I bought a BTB805ms and it should be here this week, super excited! Been writing for years and it's definitely a pain in the arse changing tunings and having my old basses not handle Drop B so this thing is worth. Tunings I write/play in: E Standard C Standard Drop D Drop C Drop B Drop A Do you know if I would need to change the setup on my bass at all? I've never done it before and admittedly I always wrote more than I played until recently. I have finally gotten used to treating my 5th string as a whole other string and it really adds a lot to writing basslines!

The QC issues you listed is what's keeping me from buying the Ibanez EHB1506. I live in a country where I get the basses from Thomann through a retailer, so it takes a lot of time to get it in the country and it's a major hassle to return it if it's defective. I bought the new Harley Benton 6 and it arrived with the fretboard unglued on the whole 1st fret area... It seems that Ibanez has plenty of these issues...

I just got the four string Ibanez SRMS800 Deep Twilight a few days ago. Waiting for a mint Mono case. Beautiful instrument. Plays like a dream with lots of tone options. If I had string questions, I would call Sweetwater. They are very knowledgeable and very easy to deal with. I always use Schaller strap locks, which are now called S Locks. The screw and button are now one piece and used a hex head. I didn't know if the Schallers would arrive in time for my next gig. I called Sweetwater and the rep upgraded the shipping for free. Sweetwater rules! Tomorrow my strings go on, La Bella Gold White Nylon Tape Wound Deep Talkin' light gauge. Can't wait to gig with it. Thanks for doing this video.

Good to know the DR strings work for multiscale, I use those currently, but I was looking at SRFF806 or BTB866sc, I figure the SR makes more sense since I tune to Ab and it has the slightly longer scale, and doesn't weigh close to 15 pounds lol.

I heard the same music played on both instruments; I really thought that it sounded way way better on your old bass guitar with traditional frets instead of fanned frets that are on your new bass guitar. Maybe on your new fanned fret bass you need to open up the tone control on it and make sure that the pickups and settings are the same on both bass guitars. Tom Sisson

Hey Ben: I'm late getting to the multi-scale party and you've probably found a set of strings that you dig by now, but posting for anyone else checking out this video as well. I have a 6'er that needs super long strings and D'Addario nickel XLs are my usual go-to… sadly they discontinued the 6 string SL set, but you can still get the 5 string 45-130 super long set and order an individual C string. They also offer the NYXL nickels in super long 32-130, if hex cores are okay (they feel just little bit stiffer, IMO)

So your only real complaint about multi-scales is that the strings are no longer sloppy and require normal fretting pressure. ooh and ahh! To an experienced player, this is not a can, not even a challenge, its the normal adapting your style to the instrument at hand. Availability of your preferred brand of stings and quality issues with your bass are not relevant to multi-scales in general.
@BenJenkins_youtube2 жыл бұрын
No real complaints regarding string tension, just giving people a heads up on the difference of playability from regular to multi with the same dropped tuning. Strings and quality of instrument are very relevant actually. This video series is about pros and cons of investing in a multiscale instrument. I say investment because they aren't cheap, and there wasn't a whole lot of info online specifically for bassists. Like it or not, there are cons and sharing my experience has helped people to make the best decision for themselves. I'm happy I could help them.
@normbarrows2 жыл бұрын
Fanned Fret / Multi Scale Instruments - Are They Really Worth It? If you want to seriously drop tune, especially with instruments with extra bass strings - yes. The idea is you increase the scale length to maintain adequate string tension as you drop tune to lower pitches. This keeps the strings from getting too flabby and sloppy for good tone and playability. The "fanned" frets and their improved ergonomics are just a nice by-product of the multiple scale lengths. In the end, if you drop tune enough, your string will get sloppy - and then it's time to go multi-scale.
