Fight perfectionism in your drawing

Do you feel bogged down in your drawing practice? If you’re struggling with a lack of inspiration, with perfectionist expectations for your work and a resulting death grip on your pencil, then watch this video.
In it I go over three main reasons for how perfectionism can get in your way of growing as an artist and I’ll show you a fun exercise to break the cycle and move forward again.
Materials I use in this video: Zebra WF150 nylon tip brush pen on Strathmore Sketch paper

these kinds of videos are important for the balance of internet artistic content. too much of the rigid and strict message isnt fun. and if art isnt fun it burns out.

Glad you think so, too! For me, when we loose the joy in drawing it's not worth it. Doesn't mean we still can't strive for excellence, but it's a both-and situation 😄

Thanks for watching! I'm curious, do you struggle with wanting to maintain a deathgrip on your pencil to overly control your drawing? What has helped you to loosen up?

Yeah, I always pressed hard both writing and drawing. Fountain pens helped with the writing, I stopped getting writing cramps. For drawing, it was really the monkey grip that helped; using the side of a tapered point, making tone and working on line quality. Also trying to erase deep, dark charcoal and pastel marks gives you a great incentive to loosen up a little. :)

I am autistic and being rigid/repetitive is so inherent to pretty much everything I do/have ever been that it's hard for me to even imagine escaping it. That said, most of my favorite artists create work that looks super messy and free and loose (while somehow seeming confident/consistent w/characters, etc.). It's a struggle: P

Thanks for sharing this! I can imagine that being neurodivergent adds a whole other layer to drawing. I'd be curious to hear how other artists on the spectrum stay connected to fooling around with their art while maintaining also a focused practice.

@@CarolinPeters I am curious as well. The only visual artist I can think of right off the bat who I am 100% certain was autistic is Warhol, and his strategies for fooling around with his art led him away from drawing pretty quickly once he got established. Everything in me pulls toward formal/conceptual, and/or obsessively fussy/overworked, but that's generally the stuff I like to look at the least: P Love Warhol's shoes and cats drawings though. I'd be happy with that! Ha ha.

Hi Carolin, another great video as usual. My issue is getting up to speed with basics enough to even be able to loosen up and experiment. The other problem is confusion over a learning path. For example, right now deciding whether to follow Loomis, Bridgman, or Reilly is an issue? Any advice regarding these three? Thanks.

  • @CarolinPeters

I see. Yes, that's really the most common huddle in the beginning. Int glad you've identified it for yourself. Any of the three methods is fine. One isn't better than the other as they all lead to good results. However, I'd favor Loomis and Reilly as there's more accessible info out there on them. Bridgman can be a bit tricky to decipher if you're not sure what you're looking at. Have you watched my masterclass? It'll give you a good understanding of how to structure your practice.

I love Bridgman sooooooooo much. His writing/instruction is super tough to make sense of, but his drawings are so wonderful. Marshall Vandruff has an outstanding series here on Bridgman that makes his teachings gloriously clear. In my opinion, Bridgman is the best of those three if you really want to focus on form. Loomis is great for a gazillion practical drawing tips, perspective, making a bunch of lines actually look like something, etc. ha ha. Reilly I cannot grasp/retain, but it seems like the one to follow if you prize gestural flow more than anything else.

Hello Carolin ne again, well been drawing my whole life and I really want to take the thing I love seriously finally, but unfortunately I feel static, like Im stuck in a loop. Best way I can put it in words is, I feel like I have some fundation and now when I am trying to build on that fundation it is falling apart every time I add something to it and Im constantly stuck fixing it, therefore not moving anywhere. I could write you a email in more details and send some of my most recent drawings if youd like to. I really feel stuck and when i try to study i dont understand how or what to study about let say anatomy. I get the basics and I do understand it, but when it comes to using it in practice its like a gamble sometimes you win but mist often you dont. I would really appriciate any advice you have. Thank you!
