In this video I'll show you how I restored my wife's grandfather's old axe. It was his favorite ax . I will also show you how to make an ax handle. I'll make the handle out of ash. Pleasant viewing.

@@gemofthewoods5802 There's a video of an antique firefighters axe restoration by "My Mechanics" which has the same kind of securing method, definitely worth a watch, so it would seem it's an old method that WD has bought back into use. He has done a marvellous job too.

You have done your Grandad proud transforming his old axe into a thing of beauty.
That is the most beautiful hatchet I've ever seen. Absolutely stunning and a work of art.
When restoring items with family connections, I like to just return the tool to it's original working state. It the tool was a favorite of those who have passed, I would never make such a radical change to it. It would just not sit well with me. I could just do a a radical restore job from an old axe I get for a garage sale and such. All that said, that is a beautiful modern design of an axe. Well done.

Beautifully dynamic functional artwork created right before our very eyes! Life is good!
Breathing new life into something that it’s original creator, long passed away, would be proud of. I have a deep reverence for the craftsman who created tools and the tools themselves, that have lasted beyond a lifetime. There’s something special about holding something that’s survived not only time but the abuse that it’s taken during it’s lifetime. I think about who may have used the tool and for what purpose. Thanks for giving this tool time for the next generation to hopefully use and appreciate.🙏👍🇺🇸 Your skills are off the chart BTW.

Yeah except it's not a tool anymore. If you tried to use it, it would fall apart. Not to mention now it's too light to do it's job.
Wow - you used several techniques that I have never seen before anywhere else (combo wood/metal handle - partial depth inlays, and a very ingenious way to keep the ax head on). Beautiful results on the ax head and the handle. Thank you for making that video.
@junkname9983

you never see this technique before because it's terribly impractical. It's fine if you never intend on actually using the thing but as soon as you do, you'd get terrible response from the handle and as the wooden part wear out, the metal part will start cutting into your hands when you use the axe. This is now nothing more than a show piece.
Most beautiful axe i have ever seen in my life.

Great work!
Good lord, that's a gorgeous result! I can't help wondering if the metal center of the handle might send more vibration through the hand than pure wood if actually using it regularly, but that looks more like a museum piece that you'd be keeping on the wall than actually splitting wood, so probably not an issue. I absolutely love it, though. Marvelous!
If you ever make another, similar to this one, I think it would look great mounted on a handle of MESQUITE! In the us it’s mainly used for the aromatic smoke. Few know that it is a truly beautifully grained piece of wood. Just a simple carnauba wax, buffed to a high gloss. Stunning
