    Great point about fire. Given the amount of time we keep our houses the extra cost of rock wool seems well worth it. My friend's family had a house burn down and lost everything. They literally just got out with the clothes on their backs. It took decades for them to recover from the financially, even though they had insurance.

    In my reply to ralph sampson I've detailed why I favor Rockwool over fiberglass batts. But over Rockwool, I favor High density blown in cellulose. It has nearly the same benefits as Rockwool does, flame spread, sound control, vapor diffusion, etc. etc. but it easier to install than batts. High density cellulose, flows in, and around, and packs into every nook and cranny, around every pipe, wire, box, around blocking and backing. It goes where even the best fitted, the most carefully cut batt materials can't go.

    Say your roof leaks, the weight of the water on your fiberglass will ruin its entire ability to work as an insulator by compressing the fibres ; permanently. Then you no longer have just a leaking roof to fix, you have a massive problem finding the damage in your attic and replacing the insulation. Not with rockwool. It’s the only insulation I will use . Not to mention, it’s a lot less itchy and dusty, still wear PPE but if you accidentally touch it, you can just use cold water to wash it off , so long as you don’t rub your hands , working the needle like fibres into your skin.

    I would only use stone wool for isolation of a wooden house. Rockwool is only one producer. I would never let an isolation that burns and/or produces toxic fumes near a wooden house. In a zone where outside fire is a danger, like in a forest, you put one or two 45 mm of heavy stiff stone wool on the outside of the outer walls and on the roof. For the windows you could have permanent shutters with a minimum 30mm heavy stone wool in the centre like a sandwich, a fire retardant cover that turns to the outside when the shutters are closed. Permanent shutters work also well, where there is a lot of high winds. Between the isolation and the not burning weather protection, I keep a space for ventilation. As I live in a could country I vent the vapour to the outside. In my case the weather protection would be 0.7 mm thick corrugated steel screwed on. We have lots of storms. In the house itself I use 150mm or 200mm normal stone wool inside the 2x6 or 2x8 studs I use for the outer wall and roof. For the inside walls I use staggered studs and heavy stone wool for sound dampening.

    The rock wool has no vapor barrier so, It's not good for thermal insulation in an exterior wall. Also, it isn't much better than fiberglass batts for sound attenuation. Lastly, rock wool costs twice as much as fiberglass batts and it sucks to install. The wool fibers gets in your skin. It isn't really "wool". It's actually a bi-product of the steel industry. I guess I should say, "I hate the stuff". Edit: Mineral Wool is made from steel byproducts. You're correct about the rock wool being from stone. It still sucks to use and to buy!

    They are close but it’s still a lot quieter. Installation of the material and its quality contribute to the quality of soundproofing, but the density of rockwool helps reduce sound transmission of ~ 10 decibels through a wall. Fiberglass, on the other hand, blocks ~ 4 to 10 decibels. Not all areas need a Vapor barrier. I’m in a very dry climate so I don’t. Fiberglass itches just as bad or worse to me.

  • @RalphSampson...

    @RalphSampson...

    @@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Yes, I am in Georgia. Vapor barrier is a must. The Sound Transmission Coefficient of rock wool or mineral wool is like 52 where as fiberglass is around 48. Its cost here in Atlanta is about $0.93/SF for mineral wool or rock wool, whereas, fiberglass is around $0.49/SF. Fiberglass doesn't bother me. I guess some it does.

    I've used plenty of both Rockwool and the pink stuff. For me, the Rockwool is far superior. It cuts like butter and holds it shape well. It goes in easy and is unbelievably quiet compared to pink stuff. It doesn't need a vapor barrier due to its moisture resistance and density. It's fireproof and melt-proof. Finally, after working with it all day I don't have any itching unlike the pink stuff. I've also opened up walls and found pink insulation has turned black with mold through the thickness of it, while the rockwool structures have remained dry and mold free.

    Non permeable vapor barriers are of questionable value in all Climate Zones, they can and have contributed to building damages in the tens, perhaps hundreds of millions of dollars across North America. Where vapor barriers are required, continuous sheets are much more effective than paper or foil faced batts and so called 'Smart' vapor control materials are better than the most commonly used polyethylene plastic sheets. Fiberglass batts are easier to stuff into a stud cavity and and often are but stuffing them results in lower thermal efficacy. Because you have to carefully trim, cut, notch and FIT Rockwool around every electrical box, backing, blocking, wire and pipe, the efficacy is improved. Fiberglass, once wet, stays wet, it's like a sponge, where Rockwool sheds water and unlike with fiberglass, hot humid air doesn't flow through it on it's way to the cold surface. Wet insulation in the wall cavity equals rot. Rockwool is much better at controlling flame spread than is fiberglass which has essentially zero value controlling flame spread. Sound attenuation, I don't know much about other than it is not a simple question of which one is better. The answer is 'it depends'. Depends on what frequencies you're trying to control, depends on what materials are enclosing the batts. Today's fiberglass does not bother me significantly but my reaction to rockwool is zero. Some fiberglass from decades ago was truly horrible and it was often possible to pull out shard like fibers that would penetrate the skin. Today's pink stuff seems very uniform with fine, light fibers that are fairly well bonded to each other. All that being said some Building scientists say that in many, perhaps in all cases, insulation does not belong in the stud cavities. Insulation should be applied over the building sheathing and stud cavities left empty. Building Science expert engineer Dr. Joseph Lstibuerk explains the physics associated with vented and unvented attics. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fphs0tyCpZebdps.html The videos I've seen featuring Lstiburek are all worth viewing. The one I've linked here focuses on roofs and attics but the principles are the same. He has others focusing on the building envelope as whole but this one is the first I still had open in a tab. I would highly recommend this to everyone planning their dream home. Green building advisor has very good information on all things wall, roof, concrete and what works in what Climate Zones and what is going to be a disaster. www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/

    @@GeeKayKayGee That's great information. Come to think of it, we usually are required by the architect to use mineral wool when they want sound attenuation. Mineral wool is nasty. Maybe, rock wool is not as bad. The pink stuff has never been an issue for us...well, not for me and most of my guys. Enveloping the structure with insulation on the outside vs in the cavity makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the links. I'm going there now.

    Well I guess it's ok but if you are on a scaffold or a ladder I'm just gonna work in another room. I worked on a Slingshot amusement job doing drywall in the office and they told us the guy who invented that is from Australia and works doing carpentry in his underwear. Sure enough, that's how he works. Slingshot ride.

    "Quiet Rock" is a waste of money. You can simply double the Gypsum Wall Board. Quiet Rock is about $125 per sheet. You can install eight sheets of regular GWB for the price of one Quiet Rock. Double the GWB and get the same STC rating. It's much cheaper!

    Which Is Better for Sound Reduction? QuietRock or Double Drywall? QuietRock can improve the soundproofing by 15 to 20 points on the STC scale, while it will take up to four sheets of drywall to have the same effect. If you’re doing both sides of a partition wall, that’s 2 sheets of QuietRock for 8 of the gypsum. QuietRock is a sound damping product that has a viscoelastic material sandwiched between two gypsum layers. The gypsum has the mass to block soundwaves, and the viscoelastic material damps the wave vibrations. Combined the sheet will reduce the transmission of sound in or out of a room by between 15 and 20 STC points when compared to standard drywall sheets. Foam is messy, non- serviceable, and not as fire retardant amongst other negatives. Use your head, not the manufacture advertising literature.
