I like P1 and P2! I like to hear stories about F1, or tech stuff. The general conversation during practice is fun! It makes for a nice build up to the weekend. It would be great to have the teams mess with the set up of the cars again! With the cost cap it will stop teams from having “qualifying” set ups.

I’ve enjoyed exactly the way it’s been for a while, so that qualifying really counts and the race really counts. We have a 23 times a year now. Why do we need it more than once during a weekend? It’s not broke, so don’t try to fix it! A mini race is of mini importance, and only reduces the grandness of the great race on Sunday.

I like a somewhat meangless friday for the following reasons: 1) When you work on Friday, how am I suppose to watch? 2) When I attend races in person, I can stroll around the track and not worry I might miss something if I get back to my seat later than planned 3) It's a nice slow buildup to the race with current format 4) With Sprint, it is, in total, less track time for F1 and less time for the fans to watch F1 go around, which is why we are there when attending

I disagree - from a tv perspective yep - sunday is the main drawcard. What about the 350,000 fans that pay top dollar for the weekend though? Are we meant to say oh that's ok you get a few hours of questionable laps on Friday, a good 1 hour on Saturday and Sunday the race. There are a lot of tracks that don't get the support of f2/3 and f1 is the only race - and these tickets are very expensive. This is an entertainment product first and foremost and as such, the weekend needs to reflect that.

I think there should be a full race on Saturday or Friday but with equal machinery. Like f1 should make 20 base spec cars that are almost the same. you can only tweek some setups and tries strategies like how it is between two team mates. So we actually get to know whos the fastest driver and for how long. And it should only have points for drivers championship. And the race on Sunday should have the team championship points

Happy to turn up for three days that build to a climax I don't want that Sunday experience diminished by gimmicky nonsense on a Friday/Saturday. That places like Silverstone are rammed for all 3 days shows that isn't an issue there. It's only an issue for DTS fans and races in places without a real F1 fan base where you get one man and his dog turn up on Friday.

@@KeenJT f1 should "NOT" be for entertainment first!!! F1 should be about motor racing using the best racing cars and the best drivers racing them to the limit! which will create all the entertainment you will need, without being false! F1 has been a bit on the boring side since 2014, but has also had boring times before, but that is part of F1. turning F1 into a entertainment first will, in time, destroy F1.

@@IAmKry it's the atmosphere. The city-state lives and breathes F1. It's practically in its DNA. Monaco is one of the best races on the calendar; the most nail biting wall kissing and the closest the fans/press can ever get to the cars at racing speeds. Plus there are no 'free' DRS overtakes; it's down to skill and racecraft only. It never looks like much on TV because it's the only race that FOM HQ aren't in control of the camera feeds. Ceding control over to the French for anything is a mistake; last year it was a disaster. F1 has already ditched some of the most iconic circuits in favour of bids from Oil-rich countries, if they drop Monaco (which they never will because it's the highlight of the drivers' and their teams' season) then the racing spirit (yes that includes the schmoozing) will be truely lost.

I think they could update some of the qualifying formats on regular weekends (for races where the track is really short). They can have two Q1 sessions of 10 cars each. Top 5 from each session go to the final Q session. That would fix a lot of the issues they have with cars being interfered with by other cars going slow waiting to start their flying lap. Just a thought.

Friday qualifying is a horrible idea, most of us would be at work, where is the entertainment in that (unless they make those Friday Stat Holidays :) )? I agree with Jess, what is the value of the sprint, and i feel this is massively diluting the suspense build up over the weekend. The whole build up over the weekend to the "gran finale" which is the race is great. Saturday morning watching qualifying, and then Sunday the race. Also the amount of ppl that drive to survive pulled into the sport, so many ppl i hear now stating that watching F1 has even become a family event in thier households. Damon around the 26 minute mark is spot on, you can not have a classic race every weekend. The differences between the races, not knowing what to expect is what just all part of it, and part of the entertainment. Trying o force something that isnt, is artificial and will fail

What Max is saying is they’re diluting the sport itself for the sake of entertainment and bigger profits. The basis of any pro sport is that the best will win and by adding more randomness (less practice time, unnecessary red flags etc.) to race weekends possibility of that happening will decrease.

how about this: Friday: • 1 Free Practice session (1 hour) • Qualifying in the current Q1/Q2/Q3 format, parc-fermé from here on until the end of Saturday Saturday: • a One-Shot Qualifying for the Sprint Race in RANDOMIZED order (one flying lap per car, the in-lap of one car is the out-lap of the next .. it's random so if the weather is variable that's just luck and exciting, but still fair - like the wind in ski jumping) • the Sprint Race (25% the distance of the GP), completely stand-alone from the GP, points for the first ten places ranging from 10 to 1 Sunday: • Warm-Up (30 mins) with the possibility to change more than just front wing levels on the car - it's a gamble, and you have to be quick, but it makes up a little bit for having just one free practice session • Grand Prix

Problem with that is F2 is supposed to show the skills of the drivers, making them ascend to the pinacle eventually. But that's rendered possible because F2 cars are "all the same", if you bottle things up like this in F1, you just put at the back those who worked (or cheated) the best (in the end, if FIA allows it, why not ... ) It removes an important part of the game, if innovation just puts you at the back of the grid ...

I firmly believe that the tyres are what holds this sport back. Yes the new aero regulations allow a car to follow another car more closely, but what good is that if one of those cars are on fresh tyres and the other is on old tyres? How many times have we seen a car overtake another car and then disappear into the distance because they’re on better tyres? There are no battles anymore, it’s always a sitting duck vs the faster car on fresher tyres. There should be one tyre compound per weekend, and it should be hard enough so that each car can go flat out from the start of the race to the end without any management. Fix this and you fix the sport!

The one factor a lot of people, especially FOM, are overlooking, is practice time for drivers. Less than three hours a weekend is already a ludicrous amount of time to “practice” for drivers, and given that teams aren’t allowed to test their own cars anymore, when exactly are drivers supposed to practice? This is especially apparent with rookies. We’ve had an inordinate amount of rookie mistakes these last few years and some of it is absolutely a result of not being given enough time to get used to the fastest circuit cars in the world!

My Proposed F1 Weekend Format: Friday Morning - 90-minute practice session Friday Afternoon - Qualifying with full championship points awarded from 1st down to 19th Saturday Morning - 90-minute practice session Saturday Afternoon - Reverse grid sprint race to determine GP starting order (length calculated to give the fastest qualifiers a fighting chance at the end of the actual GP) Sunday - GP with full championship points awarded from 1st down to 19th. 1) Less practising, more racing. 2) Races with mixed up orders/fast cars out of position are always the most exciting, but we only get them when a car breaks down or it rains in quali. 3) Both quali and the GP receive full championship points from 1st down to 19th so there's no way to "game" the system.

Hi all, Just wanted to say that I love your podcast. Perfect blend of banter and informative talk. Just had 2 questions for the podcast if you care to discuss. Why can't teams use a mixture of tires during a race during this modern era of F1. I believe some teams/drivers used to do it in the 80s. For example a combination of softs in the front and hards or mediums in the rear for rear limited tracks. I was also wondering what you think about bringing back mid race refueling from maybe 2026 onwards. With cars said to be more efficient than ever we could have cars with smaller fuel tanks (lighter quicker cars) so teams would have to factor in fuel levels and refuelling stops into strategy. I feel that it should make racing a bit more exciting and safety shouldn't be a concern because plenty of motor sports still do mid race fueling to this day.

  • @ZwilnikSF

There's a simple way to make the main race more fun. Drop the tyre compounds picked for the races 2 steps towards the softest compounds and only bring 2 compounds to each race (so basically, no hard tyres and the other 2 are softer). That would pretty much force a 2 stop race at least and negate any real benefit of too much tyre management. Other than Checo Perez who could probably 1 stop on tippy toe still :)

This format changes a lot, which is good for the show, more racing action yes. Less practices means there is a chance for the good drivers to shine rather than the team to work about the best for the drives. I would like to tweak this format like this Friday(Free Practice, Sprint Qualifying), Saturday(Sprint race, GP Qualifying) Sunday (race).

Completely agree with Max, F1 are demanding more and more from drivers, at some point it becomes too much and not enjoyable. For Damon to question whether he is enjoying F1 already is just ridiculous. Max is a racer, he competes in iracing in his free time driving other categories of cars and I'm sure has aspirations in other categories which might become very attractive if F1 keeps demanding more and more time and effort, especially the media aspect.

Been a fan for 30 years and I'm happy with sprint races. The changes now take away the shuffling of the deck that the sprint provided for the main race, but it does maintain the purity of qualy and the race. Personally I'd like 1 qualy, and the sprint is a full reverse grid of mayhem. Then the race starts with the qualy grid. and kept pure. The reverse grid format can allow the smaller teams a chance to shine, and jeopardy for championship leaders to risk overtakes for points.

Sprint races can be improved and the overall weekend will be improved. If they add extra points systems I came up with. After Sprint races, the top 5 finishers get the following points. 6, 4,3,2,1. This is also used as the qualifying. The big twist is the 5 winner will do a reverse grid but with a bigger twist. For every position you make from the reverse grid you gain a point. So this point will be added to the finished points position. We all want overthinking and this system should guarantee that. I want to see the best cars, and drivers overthinking each other rather than disappearing into the difference

I'm not a massive fan of sprints but I prefer this to the previous iteration where it was just an extension of the race and therefore allowed the stronger cars to just undo the chaos of inadequate quali prep. It also meant some rather bizarre penalties, for example LH's disqualification for Brazil quali affecting his sprint rather than the race, which just seems silly.

The reason 2021 was interesting was because the regulations had remained the same for a long time. I know the sport has to become relevant to keep the manufacturers interested but they just need to decide on some regulations and then it will be a much closer pack. As it does everytime as you said towards the ends of the regs. They should just pick some regs but allow the engine tech to change to keep the car manufacturers in the sport. It will be a lot cheaper and make it a much more accessible sport.

For the sprint, how about they put all of the F1 drivers in identical cars? For cost reasons, doesn’t have to be F1 cars, but have them race some sort of single seaters and see who comes out on top? Should have no reflection on the main F1 points system, just seems to fit the “entertainment” element than Stefano is pushing.

The thing don't like/get about the sprint format, is why we now have 2 quali sessions back to back, for different "race" events. Why not do sprint wuali Friday, sprint race sat am, main quali sat pm then race Sunday? Confusing that main quali and race are so far apart, with a different quali/race in-between. I do agree with the change of introducing different quali though, as using the sprint to set the main grid was a bad idea

I believe the FIA has made a decision to use different tires for each stage of Qualifying: hard for Q1, medium for Q2, and soft for Q3. Additionally, it could be beneficial to introduce a mandatory 2 pitstop rule during the race, where each car is required to use all three sets of tires according to their preference. This would eliminate the strategy of saving tires for a single pitstop race. To further enhance the competition, a minimum of 10 laps on the hard tire could be imposed whenever it is not the optimal tire choice (I came up with this idea later)... IJS

Seeing as the car is such a massive advantage/disadvantage to determining who wins the race and yet the most interesting part of F1 is which driver is quickest, how about all the drivers are in a pool and they each have to drive in every car during. the season? The constructors championship would still be valid and the drivers championship would be truly representative of which driver is best?

  • @mikedizzle2129

The practice sessions are not only for the drivers or the team engineers to collect data and perfect the car as much they possibly can, but in the circuits they’ve newly introduced or where the track is located in a city’s streets and they’ve laid the tarmac or track itself just for the GP, it is brand new for racing. Pros and cons to that of course just like removal tire blankets or decreases to their temperatures. It’s a safety issue and without anyone running on it the race isn’t as optimized for speed. I will assess if I’m for or against the sprint races after a few, but till then I say why not! A championship is a championship, maybe they take a page out of football and turn it to a champion league separate series and cup from domestic league’s. Hell they can even package it and sell it to broadcasters like UEFA 😂

This is what I'd do- Friday; P1 immediately followed by a 20 minute qually (single session to post your fastest time) for the Sprint race that follows later that day. Saturday; P2 Qually for race (in usual format) Sunday; Race. This way the Sprint day could be a separate entity altogether. Have a sprint championship. 🤷‍♂️. I don't think it would take anything away from the World Championship. Also. Make teams use all 3 kinds of tyres in a race. So, guaranteed at least 2 pit stops each car. Only cancelled if wet or inters are used. That could bring about loads of strategy. Lots of jeopardy. Drivers could also push more instead of saving tyres.

What if they divide the grid randomly into 4 groups of 5 drivers each for each race. Assign each group a starting space (group 1 is 1-5, group 2 is 6-10 etc) and they qualify against the other drivers in their group for the grid position in that group. Have the group of drivers change each race and the grid places change each race. This way all teams and drivers have opportunities to race at the front and the back and have the grid be mixed up. Puts more excitement around top cars and drivers working their way through the field. Plus it requires more strategy around pitting, giving new parts, grid penalties, tire choices and more.

Whats the problem we are trying to fix? F1 ticket prices are skyrocketing to the point where pure race fans can't even access the event. Cost Cap, regulation changes, sprint races - a lot of changes in a short period of time and we haven't had a better R1 to R22 F1 experience since 2021.

We should focus on what is best for the future of our sport. Budget cost caps has already severely effected our beloved sport but can understand why ..... even if I don't agree with that change. No matter what angle I take to attach a value 'F1 Sprint races', I can only see the damage this format does to the F1 race experience. Asking drivers to push the limits 29 times, in F1 races, while adhering to their extra ordinary compulsory media obligations, is asking to much from the drivers. What other sport demands more media coverage before, during & after the race from their stars?

Maybe have reverse grid sprint on Saturday based on the final standings of the preceding race which counts for half points. (Just for entertainment ) Keep FP1,2,Quali and race. Thereafter, there could be 1 experiment with having the sprint quali determine the grid on Sunday (this sprint quali has no points) (bring back FP3, by the way.) Theoretically, the fastest cars should be somewhere in the middle of the pack after reverse grid quali and should be able to go on to win the race from there with a bit of a challenge from the slower cars. Maybe with the second experiment you can bring back engine modes, allow free setup changes between sessions, increase tyre blanket temperatures, increase cost cap by 35%

If they're going to do this, during Friday qualifying, they should go all in and alter the way it works. Instead of having them all out on track during Q1 and Q2, they should split the sessions into Q1A/Q1B and Q2A/Q2B meaning that teams would only ever be allowed to send out one of their drivers per sub-session. It should be a free choice as to which sub-session a driver is sent out, however, Q1A should run straight into Q1B then, after a 10 min break, Q2A should run straight into Q2B. The 2 slowest from each sub-session should be eliminated followed by the next slowest driver from either sub-session. That way, there'd be less of an issue regards bunching of drivers for position at the end of the lap and there would be no opportunity for drafting unless teams make agreements to work together to gain a net advantage. That said, allowing 2 different teams to coordinate drafting via radio should be outright banned. I'm thinking the format would fit into the whole 'sprint' idea as teams will have to think on their feet, and, it may result in some more interesting grids as buddy-up systems of qualifying would then be reliant on a less than perfect arrangement.

MotoGP has more practice, but each session is important in setting the grid. There's at least 10 minutes in all practice sessions where the riders are going flat out to get into a top 10 position for qualifying. That's ~30m of racing across Friday and Saturday. Watching both sports, I think MotoGP has got it right.

Simon, it may be a version of T20 Cricket, but you don't have different formats mixed in one world cup. You have a separate world cup for Test cricket, another world cup for T20 and another for One Day Internationals. So the only way is to either have a separate F1 championship that is only sprints, or just get rid of sprints. I would rather have multiple qualifying session rather than another race. It would be even more fun if we had a Q4 and Q5 to fight for the upper positions even more.
