Rare Lighter Restoration from World War II

Restoration of an EXTREMLY RARE lighter from World War II Battle of Bulge 1944. This was found near Bastogne and got a very special badge attached to it. This is the Holy Grail of war relics that I have restored. and yes I will make this relic VERY beautiful again.
ABOUT THE RARE LIGHTER
This is a very special war relic from the Battle of Bulge World War 2 in 1944-1945. I have bought it from a family who lives near Bastogne where the Battle of Bulge took place. I got this old lighter and many other cool relics with me home including a Medicine bag a helmet and the famous whiskey hip flask that I already have restored - See the video here: • EXTREMELY Rare Whisky ... .
You can still go certain places in Europe and do some very cool World War 1 and World War 2 founds with and without metal detecting gear. There were millions of tons of military garbage and rare items left behind to be found.
This item was found in the late 60’s early 70’s and brought to a barn where it has been contained together with a lot of other WW2 metal garbage, uniforms, helmets and other rusted materials. I was lucky to be able to buy a whole lot of relics from this family.
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I was very curious about the badge who was attached to the lighter so I started cleaning this. When brushed off there was wings with a big A and some snakes and a needle maybe as old as World War I but I am not 100% sure. I have been told now by some of my subscribers from the US that it’s a WWII US Army Officer Ambulance Corps Medical Department Collar Insignia badge.
I heated the lighter to remove the Ambulance Corps Medical badge which were soldered to the lighter and there after I removed all screws. They were hard to remove I had to use force and some flames to get things apart.
I sandblasted the lighter using a mix of glass beads and baking soda and after the sandblasting I grinded the lighter with 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit. I polished it blank and added all the small parts again. I equipped it with a new cap for the wick since the old one seems to be missing. I used my metal lathe and I used brass to match the material used on the rest of this war relic. I also added new wick, cotton and a new flint spring to ensure that it will lit.
The beautiful Ambulance Corps Medical badge was cleaned in vinegar and 40% alcohol before it was attached to the lighter again.
I hope that you enjoy this restoration video as much as I did. Please subscribe if you want to see more cool upcoming projects 🙂 And DON’T FORGET TO SEE my RARE Whisky Hip flask Restoration - • EXTREMELY Rare Whisky ... - This come from the same batch as this cigarette lighter.
Thanks for watching my channel. See you soon.
Best wishes and stay safe ❤ Martin

I have often wondered how you get/find your items to restore. Do people send you things to restore for them? Do you search for things where you live? As always may friend, thank you for a wonderful restoration of this historic piece! ❤

From 1974 and back the soldiers got mre 24 hour combat. Inside whas a package of 5 sigarettes. most likely they smoked these sigarettes. Also there raincoats where half tents made of canvas. And they used turpentine and beeswax to waterproof there canvas so they would've need a lighter to warm up this solution. And they needed too cook there meal and there coffee. Every soldier had matches but they wanted a lighter instead. They would've used wasbenzine or gas for there lighters back in those days. Hope this helps. Greetings,, Kitty.

I’m not saying it wouldn’t be difficult as Johnson is the 2nd most common family name in the US (as mustard guy points out 👍).. per census data, 3500 or so of the 500k US troops involved in the battle of the bulge should be named Johnson. I believe that’s the insignia of an officer in the ambulance corps, so if you take it at face value then there shouldn’t be too many M. Johnson’s to track down. AR- great job on the restoration, it’s a beauty.

My father was a postal investigator for the US Army during WWII, and spent most of the war in Europe. A German officer surrendered -- along with several of his enlisted men -- and Dad (who was a major) made sure they were treated respectfully until they could be sent to a POW camp. The officer gave him a chrome luger automatic (I think it belonged to a Nazi officer and had been traded to the army officer) in thanks for Dad's help. I'm sure there was a lot more to the story; my father told us very little about his wartime experiences, but he cherished his souvenirs from the four years he served. Thank you for the respect you gave the lighter and the soldier who carried it. As Mark Knopfler wrote in one of his greatest songs, we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms.

The caduceus is the staff carried by Hermes in Greek mythology and consequently by Hermes Trismegistus in Greco-Egyptian mythology. The same staff was also borne by heralds in general, for example by Iris, the messenger of Hera. It is a short staff entwined by two serpents, sometimes surmounted by wings

  • @tristanflynn4014

That is the staff of Hermes, called a Caduceus. The American Military chose that symbol for their medical wing, not really knowing what it actually represented. It's actually a symbol of thieves and gamblers, amongst other things. The Rod of Asclepius is a single staff, with a single snake coiled around it. That is a true symbol of healing and medicine. It is used in most professional medicine areas as a symbol. The Caduceus is used mostly in private and corporate ones as it is a cool looking symbol.

Actually i think based on how consistent every item he restores looks it's dramatically more likely he's faking the rust etc using chemicals. It's convenient how many items that are HIGHLY corroded seem to have almost no corrosion damage once he cleans them, almost like he just dunks them in a solution for a week or two. Fine detail does not survive 3mm of accumulated corrosion or the conditions required to get it there.

That symbol (Badge) on the lighter is an EARLY WW II ARMY AIR CORP. MEDICAL CADUCEUS. The "A" Symbol denotes it as being from the Administration Branch. The "A" would have been filled in with a color of Brown. It was probably an Officers Lighter. My Father was in the 101st Airborne and jumped in during D-Day. He was one of the soldiers who were depicted in "Band of Brothers". And he had a similar Zippo Lighter...but his had the "Screaming Eagles" Symbol on the front. - - Andy, you are a MASTER at Restorations! - -

I absolutely love the history ones; such a beautiful craftsman. Edit1; The insignia is the Staff of Hermes(Mercury), or The Caduceus, It has different meanings, depending how you go about it, but the symbol originated when Mercury tried to stop two serpents from fighting, the Staff was thrown and they intertwined. The "A" is for Army and given the lighter, medic.

Btw I like how you add some details that we see in your video when you want to get a Lighter to heat that old Light We all see a toy soldier with a medic helmet in your tool cupboard. and when you sandblasted the lighter, we saw the face of a medic soldier there, and of course at the end of the video you showed the toy soldier we meant.... M. Johnson must be happy that you found and repaired his favorite lighter.

it is an insignia of Medical Administrative Corps, established in 1917. The Officers of the Medical Administrative Corps helped conduct the work of the Medical Department at the larger Hospitals and Headquarters, where they performed administrative duties. They consisted largely of WW1 Officers with administrative experience who had continued serving in the Reserves after the war.
