How i use pen and ink when drawing portraits (get prepped for inktober 2021)

Need some help with how to use pen and ink when drawing portraits?
I’ll show you 2 different ways for how to create portrait ink sketches using pen and ink techniques. During this pen portrait tutorial you’ll see time-lapse videos of how I go about drawing a classical dip pen portrait using hatching, and a scribble drawing portrait using a ballpoint pen.
Even though I don’t follow Inktober by the book, I do love using October to get back into my pen and ink sketching habit.
I hope that this pen and ink drawing lesson will prepare you with two different ways to keep your drawing practice fresh.
Tools used in this video: Smooth Strathmore Bristol Paper, HB graphite pencil, pen holder with Nikko or Zebra G-Nib, Walnut Darkening Medium (as ink), Bic ballpoint pen
I recommend www.jetpens.com to shop for pen & ink tools (I’m not an affiliate)

Wow! Your classical training makes a huge difference for me. Largely, because youre profoundly articulate and consistent. Unlike so many other sites that have caused confusion and headaches from my experience.

I have to say that I loved the Bic pen version! I really need to spend more time experimenting, this was a really good guide on trying to do that. 😆

Yes, experimenting will help you find little treasures ( not always, but it's worth the risk)!

Thanks so much for watching! And now I'm curious, are you more into the old-school version or the less classical Bic pen version? Let me know!

Nice work. How do you get all your angles right in your drawings?

Thank you! I take my time plotting out my underdrawing with graphite first, and the key there is to work from the big outer angles to the gradually smaller ones. Angles and proportions are all about how you control your eyes when you draw and not letting them get zoomed in too soon. Staying zoomed out to see all the relationships well is the real discipline. What do you like to draw?

I wanted to ask.. do you recommend drawing in sketchbook or on separate papers? I filled over 20 sketchbooks in one year 😂. I'm drawing all the time and I really want to improve. PS: I really love your videos so much!! I learned so many things, please keep going!! 😊😃💫

Hi there, I'm so glad my videos are helpful for you. It depends on what your drawings are for. If you want to draw in a small format just for practice or to play with ideas, sketchbooks are perfect. If you're hoping to make a "finished drawing" that's supposed to get framed, or if you want to work on a larger scale, working on a drawing pad may be better. Great question, let me know if you want more clarification 😊

Grumbacher Mixed Media sketchbooks are perfect! The unique thing about them is that you can take the paper out to work on it and pop it back in, because of the way they're made. They're also perfect for ink (I heavily saturate mine) and are on the cheaper side. Highly recommend.

Why the distracting music? I would like to concentrate on your technique and instruction? It seems every content creatior thinks - because KZread suggests this - they need to add music, as if we can't listen to anything without a beat below it. It's just noise pollution (didn't we all hate it in the mall?), doesn't add anything and makes learning specifically difficult for those who are auditory learners (33%), like myself, those with hearing impairment and those with misophonia. That's a good chunk of the population.
