    In 2006 I had my newly constructed house closed cell spray foamed from sill to attic peak . I have found that the strength of the monolithic shell is one of the best things about the product. Sound deadening is another i live on hill with many high wind days. Very reassuring

    There is probably nothing more frustrating than talking with officials about insulation R values and the difference with Spray Foam. The question I ask them- If you are stranded at-30 and had a choice to wrap your body in fibreglass batts or step into a Styrofoam box to survive which wold you choose?

    Thank you for the video. It was very informative. I have batt insulation in my two homes. I've thought about a spray foam done in the one home to see how it goes. But I have heard a house can't be sold with foam insulation installed and that it has to be removed before being able to close on the sale. I've also heard of wood rotting because of moisture being trapped. With foam insulation wiring can't be added. IS this true? Can you address these issues that I've been told about maybe in a future video. There are so many things that I hear about it. Lastly, can it be sprayed in a wall where batt insulation has already been installed or does the drywall have to be removed and the insulation removed? Thanks for any information.

I’m in Dallas, TX and looking to spray my new home with open cell. I saw a Matt Risinger video about open cell being a bit more flammable than other insulations and it scared me a bit… he advertised a fire resistant coating that can be sprayed on top of the open cell. Do you have any experience with that kind of spray product? Any thoughts on open cell being flammable?

    I'm down in Central Texas. I'm considering a project where the walls will be built from 2'x2'x4' concrete blocks. It will be easier to spray foam the insides of the walls, and use the exterior face of the blocks as the finished surface (no extra money for siding). Assuming I furr out the interior walls to hold drywall, shiplap, etc..., how important do you think it is to have a thermal break between the concrete and the furring strips? Something like 1" pink board between the strips and the concrete.

    My problem with spray foam is you have domestic companies importing Chinese chemicals/foams that aren’t actually tested in Canada, and we are taking their word for it when it comes to efficacy and safety; China is known to lie about nearly everything. I only trust big names like BASF. The other problem is that it’s so expensive. There needs to be some sort of government rebates or something to bring down the cost to make it comparable with that fibreglass garbage.

  • @SprayJones

    @SprayJones

    In Canada anyone with a foam going into houses or commercial has to pass CCMC certification of all the 3rd party testing. I am not sure China companies can do that. I agree on the rebate idea. Talk with conservative party leaders.

    Cheaper foam would help. 12 years ago the foam was drastically cheaper then compared to now and people had the same thoughts. "Oh it's too expensive". It is a mindset issue. No one expects hardwoods to be closer in price to carpet or lino, so why do we expect rigid insulations to be in the league of non-skilled batts.

    R-Value is still very important. But good insulation needs to have resistance for heat AND air/vapor. Spray foam is not the only solution for this. Smart framing, good WRB, exterior insulation, and a properly installed air barrier are all critical components of a modern building (and should be in building code). Combining those methods with blown-in insulation or PROPERLY installed batts will be fine.

    @professionalinspectionserv94687 ай бұрын

    Okay, I think I have binged on all of your videos over the last couple of days or most anyway. Take what I am saying as my thoughts, not perfect but as a builder and current inspector with experience, I do have opinions. I am not against the principles and concept in reality they are Joseph Lstiburek founding principles of Building Science. Many I have noticed have tried to adopt them without due credit. Thats okay, I am not the thought police. If you have been in his classes, you know Joe is not short on words or always politically correct…LOL. Like I mentioned I think the foam insulation is overall beneficial if done right. I also think that it is very expensive when compared to other options. I know that it will probably outperform other options, but it still comes down to money. A new Corvette will outperform a Toyota but not all can afford a Corvette. At least with traditional insulation a homeowner can do it themselves to save big money on labor, not so with spray foam. I have not looked into it but I am sure the lobbyist have demanded licenses just to get the product in raw form and the equipment will be expensive as well, not DIY friendly. Good for the installers. I think purposely its pricing has been pushed to similarly compare to other insulation options. Not because it cost more to produce but using all the "benefits" to support the extra costs. So do I think some over costs are happening at the supplier/manufacturer and the installer, yes of course. If you build a perfect home no one can afford it. Well, most folks anyway. You’re making the case for the product, and I understand it, that is your business. I do think you should share the drawbacks; nothing is perfect, and this product will come to pass as something else comes along even better. Remember when they thought aluminum wiring and Federal Pacific Panels were so great? The major drawback I see at this time is inflated costs, and eventual roof repair. Roofs do not last forever, and eventually the sheathing will need replacement in some areas when shingles (most roofs are composite or fiberglass for the same reasons, costs) are replaced. It is very easy to replace on a typical vented roof but not so much on a spray-foam now conditioned attic. Of course, it can be done but it will cost more. Any future renovations, gaining access to wires/plumbing will be more difficult as well. How does arching wires in a wall or ceiling assembly react with the product? So, if a new home buyer has a choice of conventional insulation and spray foam the cost, I guess will be quite a bit more as even the builder will try and get in on the act… Now if the cost of spray foam insulation and conventional are similar then it is a no brainer. There is less labor involved and is quite a bit faster so it should be less expensive, but I do not think it is. Again, I think it can be a great upgrade to our current homes and new builds but as always, we may need to let the new thing wear off as prices stabilize like all new things that come out very expensive than the price decreases due to market. Thanks again for your hard work on the videos. I know you cannot be unbiased as it is your business and you need to sell it, kind of like me recommending a home inspection…LOL. Thanks again. I forgot, I could recommend this to a client if they could afford it, and if they are replacing their roof, preferably metal roof properly installed, and all renovations are done.
