Farquhar 52" Circular Sawmill powered by Detroit 6-71

Purchased an old circular sawmill and spent 5 months re-assembling it. Built concrete block foundation and 20' x 50' building to keep it dry. Very excited to have it running again. Thanks to all of those friends and family who helped me with this project!
Looking forward to cutting lumber for various woodworking and construction projects!

Just bought a 6-71 detroit for 500.00 now got to get the rest of the mill and parts one day I'll run my own rig been my dream since a little boy. Old man down the dirt road had one my job was a board stacker at 8 years old. Dirt poor but the old man paid me top dollar back then of 5.00hr! 6am till 7:30pm! Then I'd walk down the dirt road home.i was home schooled back then so I worked m-f. The old timer died soon after his wife and some Yankees bought the land and literally pushed it with a bull dozer! Just to build a retirement apartment center. They would go under and I would get my revenge as later bought the abandoned apartment and bulldozed them down. Now in memory of old man Jack and his wife Mrs Betty who helped me and my kin survive many winters I am building a sawmill where his once stood! I farm the back field now where the logs use to be stored

Great video. Not sure how you keep proper blade rpm with a hand throttle but I guess it works for you. Love the sound of a 6-71

Saw blades are hammered to run at a specific speed, find a power unit governor and like others have said run at a constant speed. Also make sure you have the emergency kill flaps incase an injector sticks.

Great video! Would love to see the engine and hear what it sounds like wide open while sawing. I have a 6-71 in my 1978 GMC 9500 dump truck and its been a great engine so far.

Accurate lumber cutting is somewhat controlled by the speed of the saw. You need to find that rpm (maybe 540-600) and hold that blade speed constant, even when you're turning the logs or loading the carriage....no load on the saw with constant speed helps with blade cooling. My dad had a sawmill very similar to yours, nearly exactly, in the 1950's. It was a 5 person operation; log turner, sawyer, edger man, and 2 men tailing the edger and operating the trim saw. He always dogged the logs on the carriage with just the front block, unless the logs were extremely large (22""+) or long (20'+). All the extra work you're doing (extra dogging) is knocking down production and efficiency. His logs, all southern yellow pine, were 16" down to 8" (one 2 X 4 and two 1 X4's if it was straight and he was lucky).....average. He sawed about 7000 bd. ft. per day. If he made 7500 bd. ft. it was an awesome day. (8200 was his largest amount ever) I love your mill, I hope you'll post many more videos. I could watch this all day!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Two thumbs up....that's all I have..........lol ...13

Thank you for the comments. I really just saved the mill from deterioration and saw occasionally just for fun. If I were in it for production I would implement many of the suggestions you and others have listed. This is how I spend my "personal" time away from the normal 8-5. I love tinkering with the old mill, oiling, greasing, sharpening, etc. sometimes I don't even cut anything with it, just maintain it and fire it up now and then. I have restored 3 mills now, the previous 2 were sold to others who wanted them for production, I hate to see these old machines rust or rot away.

6-71 plenty of power , needs to run constant speed!!! as mentioned . Blades are hammered to run at certain RPM 600 650 ext. You don't want to be over speeding that blade!!!! LOL

the trucks I drove that had 6-71 Detroit was 238 HP the mill we used to cut 16 ft 2x10s Burr Oak one end was 10 " the other 11" on 16 footers. so we were cutting wedges for the deck on my trailer whey worked fine.

Get rid of that variable speed governor, and install a limiting speed governor. Run that engine at 1800 RPM, just where she likes to be.

she only likes to be there if she's under a steady load. run a 2-stroke detroit at a steady 1800 rpm with no load and you will eat up piston rings and liners, and if it goes on for too long it will eat up the pistons as well. the dude in the video operating the sawmill knows his job well and doesn't abuse the equipment.

@@marzsit9833 The blade on a circular sawmill is hammered to run true at a certain, fixed speed. Running it at varying speeds will cause runout. Also, many hundreds of thousands of Detroit engines run at one speed on things such as generators, air compressors, pumps, and even sawmills.

Circular saws are hammered to run at set rpms (usually 540rpm ). Also your blade needs the rpms it is hammered for to 'open up' and run cool . Never lug a 'jimmy', they are two stroke engines.

The rpm on these type of saws is set by the wood you intend to saw which dictates the feet per minute of the rim of the saw. 8,000-10,000 feet per minute is the range. Our 48” saw spinning at 750 rpm is traveling 9,420 feet per minute, an excellent choice for softwoods.
