EXPLAINING HYDRAULIC MULTIPLIERS, 3RD FUNCTIONS, & DIVERTERS

EXPLAINING TRACTOR HYDRAULICS
After a recent video on tractor attachments that require a third function, some viewers expressed a difference in interpretation (from mine) regarding what a third function is on a tractor. So I thought I'd tell you how I look at it, what's most important, why you should consider one (no matter what you call it), and how you can go about getting one. You'll hear about diverters, hydraulic multipliers, grapple ready, rear remotes, and third functions in this video. I attempt to de-mystify and support my view, but in the end I'm not sure it's going to bring any agreement!
In addition, many tractor attachments require more hydraulic functions than what are found in most standard setups. Adding additional hydraulic functions can be very costly so discovering cheaper ways to get this additional functionality can save big money in the long run. Popular ways to do so are through diverter kits and hydraulic multipliers such as those kits offered by Summit Hydraulics.

Does the Summit Hydraulic 6 solenoid multiplier attach directly into the 3rd function/rear remote on a JD 3046R? Then using a combination of the electronic control box included in the kit and the 3rd function button on hydraulic joystick I can choose and operate 1 of 6 hydraulic cylinders? Kit's installation instructions are not very detailed.

Nice job -- SO, I need a rear function NOW for offset flail mower with a slide, but expect to have a grapple bucket not too far down the road. The diverter would work of course but the third function just seems better long term. Could I add a third function valve and run it to rear for now, then add a multiplier later and run hoses from there to the front? Or could the multiplier be mounted nearer the controls and run one set of hoses to rear and one to the front, for overall less hoses? I am a little OCD so I do not want cluttered wires and hoses. (Kubota MX5200)

Lol, good ol hydraulics, simple and confusing at the same time, just like electronics! Let's combine them to have electronic hydraulics, and call it multipliers! Lmfao. I'm with you, the 3rd circuit, no matter the location is the 3rd function, period. I'm so glad to see you break down that multiplier, I feel that's perfect for 90% of us tractor owners. You need them, but not all at 1 time. The only thing I scratch my head a little at is the exposure of the wires, upside-down and in the open, but then again I'm not driving my tractor thru salt like a road vehicle either. You definitely know your tractor setups, and I greatly appreciate the time you invest in explaining what you know. Now we need your brother to test his knowledge in a video, that would be funny.

You explained that very well. I am a new tractor owner I actually just purchased 2021 Massey Ferguson 1825 e with a backhoe skid loader bucket and a 5 foot bush hog. Your KZread page and a couple other KZread Pages have really helped flatten the learning curve and make me more confident with my own equipment. Understanding that third function and the different capabilities adding those extra hydraulic circuits to your tractor really makes a difference when you are a new tractor owner especially. Awesome video and information. Thanks

Thanks so much! I am shopping for my first tractor. I wanted to have it “grapple ready” but also wanted a “remote” in the rear for an implement that I would use infrequently. I now understand that I have an option of using hoses from the front to the rear without the additional $1500 dealer was gang to charge for the rear remote. Not sure which way I’ll go but I like options and even better, understanding them!

Another very instructive video. I agree, while it is common for a tractor to have a 3rd function up front for a grapple, it is no different than having a 3rd function out the back instead for a hydraulic top link. Adding a hydraulic tilt means you need a 4th function. The cheapest way to get a function out the back is to manually swap hoses with the curl/dump connectors. That is how I currently run my side shift flail mower. But if I needed to use the bucket I'd be out of luck. That multiplier looks interesting as I have a rear connection for the backhoe.

Courtney, you brought up about the additional hydraulic circuits having value on a tractor. Someone considering a new or used tractor and concerned about the cost of additional hydraulic, should also realize that not only the advantages of using it, but also the additional hydraulic function/s adds value to the machine come take-in time. May be more dollars up front, but well worth it in usability, and resale value. Hydraulics are a wonderful thing!

When I was shopping for a compact tractor approximately 2 years ago I did not understand tractor hydraulics. I thought I was going to get a grapple right away. I told the dealer I wanted loader mounted 3rd function. He talked about running the hoses from the back to the front and that sounded like a cobble job. I ended up with a 2025R because Deere announced a loader mounted 3rd function kit with loader control mounted buttons. Dealers certified welder also cut down my ROPS to fit into my trailer. I also did not under stand power beyond. I like my 2025R but if I was doing it again I would have a large 2 series.

If I add a 3rd function it'll be with a diverter and the pressure line going to the front loader, then the return going to the back of the tractor, and then the return from there going back to the diverter. Then with a short male/male hydraulic hose just move it to the front or back to complete the loop. I can't think of a scenario I'd personally ever require both at once and it'd make it way more flexible at a pretty low cost

Great video, I wish you would have done this a year ago. I use my 3rd function for my front snow blade angulation and when needed, I ran another set of hoses to the rear of my tractor to act as a rear remote. So I have to disconnect the hoses that go to the front and connect the hoses that go to the rear, but it is well worth it to be able to control my hydraulic top link. Now if you can explain the different Hydraulic coupler to me :-), I am always unsure of what couplers I really need.

I've found sometimes the easiest way to figure out what you need (with many things in life, not just tractors) is identify what it is you want to do (the end result) and work backwards to identify what you need to accomplish that result. And once you've identified that process or parts, look at them to see if they incur any hidden costs (limiting the functionality to do something else) or benefits (say a tool that meets today's need, but can serve other functions that would be needed in the future. Then, obviously, factor in costs.

I have an older Farmall which has "one way" hydraulics. (IE: It provides pressure to "lift", but when you select "lower" it just goes to basically "float" and lets the implement down by gravity) I've always wanted to find a way to take that one way flow and plumb it into some sort of diverter valve to allow adding two way remotes.

After some reflection, I think the confusion over what constitutes a "third-function" comes from the manufacturer's (Summit, WD Long, etc.) of the "third-function kits" and their choice of description of their product. These kits are all labeled as a "third-function kit". All of these kits add an addition hydraulic circuit, and these kits tap into the existing loader circuit to add this circuit to the front of the loader (what you called "grapple-ready" - yet another term to add to the confusion, though it does more clearly describe it). Perhaps what these manufacturers should have called this kit is a "loader 3rd-function kit". It would then specifically apply to just the loader, and there wouldn't be this confusion. It clearly reflects that it is adding a 3rd function to the loader. About the JD that had the "III" on the label. That "III" would only apply if the loader is standard on that tractor - and it assumes that you start counting your functions with the loader, then move on to the rear. I can see counting the total number of functions that you have; the problem comes in when you start assigning numbers to any specific one of the functions.

Just help me understand it way easier. My next question to you is if I bought one with a rear remote do they make something smaller like the diverter you got on the back of your 4066r that will give me a few more functions without giving me 10 function? I think I know the answer to that is yes because I've seen it in a bunch of other videos you had on other tractors. But I'm not for sure if it was the same thing I like the little box and being able to wire it I can do all that myself what would something like that cost on your 4066r? Just a rough cost of materials I can do all the plumbing and wiring. Ps. Sorry about the last questions I asked that before I went down to the comments. It's in the comments right there I went to Summit website that is awesome so simple to find and really affordable I thought. For the fourth circuit would be for complete circuits correct? Or would that be two functions?

If you only have 2 hydraulic circuits on your loader, and you add a rear remote then I would say that rear remote is the 3rd function. If you have your 2 loader circuits plus a rear remote and then add an additional circuit to your loader I would argue that's a fourth function. But maybe people by calling it a 3rd function aren't counting anything but the functions on your loader. No matter how many other remotes you have. I have a feeling that's what people are getting at.

When I was introduced to all this at the dealer I learned 'third function ' as being exclusive to the front and with couplers at the end of the loader. Have a question I have not really seen answered here or anywhere else, Wanting to install one of these on an older tractor using its circuits to run the front loader. So my 3 circuit box I would install would power the loader main lift, flex wing main lift, and flex wing wings. Hay cutter and so on. When I decide to switch circuits I need the previous one to hold pressure as its holding something in the air till I go back to it! I reached out to summit and they confirmed the solenoids are continuous duty so you can leave then switched on, but nothing on switching under pressure?

Are your 4th and 5th SCVs mechanical levers and fully independent SCVs? In my 3320 (factory cab) the kit I've found on the JD parts website points to the 4th and 5th SCV option actually being a diverter from the loader joystick, whereas the open station can have a ROPs mounted independent 4th and 5th. I have open slots in the control station plastic trim (which looks very similarl to your tractor), so I'm wondering if there's an option for additional SCVs that are not diverted from the loader joystick.

A True 3rd Function has it's own circuit of fluid, unlike a diverter kit that robs the hydraulic flow from another function. So with a true 3rd function you can operate both functions same time unlike a diverter kit. Did you say that already, lol?

I actually just priced the factory deere 3rd function for my 1025r its $1000 for parts to make it "grapple ready". $1500 for the parts and to have my dealer to install it, but many people have to me that you can install it yourself.

It takes a trained JD technician 7-8 hours to install the JD 3rd function on the 1025r. It's an absolute nightmare of a process. You should see the amount of disassembly required. If they are only charging you $500 to install it, then you're getting a deal. I'm not aware of anyone tackling that install themselves.

Heck our John Deere dealer charged us $4,800 for installing the 3rd function on our new 3046R with cab 3 years ago. A couple of months ago the 3rd function quit working and cost us $380 for a JD dealership to fix it and it lasted about a month and quit working again. This tractor has been nothing but trouble from day one. With a FEL and a shredder mower i don't think it is worth the $53k we paid for it.

Okay, forewarning: “old school” factory 3rd function question here. MACHINE: New Holland Lx565 (i.e., the “x" stands for came standard with “auxillary,” or 3rd function circuit flat quick connects mounted on left boom arm from factory, Serial Number 39115) skid steer with hand (steering) and foot (left = boom, right = bucket or curl) controls. IMPORTANT NOTE: the auxillary control (3rd function) is operated by tilting the right handgrip downward toward one’s right thigh (can be locked there with a slide pin) AND mechanically opens and closes a third spool on the control valve under the floorboard, i.e., 3rd function is NOT electrically operated through a solenoid valve. QUESTION: to add a fixed arm backhoe attachment (i.e., skid steer steering does backhoe swing; skid steer boom does backhoe up/down (kingpost or boom); skid steer bucket (curl) does backhoe “elbow”(dipper) and the backhoe bucket cylinder comes with an electrical plug that later model joystick operated units have a receptacle for (which Lx565s lack!), can I operate (i.e., with FULL feathering capabilities) the fixed arm backhoe attachment’s bucket cylinder simply by rotating the Lx565’s right handgrip (WITHOUT locking in place), or do I need to add an extra 2-way hydraulic valve in the auxillary circuit (i.e., and lock the right handgrip rotated down toward my thigh)?

I’m thinking of a 1025R purchase. Has anyone installed a Summit diverter circuit and then installed a mechanical diverter on the “3rd” function? My idea is to mechanically divert the hydraulic flow between a loader grapple, for example, and a rear remote I would install for snow blower chute rotation. Wondering if anyone has a kit like this. It would be fairly easy, just some more hoses and fittings.

Question: I have a Branson 2515 with a backhoe. When my backhoe is off, I connect the 2 lines to each other to complete the circuit. I want to add a hydraulic toplink for use with my box blade. What is the cheapest, but correct way to accomplish this? Being a new tractor owner, I would think that I could run those 2 lines to a control box (with a control lever), then run 2 lines to the hydraulic toplink, however I haven't seen anything on the market that would do this. Any advice?

Good question. Yes, you need a control valve (stop/start flow) in between the tractor and attachment. To be honest, I'm not positive if the multiplier would work with PB. Although many do install a traditional hydraulic valve on their PB, so leads me to believe it would.
