Seriously though, I hope somebody helped you catch that early on so you could start watching the correct episode order.

    What's pretty cool about John is he isn't the action hero in this series, he's the scientist, the brains. Aren is the actual action hero both because of her military training and her approach to most situations. The fascinating thing will be how their qualities rub off on each other during the course of the series (as well as some amazing chemistry and sexual tension, the stuff of television legend here)

    After all this time, I still think puppetry is a better choice for non-humanoid aliens than CGI. I’d love to see another series use it this effectively.

  • @dargron7614

    @dargron7614

    28 күн бұрын

    CGI has its limitations, particularly for TV. Visually it has gotten pretty good, but you still have issues with CGI believably inhabiting a space - light, weight and movement will often seem off and of course you have the issue of the actors having to imagine what is there. Puppets have the advantage of being physically in the space where they can directly interact with live actors and the environment around them, along with the ability to improvise and experiment in the moment just like an actor. This show makes plentiful use of both tools where appropriate, for example the moment in this episode where Rigel walks over to meet the bugs is CGI, because puppets have their limitations too. CGI and puppetry working together will usually offer the best of both worlds (Jurassic Park being the standout example).

  • @BoboftheOldeWays

    @BoboftheOldeWays

    28 күн бұрын

    @@dargron7614 Agreed. Both tools have their place. I’d hate to choreograph a fight between puppets and actors, for instance. In that situation, mocap & CGI for the alien would be the better choice

    I agree with you. There is much to be said for a physical object the actors can react to, that the lighting and even breezes interact with and the overall lighting matches the scenes. If they aren't careful with the CGI the character movements don't seem natural, like they drop a few frames, or you can have humans jump without the weight and gravity so they are almost like a tick jumping about. . .

    puppetry and animatronics are superior if you ask me. Compare the first Jurassic park to the more recent ones. Those CGI dinos have nothing on that animatronic T-Rex and those animatronic velociraptors.

  • @BoboftheOldeWays

    @@Krista2882 The original JP used a combination of puppetry, animatronics, and CGI. The full body shot of the T. rex roaring was full CGI. And it still looks amazing. As others on this thread have pointed out, each of the tools have their uses. Over-reliance on any of them can hurt the artistic quality of a show or movie.

    The puppeteered characters also benefit heavily from being in the Henson environment, where they are never treated as less-thans in storytelling. From writing to performance, they are given as much attention as flesh and blood characters. One aspect of puppet work is, in many ways, the characters must have an inner dialogue which the puppeteers work with and express through gesture, since facial expression is limited. The work they do with gesture and (either themselves or VO actors) voice must be impeccable for the character to come to life. It is truly a remarkable art form.

    Virginia Hey is the actress. This, Mad Max: The Road Warrior and the Living Daylights are probably her biggest and most well known roles. In an interview, she revealed that she had to completely shave her head for the role. She hadn't realized this at first; her agent failed to tell her. Brian Henson was willing to find an alternate way to do the make-up to let her keep her hair but the takes with a "alien helmet" she thought looked terrible and so she did the work herself. The interesting thing is that Zahn is SO different from Virginia herself, and she loved the role, being a spiritual mother for the ship and it's crew. Unfortunately, the blue make-up also proved to be a problem, as she found herself constantly getting ill. As the series goes on you'll notice they have her wear more clothing so they can use less blue make-up, mostly on her hands and face. There's more to that but it ventures into spoiler territory.

    I recall seeing Virginia Hey on a documentary on human behavior. She was in a sequence where she was on a city street, and due to her beauty she received several looks from passers by. While most of it was positive, she also received some looks which appeared to be negative. It appeared as people were holding contempt for her because of her looks. I found it interesting because the same physical attributes can make one approachable or non-approachable based on perceptions

Claudia's portrayal of Vala might be the most delightful of her career. While I love Aeryn Sun, Vala is pure joy. Don't miss the peacekeepers wars at the end of the series. If the start of the series seems frantic it only gets more. Own the blu-ray and have rewatched it many times.

    Good lord, I hate the Peacock hosed up the episode order. This was a super interesting episode though. I found it super inventive the idea that the Drak species could nab DNA from other nearby species to create protector drones that wouldn't put the colony members themselves in jeopardy. The element with Aeryn's Sabacean physiology, highlighting the difference between them and humans, was always an interesting wrinkle as well. Looking forward to continuing this (somewhat disjointed) journey!

    I saw somebody else in the comments shouted out the "right" order and it seems to fix itself by episode 7, PK Tech Girl, so... at least it won't last too long. (And as disjointed as it is, as unhelpful this early, the show itself was a bit disjointed until later in season 1, IMO - in that they didn't really introduce the main conflict until later - so... at least it fixes itself relatively soon?)

We'll see more of it later. As the series progresses, we'll see the full extent of Pilot's area- it's my favorite set. This was a great episode because they turned the old "The Thing" idea on it's head and found a nonviolent solution to everything. Rigel steppes up! His regalness was on full display. Some seeds of bromance between John and D'Argo when they were messing with Rigel. Neat that Peacekeepers are cold blooded. I imagine they avoid very hot planets. Zan is wonderful and complex. A sorta Zen monk with sage advice. Love her.

That, of course, was BS. Of course Australian's like science fiction. The annoying thing is that Channel 9 had the rights to transmit Star Trek and they kept putting it on late 'cos it was aired just after their horrendous favourite "The Footy Show" which often went over time. Incidentally, the host of the Footy Show, Sam Newman, was "accidentally" run over by his ex-wife. Personally, I suspect she was a Star Trek fan
