't believe it's a coincidence that the Fellowship Foundation was founded in 1935. The Republican party's movement further and further to the right is designed not so much to represent its constituents as it is to enlist an army to finish what was started in 1933.

I really appreciated the clear systemic/institutional analysis. Our system has failed profoundly to appreciate/account for how important an educated citizenry and developed social state are to a democracy. These fundamental pillars have severely eroded, like a weakened immune system that can't fight off a disease. Many of us see the symptoms (e.g. fascist tendencies), but are too confused/indoctrinated to seek actual solutions to the disease (e.g. a dysfunctional educational system and the so-called "individualization of problems").

I graduated high school in 1966. From the beginning my education included Civics, the study of our Government and the principals that we are all in this together and everyone needs to cooperate to get things done. I had no idea how we have deteriorated to the "ME FIRST" today but that explains what is going on in Society. I am ashamed of how even "educated" people act today. I'm really sad to learn this and I hope it's not too late, but we have lost so much in the years since I left school. I'm not sure we can even recover that in the next generation. I hoped to leave this place better than I found it, but I'm increasingly afraid it won't be happening.

Both Libertarians and Republicans talk the talk of the absolute sovereignty of the individual over the social responsibilities to the tribe of a democratic nation until the bottom falls out from under them. They don’t turn down unemployment benefits if they lose their job, they don’t think they should have to sell their assets to pay their medical bills, and they should be first in line for financial assistance if a natural disaster wipes them out. It’s all social Darwinism until they are the ones being culled from the herd, and that’s when it’s time to find a scapegoat.

I had a number of excellent teachers in my Public School experience in the 60's and 70's, but one who stands out was a Social Studies teacher who often set up our class to discuss and debate current issues, not from our own view but from the perspective of randomly assigned alternate views. For example, when one of the big issues of the day was whether "Red" China should be admitted to membership in the U. N. we were assigned to debate the matter from the perspective of current U. N. members so we had to research how that particular Ambassador would argue the matter. I drew the "Soviet Ambassador" card while others in the class had to argue from the French, English, U. S. position, etc. We did similar exercises on racial matters, marijuana legalization, women's rights, and so on. Guess what? We all learned more than we would have ever learned about current issues than we would have learned if a teacher just stood in front of the class told us what to think. Many years later, when I was managing a business with about 1400 Unionized employees, we were having a difficult time working some things out so I remembered my High School days and did something similar in a Joint Labor-Management exercise. Union Stewards and Officers met with my management and supervisory staff and I told everyone to "take their Union or Management hats off" and then proposed a number of "grievance issues" that I made up and then told the people at the meeting to argue the matter, not from their own position, but from the position of the other party. It was an eye opener for all involved and resulted in a much better and more productive work environment. Like Atticus Finch said to Scout, "You cannot know another person until you walk around in his shoes." Well, you can't really know your own beliefs until you truly understand the beliefs of others. Critical thinking skills are "dangerous" to those who do not truly understand the how and why of their own belief systems. I choose to live a "dangerous" life in that regard.

Oh yes Henry Giroux, most excellent guest. David's stock hits the roof. He is a famed scholar of Critical Pedagogy. Critical pedagogy is a thought process which attempts to help one's ability to question and challenge domination, and the beliefs and practices that dominate. In other words, it is a theory and practice of helping people achieve critical consciousness. As an example, someone who follows this way of critical thinking about the United States culture may develop a view that most people in Western society are sleepwalking through a banal existence of consumption, obedience, and propaganda, and that they need to be awakened. "When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school, it's a wonder I can think at all". Paul Simon, Kodachrome.
