    I just got the four string Ibanez SRMS800 Deep Twilight a few days ago. Waiting for a mint Mono case. Beautiful instrument. Plays like a dream with lots of tone options. If I had string questions, I would call Sweetwater. They are very knowledgeable and very easy to deal with. I always use Schaller strap locks, which are now called S Locks. The screw and button are now one piece and used a hex head. I didn't know if the Schallers would arrive in time for my next gig. I called Sweetwater and the rep upgraded the shipping for free. Sweetwater rules! Tomorrow my strings go on, La Bella Gold White Nylon Tape Wound Deep Talkin' light gauge. Can't wait to gig with it. Thanks for doing this video.

    I thanks a lot, I appreciate that! Haha, I know the struggle. If you wanted to upgrade, I'd recommend going straight to the six unless your band uses 7 strings or something. I loved upgrading to the 5 string to get that low B, but getting a 6 string opened up so much more for me because of the new C string. Maybe it's just my style, but I play way more stuff on the C than the B. As for the standard vs mixed, if you are playing in standard E or D, I don't think a multi scale would really be needed. They look pretty cool though, so it's totally your call :)

    Hi David! Thanks for reaching out! This is the first of three videos covering the Ibanez SRMS806. In my opinion, they are worth it if you play in dropped tuning, and have a B string. It works great at keeping tension on the lower strings! Finding strings may be an issue though, so I'd check out part 3 for some string recommendations if you are wanting to get a multi scale, because not all strings will fit.

    The QC issues you listed is what's keeping me from buying the Ibanez EHB1506. I live in a country where I get the basses from Thomann through a retailer, so it takes a lot of time to get it in the country and it's a major hassle to return it if it's defective. I bought the new Harley Benton 6 and it arrived with the fretboard unglued on the whole 1st fret area... It seems that Ibanez has plenty of these issues...

    Hey Ben: I'm late getting to the multi-scale party and you've probably found a set of strings that you dig by now, but posting for anyone else checking out this video as well. I have a 6'er that needs super long strings and D'Addario nickel XLs are my usual go-to… sadly they discontinued the 6 string SL set, but you can still get the 5 string 45-130 super long set and order an individual C string. They also offer the NYXL nickels in super long 32-130, if hex cores are okay (they feel just little bit stiffer, IMO)

    Wouldnt fanned frets be more effective for a guitarist? I’m not saying it’s useless for bass, but (metal/rock) guitarists bend and use vibrato and do stuff that hurts my poor fingers with too much tension. Am I wrong? Lemme know what you think reader I’m curious

  • @BenJenkins_youtube

    @BenJenkins_youtube

    4 жыл бұрын

    Great question! I'm not a scientist by any means, but I know thicker strings have to vibrate more in order to create sound. The multi scale creates a stability in my B string that I never had before when using dropped tunings. This can be seen in part 3 of this review series where I tie up loose ends and play a ditty in drop F. Guitarist use smaller strings, so I dont know if they experience the same problems we do.

  • @koffieverslaafde627

    @koffieverslaafde627

    4 жыл бұрын

    Ben Jenkins we have the same problems, when I tune my B to an A 26.5” is too little. 27” is enough. But 26.5” is too much for comfortable lead stuff with .10 strings (.11 is really thick, .10 is normal, .09 is light for standard tuning)

  • @BenJenkins_youtube

    Out of curiosity how is the clearcoat holding up. I'm a bit stumped as to why that would help... other than to provide another layer to wear through. Of course when I think clearcoat it's a urethane, lacquer, etc. Is this one of those thicker polyester resin type finishes? I'd think a thin piece of polycarbonate with an appropriate adhesive would be the best option... then the finish can be whatever it is. awe hell yea, stringjoy for life. ive always hated the HORRIBLE variation in string tension and it didnt matter what brand i used they were always either kinda off or a mile off, like no joke 8 or 10 pounds heavier on the high end and you had to choose between a solid B-string and unplayable highs or comfortable highs and a floppity B. i tried a fanned fret for a while, hated it, just did not like the angle of play, never again. anyway stringjoy set me up with some 145-45's so you got a nice bendy medium gauge for the high g that plays like buttered silk and that monstrously huge 145 so you can drop A that bitch and it still plays tight. your lows have more mass and incredible warmth but your highs are thin enough for a good twang that responds well to distortion. every metalhead needs to check out stringjoy. game changing shit right there and you wont hear me using the words "game changer" very often, especially with strings.

    Fanned Fret / Multi Scale Instruments - Are They Really Worth It? If you want to seriously drop tune, especially with instruments with extra bass strings - yes. The idea is you increase the scale length to maintain adequate string tension as you drop tune to lower pitches. This keeps the strings from getting too flabby and sloppy for good tone and playability. The "fanned" frets and their improved ergonomics are just a nice by-product of the multiple scale lengths. In the end, if you drop tune enough, your string will get sloppy - and then it's time to go multi-scale.

    Strong width = string spacing. I've looked for the proper terminology because it's important to know this before you order an instrument. It doesn't have 2 different scale lengths, it has as many scales as there are strings. Think of it like a grand piano where each string has a different length. So low b is 35.5, E is idk... Anything that, with the ADG strings would make it to 33.5 for the C string. Why is it strange that the bass has 1 truss rod? To my knowledge, most basses if not all will only have 1. Do you mean that it doesn't have graphite or wtv material other reinforcing material inside the neck? Otherwise great vid.

    I appreciate your feedback, and I'm glad you broke this down for anyone who may stumble across this video in the future! When I spoke about two different scale lengths, i was referring to the extremes, as these lengths will be what determines if your favorite brand of strings will work on this type of bass. A single truss rod was weird to me because my ibanez sr506 has 2. Maybe the srms806 has some other material to help support the neck, I'm not sure as I havent looked that far into it.

    @@BenJenkins_youtube your comment about string length (related to scale length) was very valuable! Not many people think about this and we're up to a nasty surprise at the first string change (didn't think of it myself initially haha). I just wanted to press that multiscale means what it means as in, there are multiple scales since each string has its own scale. It's the ideal way guitars and basses should've been imo since, if done well, scale length is optimized for each string. As for the truss rod, 2 truss rods is rare in most basses but more frequent the more you increase the width of the neck (6, 7, 8 strings for example). The twist in the neck you saw initially could've been due to misadjustment. If one is shorter and the other looser, the shorter side will bow and the looser side will hump, creating that nasty twist! Wanted to share the excitement: I'm waiting for my Kiesel Zeus Bass Multiscale. It's a headless bass so I'm very excited to use it!
