F800GS Service E4-1: Rear Wheel part 1, servicing the sprocket carrier.

In this episode of the BMW F800GS Service series, I remove the rear wheel, clean it all up, and proceed to service the sprocket carrier by examining and replacing the bearing and seal, plus I install a new rear sprocket with new bolts.

    Great video! Thanks for taking the time to put it together. One question though, I've seen guys put a thin layer of grease around the bearing casing to making it easier to fit into the hub. I see you used a heat gun instead to expand the metal. Is using the grease option a good idea or not?

    Thanks! I don't think a bit of grease is a bad thing. The bearing is a very snug fit, and I don't think the grease would cause the outer bearing shell to rotate, in fact, I use grease on the axles so they come out easily.

    I did a bearing replacement today for a KTM that desperately needed it. I put the bearings in a freezer overnight and heat the housing to ensure an easier time fitting. Just make sure to put the bearings in a zip lock bag to keep moisture from getting to them.

    Have you ever found a sealed bearing not to have grease in it?

    No, all bearings I've opened have had some grease in them. Some have had very little, and some of the grease have been of questionable quality. However, I'm no expert so do your own research. Also, don't pack the grease too tight, it needs space to expand when the bearing gets hot.

    Hi! I think it was 57,000 miles - please check the first video in the series. I don’t know if it was the original bearing or if it had been changed before. This bike was a very early F800GS, so I think it was a 2008...? Again, the first video might have the details. It’s been a while since I worked on that bike. My bike is a late 2009, Crazy Caz’s bike is an early 2009. Thanks for watchin’! 😎👍🏻

    After how many miles do you recommend this service? I mostly drive on pavement with a few miles on gravel and forest roads

    If you remove your wheels every year and check the bearings, seals and bushes I think you should be OK. If you are in very dusty conditions along with water, mud, etc, then more often. If you're in good conditions; tarmac, garaged bike, only dry rides, etc, then it could even work as seldom as when you change the tyres. If you change to the stainless steel spacers, then I think you don't need to worry very much at all.

    Olá! Se você estiver solicitando valores de torque e outras especificações, poderá encontrá-los em um manual de oficina. Os valores podem diferir de bicicleta para bicicleta, portanto, não quero que você use as configurações incorretas e quebre sua motocicleta. Obrigado por assistir!

    Thank you! Glad they've been useful. I'd check the wheel bearings quite often, as they don't tend to last very long. It shouldn't take you very long to take the wheels off and check the bearings, seals and the condition of the spacers. I recommend getting the Stainless Steel spacers by the way.     With the F800GS, there are two different sized sprocket nuts depending on the year model that you have. I don't want to provide incorrect information , so the best advice I can give is to take a look in the workshop manual amzn.to/2HIuRNZ (affiliate link)
