Restoration of a DEAD locked Pipe Vise - Beautiful outcome

Restoration of a dead locked Pipe Vise with really beautiful outcome. This tool is really stucked and unusable but ends up beautifully restored and maybe better than new.
I bought this Pipe Vise in a local flea market here in Sweden. I don’t know how old it is. There is a sticker on it saying Peddinghouse - I think that Ridgid owns that brand. On the front of the vise it says PIONIER and on the top of the handle nut there is the number 2 - This might stand for fits 2” pipes?
The vise was really stuck in many parts when I start working on it. But WD40, fire and strong arms is king when it comes to loosen old rusty bolts and nuts.
I use sandblasting to remove all old paint and rust from all the parts. I have loaded the sandblaster with medium hard sand to achieve perfect results when sandblasting on cast iron. I also made two custom bolts and I polished them into mirror blank. They hold the main parts together. I also create a custom pin on my lathe to attach the hook on the main body of the vise. I use stainless steel screws to attach the hard metal jaws to the vise and brass screws to attach the moving metal jaw to the moving thread.
Please like and comment the video and tell me what you think. That will mean a lot to me!
Please subscribe if you want to see more cool upcoming restoration projects 🙂 Please also see the restoration of my 18" inch Bahco adjustable wrench: • Restoration of 18 inch...
Thanks for watching my videos. See you next week.
Music: Bensound.com - Thanks for loaning me the music track “Perception” to this restoration video.
Warmest regards
Martin

I think it’s a good idea for functionality, if it’s easily changeable you could use softer or harder jaws for the material you’re working with, as well as if/when the jaws wear down or get damaged. Instead of using a different vise or needing to ram the pins out every time to change the jaws.

Have you tried using the vice yet? I’m curious as to how the brass screws held up instead of a stronger metal for pins for the press mechanism of the vise. Beautiful restorations man really enjoy watching the process.

The brass pins should not need to be strong. The flat end of the vice screw should be pushing directly onto the clamping/moving jaw. The pins only keep the jaw connected to the screw while it is going back. In theory at least!

To answer your question, no, this tool is no longer usable. He cheaped out and took the easy way for the sake of making a video. About all he could do with this thing now is hang it on his wall to display.

Restoration is beautiful, for sure. Well done on bringing a tool back to life.. That said, you made a few design choices I disagree with. Using round head bolts with nylock nuts (even if they aren't deep enough to grab) leaves you no way to disassemble since the head will turn with the nut. But that's just me being a keyboard warrior. 😄

@@djnone8137 I mean if you are really curious about some random schmo's opinion, I suppose I can indulge you. I already stated I wouldn't have use the nylock nuts and the round head bolts with them. But if you are going to use them, I would have liked to see the round heads and the washer on the back side made smaller to not stick out the sides. And my preference would have also been to use pins again for the jaws of the vice. I think they would just look cleaner than screws with nuts, and I'd guess you could get the fit better. But again, this is all just my opinion. Not trying to take away from the great restoration. There's a load of intricate work done and I very much appreciate seeing the video.

Не восстановление, а мучение. При том же парке инструментов можно было выполнить все быстрее и менее трудозатратно. С новым неправильно подобранным крепежем это превратилось в красивый выставочный экземпляр. Там где заложен штифт, будет работать только со штифтом

  • @homeyshlitz

I would've made the heads of the new bolts smaller...the washers too. They look way to big for the vice. Kinda looks like you gave it a couple sets of big ol' eyes.
