Fake Construction Site Stealth Camping

Gear I use available on Amazon - www.amazon.com/shop/stevewallis
Camera gear I use - www.amazon.com/shop/stevewallis
I went stealth camping with Crazy Neighbor in a fake construction site. We set up some scaffolding and put some planks in for bunk beds. The Big Buddy heater provided all the warmth required for a relatively cold night. A wind storm made the camping a little more difficult than expected but not impossible! We had enough traffic cones and caution tape to complete the illusion.

Imagine walking by a construction site with just scaffolding in the middle of a field with a tarp wrapped around it. From the tiny space you hear every tool in the world going off, someone pulling on a roll of duct tape, someone talking loudly, and it smells strongly like hamburgers.

In a way, this did happen to me, several times. I used to cycle tour in Ontario in a self-supported way. Most of my camping was stealth on public land in a way that should cause no harm. Usually, I tried to be up and packed before people were likely to find me (ie dawn). One time, on the southern shore of Lake Ontario (on a road allowance) an early morning Canadian traveller came to watch the sunrise. That person was delighted to find me and offered to share her morning tea and snack as we watched the sunrise over the lake. (I have more stories of getting "caught" stealth camping - all positive)

@@largol33t1 More than one risk. This probably had a greater risk of being caught than most of his ventures. I work on in the project management side of construction. He mentioned this was a job on government property and pipeline related. At least in the US, those kinds of jobs are over-monitored for safety and budget compliance and often planned out to the minute to regulate labor, materials, and limit budget overrun. Off hours, unscheduled work with two men who aren't on my worker's list would be a bigger red flag than a guy in a high viz vest camping in the woods (transient labor is common in construction so that actually happens more commonly than you might think).
