The hidden impact of the smartphone industry | Fairphone

Ғылым және технология

There is a lot going on behind the shiny veil of innovation and flagship phones. The hidden impact of the smartphone industry can no longer be ignored. Phones are not born in the store, nor do they somehow disappear when you throw them out. So what is really going on behind the scenes and why is it mostly kept under wraps?
Answers in our video above.
______________
Did you know more people have access to a smartphone than a working toilet? The population of mobile devices has exceeded the human population, reaching more than 8 billion. Learn crazy facts about the smartphone industry in this video! Subscribe here: bit.ly/fairphonesubscription
Why don’t more of us recycle our smartphones since there are so many valuable minerals inside?
Well, they are designed for use, but not for reuse or recycling. That’s why it is hard to open them, repair them or remove broken parts. No surprise, this all centers on earning more financial profit and that creates an endless cycle of demanding and consuming more and more.
So please: think twice when you want to buy a new phone. Do you really need a new phone? The truth is: The most sustainable phone, is the one in your pocket - make it last! And if you’re in the market for a new one, Fairphone is your sustainable alternative.
----------------------
Since 2013, Fairphone is on a mission to create a more sustainable and ethical smartphone.
The modular, repairable Fairphone 3 champions longer-lasting design, fair materials, good working conditions, and the reduction of e-waste. We want to help the entire electronics industry to do better.
By creating more sustainable smartphones, we’re demonstrating the endless possibilities for a fairer future, for everyone! It’s no secret, we’re out to change the world. Fairphone puts people and the planet first.
Take a look behind the screen and learn more about the hidden stories you’re holding hand. On this KZread Channel you can check out how-to’s about our Fairphones, tutorials and behind the scenes videos.

It needs to go viral! I can't believe it! It's an eye-opener for the smartphone industry. These hidden impacts are challenging to navigate through. I'm glad Fairphone made ethical practices a priority. Ethical practices first and tech innovations later.

Well a lot of people care to much for design. I mean its a solid black brick (I love it by the way) but there is not a following towards current trends (like triple camera and some of the bullsh*t). Also you don't get a lot bang for the buck this phone isn'zcost efficient and not every one cares unfortunitly for the environment. But I seriously hope that those dutch superheros will bring some more competitive fair products in the near future!

Hi, thank you for this video. Nevertheless the main reason most smartphones are disposed of is the obsolescence of their system : they get to slow as apps and operating systems updates demand increasing intern storage and processor performance : How do you plan to bypass this tremendous issue ?? Google and apple systems have gained so much popularity/monopoly among users and developpers that dropping android is impossible (windows phones failed for instance). I also wonder what is your business model : the fairphone's cost is average, but the goal of a loyal customer (to fairphone) is to keep it as long as possible (let's say 10 years). So you make drastically less profit than other companies whose phones last 2 years (and so sells 5 times more phones to their loyal customer). How can the fairphone be so affordable, and your company still make profits ?!

Regarding system, look at the life of Fairphone 2 for a hint. It's still receiving Android updates later than any other brand, and it has an active base of users supporting alternative operating systems such as open source versions of Android and Ubuntu Touch. Fairphone 3 can already run alternatives to Android such as /e/ and Ubuntu Touch, meaning that it's in good hands even if Android should start requiring futuristic hardware. :)

I know I’m late but I’ve heard that Fairphone is working with Qualcomm to come out with a phone capable of hot swapping the CPU. Theoretically, it could allow a phone that would normally last 10+ years to go on for 15 or 20+ years. I have no info on their progress or whether they’re even working on it still. But as someone who is using an 8 year old iPhone SE, I’d *love* to have a phone that could last 20 years!

I think if you guys can make a phone with a camera as good as the competition, you'll get more adopters, is it a software or a hardware problem ? if it's a software problem you should think about opensourcing your camera app, and get more help from the opensource community.

  • @ThomasParis

I wholeheartedly agree with the message. Heck, I've been supporting you since your very first phone and still tell people around me how great you are. But I don't like the negative tone of this video, which, in my experience, tends to be a turn off for the people you want to convince. Then again, I'm no marketing expert and I might be completely wrong. But this is not the video of yours I'll be sharing. Even though I do agree with the message. Oh well... Thanks for all your efforts! I do appreciate them.

@@Fairphone And that transparency and openness are exactly what I love about Fairphone. And something I try and mention every time I talk about you. All I was saying was as a long time free and open source software user (I moved my computers to linux last century...), my experience tells me people don't want to hear the bad news. And I do wish they would listen. But I gave up. I still only use linux on my own computers but I don't try and explain why others should consider making the same choice. That candle burned out years ago. I haven't given up on explaining Fairphone yet, though. It will probably take another couple of years before I've expended all THAT energy. So, here's to a beautiful 2021, when people start realising they can make this a better world. And I guess that's what I meant in my original comment: I was to emphasise the good we can make, not the wrong we didn't stop making. I'm not going to lie: we did a lot of bad stuff and will keep on doing some. I'm not going to try and hide that truth. I just want to help people see it's possible to do something good (instead). Anyway, huge thanks to the Fairphone team for all you do!

And PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD make it modular with phisical switches to turn on and off the camera and microphone then also make the ssd (I dont think hd is needed) easy to replace I personally like to switch between win and linux! And one other question is ther3 going to be mhl support for my pf3? I really would like to usemy monitor sometimes to display my screen!

It's still a very expensive phone. I really love fairphone, it's a functional and honest phone, however there are other phones half the price that have more Ram and power. I would consider buying it with a better price, or adding 6 Gb of RAM and better processor instead.

When I recommend the Fairphone to people I always use price as an argument why they should buy it. They are always considering a new phone because something (screen/camera/charging port/battery) is broken, and I show them the price of the module to fix this on the Fairphone. Sure, the first investment is a bit higher, but the second you need to fix something it becomes relatively cheaper. :)
