SPACEBALLS (1987) Movie Reaction! | First Time Watch! | Mel Brooks | Bill Pullman | John Candy
Ойын-сауық
May the Schwartz be with you! Steph and Achara watch the Mel Brooks (The Producers, Robin Hood Men in Tights) Star Wars spoof Spaceballs for the first time! Starring Bill Pullman (Independence Day, The Equalizer), John Candy (Planes, Trains & Automobiles, The Blues Brothers, Uncle Buck), Rick Moranis (Ghostbusters, Honey I Shrunk The Kids) and Joan Rivers (Iron Man 3). We didn't realize that there would be so many references, like to Alien, Star Trek and Planet of the Apes.

Actually, ILM only did the chest burster alien. The VFX were done by Apogee. A company started by John Dykstra, who was the VFX Sup. on the original Star Wars. However, George Lucas' company did the Sound Effects and Sound Mixing. The group used to be called Sprockets, before they moved and renamed it Skywalker Sound. This was Gary Rydstrom and Randy Thom's first job as Sound Designers.

I've seen this movie 200 times and I've literally NEVER noticed his eyes are open for the wedding kiss. And now I will never unsee it. Oh, no.
The gag near the beginning with the President was that he was on Planet Spaceball and he needed to get to the ship "Spaceball One" so he seems all the way there. But then he just walked and it was right there.
Fun fact: the space ball with the pick is Tim Russ who is famous for appearing in another sci-fi franchise as Tuvok in Star Trek Voyager as well as the principal in Icarly.
The actress who plays Princess Vespa is Daphne Zuniga. She also stars in the sequel to 1986 horror movie, The Fly. In "The Fly II" (1989), she co-stars with actor Eric Stoltz (of "Mask", and "Pulp Fiction").
Love Rick Moranis! Do consider checking out 'Honey, I Shrunk the Kids' (1989) and its sequel 'Honey, I Blew Up the Kid' (1992). They'd make for really fun reactions. 🧡

You may find it hard to believe but Mel Brooks had one of the most dangerous jobs of any soldier in WW2. He was a combat engineer given the task of removing land mines placed by the Nazis. This had a great influence on his future career, which was to make people laugh. He saw so much hatred in the world (Nazi camps) that he felt that the best way to fight hatred was with laughter. I just wish Mel had been right. Seems like hatred for others is still around.

19:46 - This "soul brother" spaceball minion is actor Tim Russ who played one of the best Vulcan characters in the Star Trek universe, 'Lt. Tuvok'. The show was "Star Trek: Voyager" (1995 - 2001). Don't know if you guys also react to vintage shows or not, but if you do, that would be a great one to watch. Voyager was one of the best of the many Star Trek series. It also introduced the first female captain lead, "Captain Kathryn Janeway" played by actress Kate Mulgrew (of "Orange is the New Black").
33:10 I'm glad I'm not the only one who found those noises very funny 😂
Thanks for reacting to this movie, friends! It's hopelessly silly and obvious most of this time, but it's one of my favourites from my childhood. Your confusion over the "Pluto" joke is understandable if you don't remember the classic Disney characters. Pluto is also the name of Mickey Mouse's dog. That's why the punchline is, "From the bark." Also re: merchadising. One of Lucas' conditions for allowing this parody to be made, and for granting the use of the ILM studio, was that Brooks couldn't sell any merchandise based on "Spaceballs" -- he didn't want any confusion between "Spaceballs" and "Star Wars" toys. So to poke a bit of extra fun at Lucas, the movie was filled with fake merchandise instead.
From what I understand, Lucas gave his blessing, so long as there was no merchandising for the movie. Which is why there's that bit about merchandising when they meet Yogurt. That was a little jab at Lucas.

I especially love that Mel Brooks got John Hurt from the original 1979 Alien movie to do the alien scene in the diner.

Drinking game: Take a drink every time they show SpaceBalls-the product.
The original Star Wars showed everyone why merchandising was so profitable. The reason George Lucas is so rich largely because he negotiated a percentage of Star Wars merchandising profits for himself from the very first movie. Nobody thought it would be that much, but he made a fortune. So by the time Spaceballs was written, movie merchandising was pretty well established.
@toddjones1480
5 күн бұрын
Lucas didn't negotiate for what percentage he would get. He just asked for the rights, period. The negotiations over percentages happened later, with the licensees. And decades later he would pioneer new depths of screwing movie theater owners on their percentage of ticket sales.
People often forget because it doesn't immediately come to mind but when we make a list of brilliant parody movies, we forget to add the SHREK franchise. Shrek is fairytale parody but it still counts for a parody.
The actor combing the desert with the pick who says "We ain't found $hit" is Tim Russ who would go on to play Lt. Tuvok on "Star Trek Voyager".

When they show the shot of the diner parking lot, you can see the Millennium Falcon parked there.
18:37 Okay, there's actually some fun background here. George Lukas *loved* the script as he was given a copy before the movie was finished so he could okay it. The merchandising company for Star Wars on the other hand, played hardball. Space Balls was not allowed to sell *any merchandise* for like 20 years or something like that. Which is why they had the merchandise scene and...well the company that handled merchandise for Star Wars was The *Schwarz* company.
I don't know the full bts just snippets, but I believe one of the first jokes Mel Brooks thought of was the headphone gag. And when he contacted George Lucas, George had two main request that Mel decided to parody in response to. Mel Brooks was not allowed to make or advertise any sort of products for the movie, so Mel decided to make an advertise products for the movie only within the movie. The main character Lone Star was not allowed to be dressed like Han Solo. So Lone Star is dressed like Indiana Jones, a different Harrison Ford character. The scene where Dark Helmet role plays with the dolls was entirely improv'd by Rick Moranis
to understand Prince Valium, you need to know that back in the 80's and 90's we had this pill called Valium that people took to help put them to sleep, so the joke is "he's a pill" (as Dot Matrix calls him) and he's always sleepy.
Some years back Mel Brooks said in an interview that he wanted to actually do "Spaceballs 2: the search for more money". He even said he still had Dark Helmets helmet, he was just waiting on Rick Moranis to UN-retire from acting. Unfortunately that movie is unlikely, too much time has passed. Two of the stars of the original are dead, & at least one, Rick Moranis is retired from acting, & he has shown no inkling of wanting to come back.

In Beetlejuice (the movie) Lydia says her mom’s “sleeping with Prince Valium”. It only came out a year after this film, but I wonder if that was a reference or just a coincidence. 🤔
The money people at the set did not want to pay Lucas a decent salary for Star Wars. They thought it was going to be a B- movie, at best. They gave Lucas the merchandising rights as they saw no monetization of the franchise. Lucas quickly became one of the wealthiest, in hollywood due to producers not wanting to fairly pay him. Brooks played off of that in this movie.
I listened to the directors commentary on this once, and Mel Brooks said (of the opening scene with the ship), "If I had my way, this scene woulda been 45 minutes long."
Spaceballs was great and funny as hell, we need more movies like this.
Missed opportunity: "That asshole shot my hair" "How'd she know my name?"
36:33 "Oh, it makes sense: Valium's always sleepy." They also called him a "pill" at the very beginning. 🤦♂😝
Why is it that after having seen this movie a hundred times I still laugh more than these two? Really, I laugh so much at every silly joke. And here the reaction is mostly: that's so silly. Methinks I really do come from another time.
Pluto is both the name of a planet and Mickey Mouse's faithful pet dog. So because of the *bark* (which is both the outer covering of a tree and the noise a dog makes) he jokes they know they were on Pluto.
I am writing this to help out these ladies and this video and this channel with the algorithm 🥰
5:25 I remember Carrie Fisher actually called her Princess Leia hairdo "the hairy earphones" in an interview.
Another funny old school, satire Sci-Fi movie is "Ice Pirates" (1984), starring Robert Urich, Anjelica Huston, and Ron Perlman.
With a parody like this they are targeting the genre of sci-fi sure Star Wars is the main target, but really the whole genre like Blazing Saddles targeted the Western genre. Doesn't seem weird to have a Brooklyn accent in space as opposed to the British accent will bet in Star Wars.
"You went OVER my helmet?!"❤😂
I watched this movie years before I ever watched a Star Wars movie, and it was still hilarious.

Great reaction! One of the best, if not the best parody movie. My fav Mel Brooks and Rick Moranas movie. This was also the 1st movie I saw Bill Pulman in.
Steph is like one of Jerry Seinfeld’s GF’s on his show where she would say,’that’s so funny’ with a straight face. Steph says,’that’s hilarious’ with a straight face.
When Dark Helmet says, "Only one man would dare give me 'the raspberry' " the term giving someone the raspberry refers to sticking your tongue out and blowing through it. This antiquated term died out in the 70s-80s.
Now they need to watch history of the wotld part 1
The singing alien at the end of the movie is a reference to a Buggs Bunny skit called the singing frog. Tesla adopted ludicrous speed from this movie.
9:01 ya gotta see police academy.
the GREATEST line ever !! ... that's all we needed - a Druish princess !! ... that's funny - she doesn't look Druish !!

This was a fun watch. A lot of reason you don’t see a lot of parody films recently is more that many movie franchises will self-parody. Comedy is interested in nearly all of them. Deadpool movies are often a parody of super hero movies. You also have satire. You don’t see many comedy satires, but we do have dark satire. Such as The Boys is a dark satire of the popular super hero genre. Jordan Peele does horror cultural-satire.
One of the best parodies or satires is Galaxy Quest.
18:13 "Wizard of Oz meets Yoda?" Well, they _do_ have the Scarecrow (Lonestar), Dorothy (Princess), the Tin Man (er, woman), and the Cowardly Lion (Man-Dog)!
"So now you see that evil will always triumph. [Because] good is dumb".
George Lucas gave Mel Brooks permission to make the film on the condition that no merchandise based upon movie could be sold. As such, Brooks filled the film with Spaceballs merchandise in a cheeky nod to the deal.
16:47 To this day, I will still say "Nice dissolve!" if a movie or tv show has a nice dissolve. Especially if it's a dissolve involving the sun. True story! lol
Great reaction beauty's this is a great and funny movie and a classic as well and god bless John candy rest in peace movies these days some movies are still good, great or bad, worst but I miss movies like this I hope some day it'll be back we can only hope
If you want the rivalry between Star Wars and Star Trek you gotta see Fanboys. It's about the time waiting for Episode 1 to come out. Very good comedy and touching as well.
I think one of the old concept drawings of Yoda did look a bit like Yogurt. o.o Also, Mel was getting nasty allergic rashes from the gold make up, but he toughed it out.
0:33 Solid Burn! and valid! 37:14 that right there is John Hurt, and the reason he says "Not again" is that he is the very same actor who got his chest burtsed in the original Alien movie!
Fun fact: Mel Brooks had the permission of George Lucas but on one condition. There could be no products made in reference to the movie (which makes the merchandizing scene even funnier).
5:10 "We all know Prince Valium is a pill......." anyone?.....hello?..........tough crowd....... or too young a crowd. OIY!! Ok, one of them caught on lol. The open eyed kiss has been freaking women out for years. Nowadays some guys on Ytube as well. Long live Mel and his legacy.
Watching Mel Brooks films are like watching Monty Python films. They are ridiculous and you just have to embrace it and not think too much about them making sense.
I was about 9 when this came out, and even at that age I asked my mum why da fuq Lonestar kissing with his eyes open.
I haven't seen anyone else comment on it but Fun Fact, the scene with Dark helmet and his toy's was unscripted and improvised. Love this movie.
Watching this reaction, I was suddenly struck with the realization that Dark Helmet's plan was basically stolen by Dar'Ben, the antagonist in The Marvels. To be clear, I don't have any issue with The Marvels, but that's pretty funny!
Prince Valium IS a pill...

I laugh at that joke everytime! 😂
If you notice, Lonestar is dressed in the style of Indiana Jones.
Not to sound sexist, but I think guys ( on average ) can appreciate this movie more because we're more in touch with our inner (totally immature) child. :D
Ludacris speed and Tesla Plaid is Elon Musk's homage to Space Balls.
