    The tone on that B string is literally the only reason I want to adopt this fan fret thing. I truly believe this is the future for over-4-string bass players. That B string is already floppy enough as it is, and then if you plan to drop tune it at all, the tone just goes to mud. The fan fret/multi-scale design keeps that B string nice and tight!! I will absolutely go with the flow on this one!

    I've put d'Addario Chrome flatwounds on my SRFF805, as I love the thumpy, warm lows and mids. With the longer scale on the .132 string, there is such a clear definition when doing runs down low! Current work in progress: adding a Glockenklang preamp, and changing the pickups. Anyone has a good advice for what pickups to choose, given my flavor of warm lows and mids?

    That punchy and gnarly sound reminds me a lot of freakin' Dingwall and i'm not even joking. I'm using quite a lot of a plugin called Djinnbass, which is basically sampled Dingwall done by a very capable guy and it comes VERY close. This bass looks amazing, sounds amazing and is not overpriced. Ibanez doing great job as always!

    Don't get this wrong... I think no bass sounds good with such a tuning. But if any, then fanned frets are the way to go.

  • @vatases

    @vatases

    8 жыл бұрын

    +BassTheWorld.com Yeah, I'm sure that's debatable. I've seen some guys do that to accompany 8 string guitars. Haven't tried that tuning myself (or played any extended range bass for that matter), but I'm thinking of buying this bass because the fanned frets are pure sex.

  • @kymfairall9662

    @kymfairall9662

    +sesmusic It could do, its a 35.5 scale on the low string which would really help but for F# you'd most likely need it set up and change your string gauge. I've heard a great sounds from dingwall basses in F#but the scale length is longer again. Probably go for a 36 inch scale or longer but there are a lot variables besides that to. But it's definitely possible. (Sorry is I rambled on a bit there :)

  • @vatases

    @vatases

    +Kym Fairall That makes sense! I've looked at the Dingwall's, but they're a bit too pricey for me. Might take a look at a longer scale Ibanez.

  • @dsaillant811

    @dsaillant811

    8 жыл бұрын

    If the price of a dingwall is too much, it's unlikely you'll be able to find too much more in the 36" area that's affordable. My advice would be to get the 6 string version of the Ibanez (extra string, more tension I guess? Don't quote me on that, me no do good science) if that's to your taste and get some big-ass strings like the 190 set from Kalium. That'll give you at least a decent sound on a slightly less-than-ideal bass.

    I have played electric and double bass for a long time. I've never owned a fanned fret bass. Most players do not play a fanned fret bass. This begs the question... What is the benefit of a fanned fret bass? It looks super cool... just not sure of its function... somewhat like scalloped fretboards...

    +gazfunk Generally you want to be "on the fret marker" on a fretless for the best intonation. It's hard enough as it is, and I guess there's really no way to "fan out" frets if they're not really there.

  • @dsaillant811

    +gazfunk You could do it theoretically, but the spacing between the lines on a 35.5 string would be crazy. There'd be a lot of stretching between your fingers, which is what the fanned frets are sort of supposed to reduce

    Well, It is the exact opposite. I have played many many basses, and found a lot of them amazing, Among them, I have played (and owned) IbaneZ, and switched to another, since they were not satisfying. I never said all basses were shit. I just said that THIS ONE in particular has a dull sound. Whether I play Dingwall or not is irrelevant, since I could name like 15 brands I love and still do not play... and that still does not make the sr ff any less "way below average quality" =) It is not all black or white in this life, my friend
