FACE DRAWING: How To Get Started
Want to know how to start your face drawings out in the right way?
In this video I’ll show you how to build a stellar foundation for your portrait drawings and how to avoid the mistake most people make if they’re lacking classical training.
No more wonky features or flat looking faces. This step by step drawing tutorial will help you get realistic looking results.
Assignment: Grab a couple of head shot images (be sure not to use selfies or poorly lit images) and draw them in the simplified manner I demonstrated. See if you can distill out the eye socket, nose box and dental mound for various angles.

Oh great! I'm glad it was useful. In the previous video I talked about proportions a little bit, which may help you with the eyes, too.
Thanks again Carolinfor another very useful video.

Excellent Richard! That's music to my ears. Tag me in your practice pictures if you every post them on Instagram, so I can give you a virtual high five
OMG!!! I've been watching youtube art videos for about 4 years now and never came across your channel! You are an amazing teacher! Will def look at your class more closely! The first time I felt enthusiastic watching videos on how to draw faces. Not sure what it was, if you've had some vocal training or smtg similar, but your voice doesn't make me fall asleep and your analogies for explaining the things are awesome!

@@CarolinPeters well, at the moment mainly a hobby, but hopefully I want to get good enough at it to work on commissions after I retire from my current job. Still far far away from happening, but would love to get really good at drawing! And still investigating mediums such as coloured pencils, panpastels, watercolours, pen & ink, etc. Anything really. I need to take a good course. I am a good student, but I feel like developing my art skills might require some tutoring... I had a look at the website and there are no spots available. I entered the waitlist, so let's see! Tks for the content!

You're so welcome. Let me know if you have any drawing questions for me.
Thank you so much! This was soo helpfull! 😄💙 By the way.. should I practice this method drawing from photos or real life (self portraits etc.). In January 2022 I will be doing entrance art exams in art school. There will be a portrait from a life model and figure composition painting from imagination..

Hey there, I'm so happy this was useful for you! It really doesn't matter too much if you draw from life or photo for the structural practice drawings. The important part is that you use good reference images, though. Don't use images with weak/indirect lighting, don't use selfie-style images (because the way we usually hold the phone for selfies makes the camera distort the face), don't use images of people smiling/laughing/etc. A neutral face with a nice 3/4 direct light source is perfect. If you have someone willing to sit for you, that's great, too. But often they expect to see the drawing and that opens a whole other can of worms, especially if you're still just practicing. Let me know if you have any more questions about this :) Good luck with your entrance exams!!!
So good

Whoops, sorry, just seeing this now. Materials I used in this video: -smooth Newsprint paper -Wolff's Carbon pencil 2B (carbon pencils are a bit less powdery than charcoal. I love their buttery feeling against the smooth newsprint)
Carolinfor? Sorry about that.
