El Rey Lobo: The Wolf King of 12th Century Medieval Murcia

The Wolf King of Murcia: Ibn Mardanish and the Second Taifa Period in Eastern Al-Andalus.
Before Game of Thrones was a thought in our imagination, literature and television there was man in medieval Iberia who would reshape trade, the borders of Kingdoms and would forever define the complicated relationship of Medieval Christians, Muslims and Jews in the Medieval World.
That man commonly known as El Rey Lobo or the Wolf King was officially known as Abu ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Mardanīš.
Surrounded by rivals and potential allies the Wolf King set out to make medieval Murcia a force to be reckoned with as he expanded and fought to ensure the prosperity of his kingdom, family and people.
From working with Christian kingdoms to going to war with fellow Islamic kingdoms he was a man who looked beyond religion and ethnic bias in order to achieve what he wanted.
As he expanded his impact would greatly impact trade in the medieval Mediterranean, Iberian coinage, architecture, traditional borders and the way that medieval chroniclers saw powerful Muslims in medieval Iberia.
But as he grew older caliphates and dynasties came and went into the abyss of history and a new power arose. Slowly the Almoravids came under conquest of the Almohads and the old wolf found himself in a world that was changing and he foresaw a future that would not bode well for his family.
Tragically he spent his last days trying to negotiate power between his Muslim enemies and his heirs who would follow him.
From battlefields to Christian courts the wolf king left a legacy of cunning ambition and one that would never be forgotten.
This episode explores a series known as "Heroes or Villains in Medieval Iberia where the audience decides if a certain historical character is a hero, a villain or if it is more complicated than one over the other.

No one said that look at the art in the intro at the 0:21 the Moors there are depicted as white pf lighter skinned. The guy in this video is a Member of HAMAA (Historical African Martial Arts Association), he researches Moorish and other North African Martial arts, HAMAA has North African members too. I'm member we don't claim Moors were all black but there were ofcourse black Moors that's all. HAMAA acknowledges and celebrates the diverse Martial arts of all Africans.

From what I've learned in this video and by the medieval standards I would say so far he appears to me as a hero 100%. He has a cool nickname, he improves the prospects of his territory while successfully resisting the ever encoraching Al Mohads, he is not driven by zealousy but rather what is best for the realm. I don't think you can get much better than that in the middle ages.

Isnt "hero" and "villian" , not just an objective point of view but highly subjective as well? @@theonlygoodlookinghabsburg2081 I disagree, while I agree most things are subjective or culturally and religiously relative, I think there are some things that are definitely Human Universals. That's why I think the "Silver Rule" is a better rule to follow (Do not do to others, that which you wouldn't want done to yourself) rather than the "Golden rule" (do to others, which you would want done to you) - we see how that worked with European Colonialism (i.e. Christian and Liberal Tyranny and Genocide). Because lets be Frank, there is nothing subjective about not liking Genocide, having one's family murdered, raped or harmed, being treated unjustly, starvation, etc. Throughout History around the World, these things are all Timelessly, Universally and Objectively seen as Bad, and not a subjective opinion. Why depicting El Rey Lobo as a sub-saharan African? The Muslims that invaded the Peninsula were Arabs and Maghrebi and there were no black people among the ruling classes as far as we know. In fact, the rulers often took Christian wives and concubines and their offsprings occasionally became heirs, as in the case of Abd al-Rahman III (890-961), the Umayyad Emir and first Caliph of Cordoba, son of a Christian princess and described as having ‘white skin, blue eyes and light color beard that he dyed black to gain respect among the nobles’.

10:25 Ibn Tumart is very interesting, one of the most successful false prophets ever. He went to the Middle East and studied theology and then came back and led the movement by pretending to be Al Mahdi (muslims believe Jesus and Al Mahdi will both come at the end of times -- not all of them do but yea). He was an important figure in a movement that was in large parts faith related while being a charlatan himself.

Shalom, the so-called black man Aboriginal to the planet. He's not African nor any other. He is literally the father of us all ,and it is only racism that prevents most of the world from acknowledging this. The so-called black man is Human History. If you know of any other race of men who are responsible for human civilization and progress ,please point that out. I ask this because I am a world class historian and when I go looking for the beginning of literally everything. The only man I find is him. Please read Anacalypsis by G. Higgins. Ruins of empire by volney.. I only cite so-called white people due to the fact of white supremacist thinking about History. To prove my bona fides let state boldly that every civilization in the past was a so-called black civilization. And history tells us that the indoasiatic invaded the black lands and literally stole his history, identities, lands, and achievements. If I lie, prove me wrong or shut the hell up. But on a deeper level, what is it about whiteness that prevents most of you from accepting the truth?
