Spaceballs (1987)
Spaceballs is a 1987 American space opera parody film co-written, produced and directed by Mel Brooks. It is primarily a parody of the original Star Wars trilogy, but also parodies other sci-fi films and popular franchises including Star Trek, Alien, The Wizard of Oz, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, and Transformers. The film stars Bill Pullman, John Candy, and Rick Moranis, with the supporting cast including Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, George Wyner, Lorene Yarnell, and the voice of Joan Rivers. In addition to Brooks playing a dual role, the film also features Brooks regulars Dom DeLuise and Rudy De Luca in cameo appearances.

Coby, the voice for Pizza the Hutt was Dom DeLuise and yes, Dot's voice is Joan Rivers. The actor in the suit for Dot is the mime Lorene Yarnell from Shields and Yarnell. One of George Lucas' stipulations for permission to parody his franchise was that the Han Solo character couldn't be costumed like he is in Star Wars hence the idea to make him look instead like Indiana Jones. And if you didn't ever figure it out, Mel Brooks played 2 roles in this film...he is President Skroob and Yogurt. Also, Michael Winslow from Police Academy is the radar officer that got jammed doing all those crazy sound effects he is known for. Lucas loved the script so much that he offered the services of ILM to do the visual effects which is why they are top notch for 1987. Some of the escape pod footage is actually unused film from A New Hope. After our heroes get rescued by the "jawas' thru walking up to the scary stage of Yogurt is a veiled reference to the Wizard of Oz. I'm sure you can get which Spaceballs character translates to which character in Oz. One other thing: the doll playing scene was a last minute suggestion by Mel to Rick that he totally improvised on the spot.

Great reaction Coby like always i love Mel brooks movies. A fun fact...when Rick Moranis says 'why don't we take a five minute break', it's exactly 5 minutes in the film before we see the spaceballs again. In case you didn't realize, or know, the late Sir John Hurt was the guy who had the alien come out of him. He was the original actor from Alien as well. Some great little bit's a pieces about this film which makes it funnier when you know. By the way, the guy making the sounds is the legendary Michael Winslow. You can see more of him in Police Academy. Mel Brooks had to get permission from George Lucas who only agreed on the grounds that they sold no merchandise and that Lone Starr couldn't dress as Han Solo. So brooks filled the movie with fake merch and dressed Lone Starr like Indiana Jones instead. There's polystyrene cups everywhere cause cast and crew kept leaving them all over the set, so Brooks just wrote them into the film. And one of my favorite joke of the movie is the stunt double one. There are a lot of 4th wall breaking jokes in the movie (the spaceball cassette, the cameraman getting slashed by Darth Helmet, Yoghurt doing merchandising stuff because "it's where real money from the movie is made" but the stunt double one really made me lose it completely as it was completely unexpected. It was so well done! Keep up the good work. I suggest reaction to more Mel Brooks movies all of the are hilarious.

What I really love about this movie: it not only makes fun of the originals, but is also a loving homage to Star Wars. The incredible attention to detail in the film sets, costumes and equipment alone, as well as the many allusions to the content, requires that the audience knows the original very well in order for the gags to work. At the same time, the movie takes the nonsense to the absolute extreme.

John Hurt also played Kane who was the victim of the Chestburster in Alien, which is the clear spoof near the end. On a side note, the song that the alien sing is Ragtime Gal sung by Michigan J Frog from the Chuck Jones directed Merrie Melodies cartoon One Froggy Evening. In fact, the whole sound clip comes from that short apart from the ending which was tweaked for the movie.

Watch EVERYTHING he ever did, the man is the GREATEST! 🥰 We're not worthy! 🤣 'Pizza' was Dom DeLuise, one of Mel's favorites. 'President Skroob' and 'Yogurt' were both Mel Brooks. Dark Helmet playing with his dolls was total improvisation by Rick Moranis, Brooks just turned him loose and decided to leave it in. 😛🤣

Mel....what a national treasure! Going back to his earliest movies, all brilliant! It's hard to believe, he was a WW2 hero! All his movies are pure genius, the producers is a riot! He cowrote blazing saddles with Richard Pryor and how he got Gene Hackman to take a bit part in, Young Frankenstein, I'll never know! Mel is Yogurt, in this, he's usually in all his movies somewhere! This movie has so many movies in it, even a bit of Dune! He was also hillarious in he had a reoccurring bit part as a guy I think named, Methuselah, in the TV show, Mad About You!

Mel Brooks not only played President Skroob (Which is technically Brooks spelled backwards), he was also Yogurt, he was on his knees when he played that part. The part close to the end where the little alien sang Hello My Baby, it was a reference to a classic Bugs Bunny cartoon called One Froggy Evening. You should see it if you want to understand that joke. The coloring book that Yogurt showed was actually a Transformers coloring book.
