Join us for a scenic road trip, a spectacular day out in Abruzzo!
We start in Anversa degli Abruzzi which is one of the 'Borghi piu belli d'Italia' located in the L'Aquila province of Abruzzo. After a stroll around the botanical garden of the Riserva Gole del Sagittario, a WWF protected natural area established in 1997, (extending over 450 hectares from Villalago to Cocullo, home to many rare plants including the Centaurea Scannensis which only grows in this area), we walk back up into Anversa degli Abruzzi before heading off to have lunch at the nearby Agriturismo La Porta dei Parchi.
We meet the inspiring owner of La Porta dei Parchi, shepherd and visionary Nunzio Marcelli who, after studying Economics in Rome combined with his passion for pastoral life and cheeses, founded this impressive and successful Bioagriturismo 40 years ago. Born in Anversa degli Abruzzi, his business has allowed Nunzio to to remain in the area, preserve the land, keep the ancient practice of the Transumanza alive (he offers a 3 day experience for tourists), create many employment opportunities and make the most exquisite artisan cheeses! They are seriously delicious!
After lunch we drive to Castrovalva along a spectacular stretch of very narrow road, tunnels and stunning scenery! Castrovalva is a beautiful hamlet clinging to the top of a rocky spur with the most wonderful views. The village is depicted in the 1930 lithograph by Dutch artist M.C. Escher.
The impressive drive continues from Castrovalva down to Lago di San Domenico just outside the village of Villalago where we stroll along the shore of this man-made lake. We also visit the Hermitage - Eremo di San Domenico accessible via the little chapel.
Hope you enjoy this video of our day out in Abruzzo. Please do subscribe to our channel if you haven’t already; it means a lot to us. Grazie! ♥️

We love you too Maury! 😍And we love your wonderful feedback. So glad you liked our video and yes the area we visited, in fact the itinerary we did, is a real must do for tourists! La Porta dei Parchi is definitely worth a visit when you are in the area. Nunzio is a fantastic host and such a wonderful person and his cheeses are exquisite. We do offer this itinerary as a day trip for those who either need transport or are happy to drive convoy in their own vehicles. Those narrow windy roads take some negotiation! Of course you are an Abruzzese who travels around the region a lot anyway, so I'm sure you've already been to these places, probably on your motorbike! Must be amazing to take those windy roads on two wheels! 😍

@@sladdengobros1081 Oh yes, much more affordable. Authentic Italy. Not much has changed. Very different to Tuscany. We are 45 mins from ski resorts (there's plenty here, including Italy's 5th largest, Roccaraso), and 45 mins from the Adriatic coast which is so wonderfully warm and like relaxing in a giant bathtub! Cost of living is much more affordable down here still, the people are incredibly friendly, the food and wine is, in our opinion the most delicious of all regions!
