Family Planning in the Ancient World

From the earliest days of history, women's bodies have been central to reproduction, health, and civilization. Today we talk to Arienne Rich about her research on the earliest known details on abortion, contraception, and family planning in the Ancient Near East, and Ancient Greece and Rome. What part did religion play? What examples exist of those societies who supported abortion? What makes societies choose to outlaw it? Here are the roots of one of the most divisive debates in the modern world.

I actually wrote a paper in college on this subject. I know that chaste tree (vitex) and mistletoe we're used in this way. Chaste tree berries could be used in small amounts as birth control as well. Because plant medicine was something that many women had a basic knowledge of, mainly women and midwives assisted in birth control and (medicinal) abortion and it didn't carry the stigma that it does now, for the most part.

Feminism can only be taken seriously in an affluent society like ours. For most of human history women were by necessity "baby factories" because infant mortality was so high. I've read that before 1500 only 50% of children made it to age 2. Furthermore, children were necessary as labor in the family business and they were also the only source of support for elderly parents. In such circumstances, it was a matter of survival to have as many children as possible, not to prevent their conception nor to abort them as fetuses. I am certain that for such reasons contraception and abortion were only used sparingly before the Modern Era.

  • @LibertarianLeninistRants

_" I am certain that for such reasons contraception and abortion were only used sparingly before the Modern Era."_ I would state the counter hypothesis. Family planning through things like contraception and abortion was probably more necessary in earlier eras, since the food security was lower. Most people lived on subsistence farming, so a) in order to better match the birth of children to the seasons (from winter to planting to harvesting, they all required different amount of works and provided different amount of food supply); and b) in order to avoid having children after bad harvests, during droughts and famines, where food security was extra low and a newborn child would just increase the risk for the parents as well while also having low survival chances. So for both cases a) and b) you would want at least some family planning going on, as its just ineffective or outright dangerous for the survival of the family to just randomly make new babies all the time

I argue that the surgical removal of a fetus would have been quite rare in antiquity as it would have been risky due to infection and lack of medical knowledge. I don't know of any primary sources that describe surgical removal of a fetus before the birthing process began. I have read about accounts of babies being removed during birth because they had gotten stuck and the women weren't able to get them out. This type of "abortion" was even performed during the Victorian era, my great grandmother being one of the recipients of this procedure. I have even read primary sources that reference herbal remedies for terminating pregnancies during colonial times. Therefore, I don't think it's fair to say that women were more free in antiquity than they were during recent history or in Christian Europe. Ancient Greece and Rome were strict patriarchies, what can be said about their societies can also be applied to the European Middle Ages, etc. Women lived rich and vibrant lives in both circumstances.

there are 3 Levitical laws that are against the wasting of semen: the law against gay sex, the law against bestiality, and the third one. They are coupled right next to each other because the early Jews recognized one thing: the wasting of semen meant the wasting of human life. So yeah, even if some of them did commit abortion, early Judaism was still against the idea of it. Genesis 2 "be fruitful and multiply". Exodus 20 "do not commit murder". The New Testament's respect for Greek ideas like as virtue ethics and the immortal soul. So yeah, to be pro-life is not a new idea. People need to not make excuses for murder.
