EXTREMELY Rare Pickaxe Restoration - GROUND FOUND from WWII

Restoration of a rare broken trench pickaxe who was left behind in Bastogne, Belgium by the US Army during the battle of Bastogne in World War 2 - 1944. See me restore this war relic and make it beautiful and functional again.
ABOUT THE BROKEN WW2 PICKAXE
This pickaxe is a war relic from the World War 2 Battle of Bastogne in Belgium. Where the Allies and Axis fought as a part of the larger Battle of the Bulge. This is a Mattock Plumb from 1942, the model the allied forces among others used on the battlefield in Europe.
I am very sure of the origin of this pickaxe as I have been to Belgium and picked it up with a lot of other WW2 relics. I bought a larger batch of relics who has been hidden for 75 years.
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I started by gentle cleaning the top of the pickaxe where I suspected there could be some marking to identify its origin. I found the U.S. PLUMB 1942 markings under all the rust and dust. I sandblasted the pickaxe and welded the two parts together. I did a lot of grinding and polishing and choosed a very beautiful smoked us oak for the handle.
This is such a beautiful war relic and I hope that you enjoy this restoration video. Please subscribe if you want to see more cool upcoming projects 🙂 And DON’T FORGET TO SEE my RARE WW2 LIGHTER RESTORATION - • EXTREMELY Rare Lighter...

Martin, another truly beautiful restoration. The 101st Airborne was holding a bridge in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. They had 341 men killed, almost 1700 injured and over 500 missing after the battle and were known as the Battered Bastards of Bastogne, they held the bridge and they got relief finally from General Patton's 3rd Army. The 101st are based at Fort Campbell here in the town where I live, Clarksville, Tennessee. You and yours stay healthy and safe Martin and Cheers'💖 👍😷🍻✌

As soon as I saw the "101" on the tool, and knowing that it was discovered at Bastogne, I thought of the drama-doc series "Band of Brothers". Standard engineer hand tool. They haven’t changed since 1979 through 2019 when I retired. It could be from the 101st airborne, but probably would’ve been mounted on a commanders jeep along with a shovel, but I believe it’s more likely a belonging of the 101st Engineer Battalion. I spent nine years with them from 83-92 and that was a common mark on all of our tools from the pioneer boxes. The pick mattock, long handle and short or “D”handle shovels and also the augers we’d use to place demolition under the ground or bury posts with for obstacles. Nice to see a relic get a new lease on life. I can imagine it’s probably seen it’s share of combat helping a Joe get low into a hole. Some tours back then just never ended... Nice work!

The 101 could refer to the 101st Airborne Division, which took part in the D-Day invasion, so wouldn't be out of place in Bastogne. Edit: A quick summary of the discussion and having done a bit of research. Even though the 101st were indeed stationed at Bastogne during WW2, it's probably just a coincidence because of the following: 1) These markings are not unit identifiers it would say "101st" if it were. Further it would probably be down further to the company or even platoon level. 2) These type of items did not have unit ids to prevent captured ones from being used to aid the enemy intelligence. 3) This particular entrenching tool does not match the pattern issued, as standard, to the airborne forces, which was more like a spade and foldable. 4) This pattern was more likely to be issued to an Army or Artillery unit as they did much more substantial defensive earth works, so required heavier tools.

The videos a wonderful mix of artistry, industrial education, and history. The way the video comes together with the music is such an emotional journey, and I enjoy every second. I love how you added the soldier scene in the blast booth (the start of the journey) at 1:14 and when welding you added the soldier kneeling by the cross at 5:32 (a journey's end marked by heat and explosions). The final scene of pairing the pickaxe with the 101st Airborne helmet a very fitting and noble ending. Oh, and I love the restoration.

I’m totally in awe. Tears are quite close though. My stepfather was a F.E.P.O.W. held in a camp of 100 always had 100 p.o.w’s. They were held on a small island, hardly any food just meagre rations. He was in charge of the furnace, break the legs before putting them in it. There was an opportunity for a few of F.E.P.O.W s to fly to Japan to inform the younger people the “missing parts” of information that was withheld in Japanese history. They never knew of my the Camp my stepfather was in. It was very quickly put together and he took them all there. Straight to the area where the camp was. Still bones in the man made furnace. They had to hack thru the bamboo ahead of all of the people but it showed everyone that there were still things they never knew. My daughter also went to Japan, flown 1st Class, as my parents had been too. It’s unreal how much information is still unknown but it is. Thank you for all you do in repairing with such love items that were once lost and broken.

I didn’t get the chance to hear all of my grandfather’s war stories, but he gave me a Screaming Eagles patch when I was a kid. Seeing this restoration really hit me in the feels.

I'm sure your grandfather could tell some stories, probably also some very sad stories - much respect for those who fought in the war to protect others

@@AwesomeRestorations I've got a few recorded. One of those being about how General Patton was a jerk, to put it lightly. Some were quite grim, including the one that went with the Lieutenant bar pin that he also gave me with the patch.

That looks beautiful. Congratulations on a wonderful job. Also, congratulations on some of your special effects. The clip inside the sandblaster and the one at 6:32 were brilliant. Your little friend under the bench was pretty special as well. The work with the spoke-shave was amazing. That is almost a lost art, so it's nice to see someone still maintaining a traditional skill.
