    Yay just got my Fairphone today! It's pure awesomeness :-) After locked down branded devices, having root - yes, root by default O_o - it's a breath of fresh air. They said scheduled power-on was not supported by Android, well here it is. Audio is clear and powerful. Dual sim for always using the most convenient rates. Only downsides it's a little heavy and camera could be better. Had to wait 3 months to get it but it was worth it. Thanks Fairphone

    This phone should also be the worlds most private and secure phone! Add hardware kill switches to prevent unnecessary tracking. Add Calyx OS to make it more private and secure! I really, really want this feature to be added!

    I'm considering making the switch, I'm so sick of Apple. It's just greed and i feel so guilty buying into the consumerism. I barely use my phone anyway so why do I need to pay hundreds of dollars to keep myself updated with a phone made from a multi billion dollar company which pays their workers peanuts. It's not like the phone costs a lot to make. It's just utter crap.

    Why not try keep your old phone? Buying a new one, no matter what phone it is, will just result in more waste and consumption. I've had my iPhone 3gs for over five years and it works great. I went to the junkyard and got a bag full of spare parts. If anything gets broken, i just change that part. There are tons of tutorials on youtube on how to do it. And it is actually kind of fun to fix things on your own!

    It's true, a 2nd-hand phone is more environmental, but unless you buy it from a dealer with a guarantee, you run the risk of it being crappy or something breaking after a month. Also, don't buy this or any other new phone unless you've used your phone for at least 3 years, but the longer you use your current old phone, the greener you are (and of course, bring your old phone to a proper recycler)!

    Okay I am no hater but for all the blind people here: Have you ever heard of the Motorla Moto X? Yes it was for some time made in the US, believe it or not, in 2013/14. Yes a Smartphone with decent specs (way better than the Fairphone) at the same price, made in US. However they stopped and now produce in China once again because the Moto X didn't sell. They tried to produce as much internal parts as possible in the US so it wasn't only the assembly that was done there. Motorola cared, they wanted a product which was once again made outside of China, under different circumstances. And they suffered huge losses because of the expenses and the sadly not so popular Moto X. However they never advertised how "fair" or nice they are. They only stated that it was made in the US, they didn't make a big fuss about being sooo extremley fair. MOTOROLA actually took the FIRST STEP, they tried, they failed, they suffered. MOTOROLA can call its Moto X a FAIRPHONE. They can say that they put SOCIAL VALUES FIRST. Seriously, this Fairphone here is no more than an OVERPRICED phone. How can you tell me that your phone is more expensive than average phones with lower specs (while still made in China) whereas the Motorola, with much better specs made in fucking USA sells at the same price. Are you freaking kidding me? You sound like some underground company founded by Apple, to conquer the remaining part of the population not owning an iPhone. Let me give you some examples: Yes you can remove the battery in the Moto X, it's not as easy but you get the job done in no more than 5 minutes, 5 fucking minutes. In fact the Moto X is almost easier to repair than the Fairphone. You claim that you can replace everything easily, well look it up on ifixit.com, lol. Camera for example is soldered to the mainboard, while in most phones it is attached via a simple wire which is easy to disconnect and reconnect. Don't get me wrong, I really considered buying a Fairphone, only to find me depressed after being almost fooled by marketing tricks once again. You know good ol' Motorola tried, you didn't even bother. You don't try because you know you'd fail just like Motorola did. You know what would be fair? Starting a campaign to not buy smartphones at all. You could have done that if you're so cool and fair. I am not sorry if I hurt someones feelings with this comment because you put (not) so much effort in your (not so) Fairphone and you SERIOUSLY hurt my feelings with your trickery. I almost bought a phone that is overpriced because the money flows into PR and these expensive hipster advertising spots. I can't express how angry I am at this company. "Putting social values first" my ass. Why don't you sit down 12 hours a day and build the phones yourself in the Netherlands instead of sitting on your fat asses and complaining about how hard it is to trace back were certain materials where made. Oh cool that you have located 2 of 30 metals used to build phones. I really miss the time where Nokia Phones were still built in Finland. Wait there is still something missing in this comment: Do you know where my DLSR and lenses were made? In Japan. Do you know where my tripod was made? Italy. Do you know where my microfones were made? Russia/Austria (Yay Austria my homecountry). I try to buy everything I find outside of China, Korea or developing countries. And all these products offer decent prices and really great features. None of these companies claim how fair they are. So how can you claim yourself fair? You would've been more useful if you just used all your funds for the Moto X so that the production would still happen in the US. Go fuck yourself.

    There were discussions on the net about wages in Motorola's company. Yes they really produced in US, believe it or not. Moreover if they would lie about producing in the US, why the heck would they suddenly say "oh sorry it's not rentable to produce in US"? The Moto X can be user-customized via an online shop that's why Motorola thougt it would be easier to handle the production of the Moto X in US. For the Manfrotto tripods simply google: "Manfrotto made in Italy" and you will find many articles. They only produce the lowest budget tripods in china. All others are handmade in italy. As for AKG, they also produce some headphones in china, but all the high quality mics are made in austria. You can look everything up via google. If you argument now with "oh the internet and media falsify information" than I am sorry to inform you that (un)fairphone company does the same. Or did you travel to Kongo and check if the tin and tantalum used to produce fairphone are really from conflict free regions? And did you take a look into the chinese factory where fairphone is built? PS: Don't forget that the CPU is a Mediatek processor, and there are some dicussions about Mediatek being one of the companies that treat their employees especially bad.

  • @Jazz0Vs0Metal

    @Jazz0Vs0Metal

    7 жыл бұрын

    It's not about a specific country, at the time I wrote the comment I read a lot of articles about the Moto X and that is why I used it as an example, because it was another phone. If you read my whole comment and understood it, you would've realized that it's not about the US. I also stated other companies that don't produce in the US or China but elsewhere. Look up Beyerdynamics for example. Almost all their headphones and microphones are handmade in Germany (there are videos on KZread from the inside of the factory and how the assembly works). Of course, you can't blindly trust everything a company says, that's why you'll never know for sure, but this kind of mockery (the fairphone) simply irritates me.

    You clearly have no idea of how to drive change and mainly these two quotations give it away: "However they stopped and now produce in China once again because the Moto X didn't sell." "You know what would be fair? Starting a campaign to not buy smartphones at all."

  • @Jazz0Vs0Metal

    @Jazz0Vs0Metal

    Motorla failed but failure can always happen, especially if you try to change something. Honestly, I just wanted to make an example not patronize Motorla. As for “not buying smartphones at all“, that was a little sarcastic. However I don't think that it's a great idea to make another product on an already saturated market. I don't think that solves any problems. You're great in quoting only my not so great points and ignoring everything else though. I think a fairphone would be a great idea. A company that uses Mediatek CPUs and says it's fair is somewhat irritating though..

    For all those whom I fear have become cynical, yes buying a 2nd-hand phone is greener than buying a new one, but it is still buying within a linear economic system (make, buy, dispose). If this company is sincere with their goals, they plan to close the loop and work within a circular economic system. Check their website. A big question I have right now is, why they are still mining? There are billions of unused phones, I'd think they could get their resources from them? We'll have to see...

You doesn't have to buy such a phone now if you already have one but you can buy it later. The production starts in autumn. The profit that is left goes straightaway in designing new electronics. It is not probable everything green but every idea have to start little. You shouldn't based your knowledge on this simple ad about this phone.

    No, it's the crowd they are pandering to. I would not be a tiny bit surprised if they were just using buzzwords to sell but aren't really doing what they advertise, which is selling actual ethically sourced phones. I'd be willing to bet there are parts of it they just figure "no one will know about" so you buy it thinking you made a difference. The only person who would call hipster a derogatory term is a hipster who doesn't want to be called hipster in a negative tone. Deal with it, hipster.

    I have scanned it's website and cant find anything "fair" about it other than a neat commercial... The idea is good but this company is not that good... Wee all know what is happening with the "fair trade" companys.... Not that fair anymore... As so many befor has said.. By a used one or use your local repairman... Only then will you actually make it fair and also make jobs...

    The hardware is the same as in a 100 dollar chinaphones. Probably it's the same phone as they sell somewhere right now but the assembly is done by slightly less oppressed workers. If you have used any decent smartphone, say made after 2010 this phone is gonna feel shitty you as in terms of buildquality and minor problems overall. And I HIGHLY doubt the morality of the parts as they are the same as in under 100 dollar chinese phones. Buying a used phone is the best choice!
