The fact that this channel has 12k subs is a damn shame. This is seriously one of the best automotive KZread channels out there. You guys are well educated and very knowledgeable. It's refreshing to see people that care about quality. Both in content and part selection. I get excited ever time I see your videos popup in my subscription list.

When I swapped the motor back into my car, I did it slightly differently. I placed the load balancer in the longitudinal direction, rather than the laterally like you guys did it. This let me angle the engine to the same orientation as the transmission. When sliding the motor in, I rotated the crank slightly via a socket on the crank pulley. This let the splines on the input shaft line up and slide in way easier. This way, I was able to get the engine and trans all the way together before threading in any bolts. I also used the factory manual recommended lift points: The ring on the passenger rear by the harness connectors, and the large threaded hole under the throttle body. Lifting the motor by the plastic intake makes me cringe a little. It looks like it worked out fine for you guys. But it wouldn't be my first choice.

I went to Ace Hardware and got a bolt that fit. I think it was the largest metric fine-pitch they had (It was an M14, I believe)! I threaded it through a length of chain that I bought there too. Also the largest they had.
The content you guys are producing is so damn good! Top 3 Automative channel easily on KZread. So informative, technical and helpful. I'm loving the track focus with the channel and intend on building my own BRZ track car in the future and am definitely keeping some tips I have learnt here. Keep it up, really appreciate your work.

nice video... whats the deal with the Datsun in the back?
I wonder if FA20 out of the 2017 FRS will go into a 2013 FRS as Direct Fit?

I have a question on engine swapping like this. I have my frs tuned already and the engine blew if i swap the engine do i need to unmarry my frs to the oft and then marry and then retune the car since its a new engine?

i got a question, the fa20 engines fails with the rocker arms, do you have any advice to solve this problem. can you get a stronger rocker arm ?
Why does having an intercooler force the oil cooler to be taken out? Can't you have both?

7:13 that's a bad habit to get into to re-use oil filters like that. That filter seal is normally one time use and re-using it like that can cause oil to leak from it. Just my .02.

@speedacademy
9 жыл бұрын
shihster88 we compression checked the original motor and it was down near the bottom end of the OE range for acceptable (as outlined in the shop manual), plus we knew from dyno testing it we were down about 10whp compared to most other FA20s we've dyno'd. And the motor took a beating at Targa Newfoundland and had a turbo and NOS on it when VCMC used it for the Scion Tuner Challenge, so all in all the motor didn't own us anything. We'd like to rebuild it over the winter with some forged internals and chuck a bunch more boost at it next year. As for Valvoline, their a partner of ours on our website, but what impresses us most is their willingness to share technical data with us and anyone else who signs up for the TeamValvoline program, plus they've had tremendous success in motorsports so we know their oils are engineered to the highest level. If you jump on TeamValvoline.com and check out the fact/tech sheets on Pro-V oils, you'll see what I mean. Tons of very good info there. We just got a bucket of Pro-V racing oil in a 0w30 that we'll be running in the FR-S for Ontario1500.
Where did you guys buy the engine ??
Can I buy the original motor if it doesn't have a rod knock @speed academy???

The RX7 of the back !!!!!!!!
Wow that bmw has been kicking around a while. 2015: 2jz bmw! 2018: winter storage of stock bmw
Can you swap a 2016 motor into a 2013 brz frs?
Nice video. I can't help but noticing the FD and 240z in the background. The 240z was a great car back when I was in college, but rust got the best of it. I've owned an FD for a little over 20 years now (original owner here). Damn, it's getting close to becoming a classic. :eek:
@speedacademy
9 жыл бұрын
tscooter22 There will soon be a video on the FD as we've got some cool stuff we're working on with it. And kudos to you for owning the car for that long, RX7 owners seem to flip them alot since they either blow the engines or can't afford/ don't want to properly maintain them.
@tscooter22
9 жыл бұрын
Yep, regarding other FD owners, that sums it up perfectly. It's a shame, 'cause they probably get them cheap, hack and beat the shit out of them and dispose of them just like any other expendable. Seem like no-one wants to take care of things anymore. It's like we've transitioned into a disposable world.
@speedacademy
9 жыл бұрын
tscooter22 Walk through any department store and I have a feeling you'll understand why. Our entire world is built around disposable, cheap, items. Hold onto that FD, it'll be one of the few good ones left in 10 years time.

@speedacademy
9 жыл бұрын
jorges2000 Ha! And here we thought we always make things look difficult. The Z will be featured in a video VERY soon.
ok i'm a little unpleased. there are a few things missing in this video that needs to be stated for the average joe pulling the motor out. there are guide bolts at the bottom (2) that you have to be careful with. jiggling the motor, prying and what not will bend these bolts. another part is the ac compressor. when pulling it out, it will get tight with it and you need to be careful of puncturing a hole in it or worse. freon is not friendly. slow and steady, use logic and angles to your advantage. just my two cents. big fan btw haha
Is it just as hard with the automatic trans. taking the engine out ?
@speedacademy
7 жыл бұрын
We wouldnt say its hard but the procedure is pretty much the same.
I have a 2013 frs and it takes 0w20 oil and you guys put in 5w20???
@speedacademy
8 жыл бұрын
+carlos vela actually, we ran Valvoline Pro-V race oil 5w30 in this engine for the Ontario-1500. Based on how quickly we saw the 20 weight breaking down from high heat conditions at the track, we felt a 30 weight would give us a bit of added protection and based on how good the oil looked during and after a week straight of racing at the Ontario-1500 it appeared to be a good choice. But for a regular street driven FR-S that doesn't see extended track use, 0w20 is probably the way to go. Just make sure to use a high quality synthetic oil if you're taking your car to the track, because it can take the heat much better than a non-synthetic oil can.
Hey guys, have you considered the FA20F engine swap? It is the same motor but Subaru developed it with a turbo, I think that would be a cool way to get a turbo FRS. Let me know if you think it could work!
would the gearbox from that car fit on d 2jz? or a supra gearbox is needed?
@speedacademy
8 жыл бұрын
Nope, you need a Supra gearbox or an adapter to fit something else. The FRS trans would never handle the power of a 2JZ
I wanna see a porsche flat 6 in an 86 it keeps the boxer sympathy and boxsters and caymans are same configuration but right behind you I'd use the porsche manual box to Porsche gear change is worth the work. I got the a 2016 aero if your up for this and have an interest in a similar build let's make the first one...
hey guys! I have a frs and like all frs owners I want more HP ! I was thinking about the fa20dit that the wrx has ?! would it fit in my car? is the wrx and frs using same harness ? thank you
@speedacademy

probably the last person to mention it but i believe the oil is 0w20 for the fa20. but any oil beats no oil.
After you do engine swap the car will have more top speed so my question is how to know what the new top speed and how to replace the speed gauge with the gauge that has the same top speed?
@speedacademy
9 жыл бұрын
Muammarvsgaming ROBLOX and more We swapped the engine for the same one so our top speed wont change but if we put a different, more powerful engine in then even with the increased top speed the speedometer in the car reads to 240km/k which would be very hard to hit so keeping the same gauge would not be an issue.

shouldnt you run "racing" oil when you tune an engine? my sr20 has about 300hp and i was recommended 10w-60?
@speedacademy
9 жыл бұрын
i am Viking 10w-60?! That's a crazy heavy weighted oil. We run the manufacturer recommended oil weight and use a synthetic for superior protection. If your engine is internally stock then the clearances are set for the recommended oil weight and that's why we really never mess around with different weights.
@MistRVertexZ
9 жыл бұрын
Speed Academy hmmm.. but would it hurt my engine to run 10w-60? i already bought 4-5 litres (little over 1 gallon) and i really don have money for new oil... :p
@speedacademy
9 жыл бұрын
i am Viking I've never run 60 weight oil so I don't know if it'll hurt your engine. Are you using your car at the track only? Or doing a good amount of street driving? At the track a thicker oil isnt bad for more protection since it will heat up quite a bit so you should be fine. You should read this story: speed.academy/team-valvoline-pro-v-oil/ There is a lot of Valvoline based content but Dave talks about oil weights and how to choose the right one.
Anything done to the internals of the new FA20 or was it just swapped because it has less miles?
@speedacademydave
9 жыл бұрын
Ethanmeister just swapped in because the original engine in the car has led a very hard life including Targa Newfoundland last year and a bunch of racing the previous year in the hands of the VCMC dudes out in BC. We felt for Ontario1500 it was a good idea to drop a fresher engine in that presumably hasn't seen any race miles (bought it from a wrecker with about 30k km on it).

@speedacademy

Scott M. The old engine had a really hard life with nitrous and turbocharging so this way we ensure we have a less-stressed engine to run the Ontario1500 event with.
what about a Ls swap into a 9c1 police Caprice or brz 🤔🤔
if I'm not mistaken, the FR-S was powered by the Toyota 4U-GSE... and the FA20 is a subaru engine. please correct me if I'm wrong.
@speedacademy
9 жыл бұрын
BRIKKgoesHAM Dave and I have actually talked about this since you are correct, Toyota calls the engine a 4U-GSE but it's just a name since Subaru builds the engines and when we started filming this series we always referred to it as a FA20 so we've stuck with it to avoid confusion.
