Fanned Fret / Multi Scale Instruments - Are they really worth it? (Part 2)

Музыка

This is part 2 of my multi scale fanned fret series. This video is all about how the SRMS806 sounds compared to the SR506. I will also be discussing the pros and cons of upgrading to a multi scaled instrument.

I have the Japan Prestige version of the 506. It actually sucks compared to the normal 506. The separate bridge saddle pieces are absolute cast garbage and they break easy,I have mine all glued up. And to buy one saddle assy from Ibanez is like 80 bucks. I might buy a cheap used 506 and just keep the neck from the prestige and sell the prestige body.

I heard the same music played on both instruments; I really thought that it sounded way way better on your old bass guitar with traditional frets instead of fanned frets that are on your new bass guitar. Maybe on your new fanned fret bass you need to open up the tone control on it and make sure that the pickups and settings are the same on both bass guitars. Tom Sisson

Hmm... This video should be enough to get you more subs than you have at the moment. I guess there are fewer starting bassists to flock to bass player who are good. I play guitar and I'm just going to pay up and accept the situation requires me to get my order bass for my own work. First question, what was bad on the first bass that you had to swap parts out from the second bass? Secondly, where did you buy your bass, SW? I asked the second question because I've gotten a bad, $1,400 guitar from *SW.* I really burns me up to receive a supposedly inspected guitar come all fk'd up with shoddy bridge posts and some loose strings as well as way over tuned strings. Glad I didn't pay for the *extra special setup* and do my own. Because that guitar's neck had a bad twist too. I will be buying the SRMS805, unless you could give me a positive purpose to have the extra string... Killer video too, thanks man!

  • @BenJenkins_youtube

    @BenJenkins_youtube

    4 жыл бұрын

Thanks for the kind words! I explain the flaws in part 1, but the flaw in the first bass was fret buzz that couldn't be eliminated. It was probably caused by a warped neck or the nut was filed down too far. The second bass was missing a set screw in the bridge. I had Guitar Center order the basses from the Ibanez warehouse. Damn, $1,400 is a lot of money to pay or a defective guitar, that sucks! I prefer 6 strings because the c string is great for chords and pops, but string # really comes down to your style of playing. I dont want to sound like I'm pushing for views, but part 3 has some important info on string lengths that you may find useful if you've never owned a multi scale bass before. Thanks again for the support! I hope your bass arrives without any issues!

You're a siiick bassist. I have almost the same 2 basses. Except I have the SR505 & SR805. The mahogany body of the 505 makes it growl a little more over the 805 with the poplar burl and I think ash. I may be wrong on the the body wood. The one thing I found out is that Ibanez is hard to deal with if there are any issues. I have 2 - 805's. One in natural, one in DTF - deep twilight flat. My DTF is a 2017 and the neck is warped. They won't make me a new one, even if I pay for it. Sad. How do you throw away a $900 guitar? Fender makes replacements. Why can't Ibanez? I have a guy that'll custom make me a better one from maple. That's $1000. Hmmm. What to do?!? Thanks for a good video.

Thanks for the support! Haha, thats cool we have the same models almost, they sound awesome! I hate to hear abt the warped neck, have you tried looking into local repair shops? They may have a solution that could save your bass.

@@BenJenkins_youtube yes. I live in the twin cities of MN. There's a couple really good shops but they just want to level it by removing the frets and planing it. Then reinstall the frets. Then the neck is just weaker. $750. I know the owner of Benavente Guitars. He'll make a really nice neck and set it perfectly for $1000. The whole situation almost makes me want to look at Cort guitars. Which makes Ibanez and a few others.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. For that price you might as well get a new bass. I guess it depends on if the bass has any sentimental value though. Maple neck and fretboard or just maple neck? If it's the fretboard too, that'll change the tone of your bass pretty drastically.

i am on my third 805... 2 had defects and no quality control whatsoever..i am hoping 3rd times a charm..be prepared to set this up because the first two were unplayable out of the box...the bridge pickup was completely unattached....resting against the strings...the wood was deep red...no topaz whatsoever....very unhappy with the first two....dead pickup on the first one, but a beautiful finish....

Thanks man! Currently I'm playing on the D'darrio long scales they came with. Another option is custom strings from stringjoy.com, but I haven't tried them yet. The longer scale of fanned fretts makes it kind of hard to find strings, so make sure to verify string length when shopping!

@@BenJenkins_youtube Thanks for the reply! I researched this on Talkbass where there is a Sticky in the strings forum. DR Bass String Winding Length: Short Scale = 34" Ball to Taper (or Silk) * Long Scale = 38" Ball to Taper (or Silk) Extra Long Scale - 40.7" Ball to Taper (or Silk) My favorite strings on earth are DR Sunbeams and it appears they should work.

@@dgregory4178 hey man, if it works, go for it! I bought a set of nickel wound D'addarios (my usual) to do a set up, and they were too short. Of course I realized this after I had already cut them haha. Maybe DRs come with longer scale naturally; I don't know for sure. All I know is the Ibanez website recommends super long scale D'addarios, and the only way I can guarantee that I'm not wasting my money, is by getting really long strings. Bass strings are too expensive to risk it! Let me know if the DRs work, I'd happily make that switch!

So your only real complaint about multi-scales is that the strings are no longer sloppy and require normal fretting pressure. ooh and ahh! To an experienced player, this is not a can, not even a challenge, its the normal adapting your style to the instrument at hand. Availability of your preferred brand of stings and quality issues with your bass are not relevant to multi-scales in general.

  • @BenJenkins_youtube

No real complaints regarding string tension, just giving people a heads up on the difference of playability from regular to multi with the same dropped tuning. Strings and quality of instrument are very relevant actually. This video series is about pros and cons of investing in a multiscale instrument. I say investment because they aren't cheap, and there wasn't a whole lot of info online specifically for bassists. Like it or not, there are cons and sharing my experience has helped people to make the best decision for themselves. I'm happy I could help them.
