Red Bull's genius 'triple DRS' F1 trick explained
Спорт
Lewis Hamilton said he'd never seen a car as fast as the Red Bull RB19 after the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. And he wasn’t only talking about its all-round performance.
For Hamilton was also amazed at the speed differential when Max Verstappen overtook him at the end of lap 11, breezing past on the run to the first corner. Yes, Verstappen had the DRS open and Hamilton’s was closed, but even so it was a big difference of as much as 34 kilometres per hour - as much as twice what might traditionally be expected.
That’s led to questions about what clever trick Red Bull might be using to achieve this effect. In this video, we’ll explain just how big the Red Bull DRS advantage is and how it is achieving it.

I mean I wish it was us, and then I would get really angry people telling us that we’re walking over Formula 1. Unfortunately, this is a cars sport more than the drivers, we know that makes more of a difference. Red Bull has a very strong line-up and what we know is that if a car is really good, all the other drivers cannot do much to stay in the fight. @thatrustyone1943
Жыл бұрын
@@NandoFIT-df8ly very easy actually. Vettel and Riciardo are drivers who can drive insanely well if a car is set up in a certain way. This is common, like we see with Hamilton. The "best of all time" was beaten by his new teammate, and this all had to do with Lewis not being able to adjust quickly to a new car. Ferrari had a difficult car when Vettel was having a tough time with it, Leclerc too but he adjusted faster. Daniel was great in RB, needed some time to get used to the slightly different Renault, but couldn't get used to the McLaren. It's because the car philosophy didn't suit his driving style. Verstappen destroyed his recent teammates regularly, mostly because the car was setup for his driving style, which not many others prefer. Not to discredit any driver that wins over their teammate, but the car has to suit the driver in order for the driver to perform to their fullest potential.

It's almost ridiculous how the RB19 can have so much downforce and top speed without letting it seem like there's a compromise between either. I'm a Merc fan but I have to give Newey and his team their flowers.
@launchsquid
Жыл бұрын
It's not super common but it's also not that weird, there have been many times that the best F1 car of that year has that very quality. Ross Brawn talked about one of his old Ferrari's being so good they would deliberately run a downforce setting low enough to make sure they were quicker in a straight line than their rivals at the time, whilst carrying enough downforce that they remained the fastest in the slow corners. He said it was all possible simply because they had the best downforce/drag ratio at the time. Basically they didn't try to run their car at it's optimum setting, they just made sure they were fastest in the speed trap and fastest in the slowest corner and had a balance the drivers liked, with that the car was always too quick and the drivers were always comfortable pushing it. As a counterpoint, I've heard David Coulthard talk about his Adrian Newey designed McLaren's from 1998/1999 and he talked about how they weren't his favorite F1 cars despite them being some of the best he ever had in his career (relative to the field) because to get the best from them their setups required "too much understeer" and he just didn't like that balance in his car. If he dialed it out, he have up too much performance. If Redbull have so much performance in their car, they might just be doing what Ross said Ferrari did, focusing on giving Max and Checo a balance they like as long as they have the top speed trap and fastest slow corner speeds.

Also, if I understand you correctly, Red Bull is managing the down force increase to be less extreme so they they can actually gain higher overall speed by making the car a little bit less effective less draggy, less downforce at top speeds and doing that with the edge of the floor? Which in turn allows them to run a softer suspension and get rid of the porpoising as well. Thanks for the insight I really interesting video 👍👍👍👍
What a fantastic explanation of what Red Bull are doing. cheers.

Spectacular video
The Drs flap should close when the cars are alongside each other that way we can actually have drivers trying to outbreak each other at the end of the straight
I would like to see a slight shake up in DRS. That being no DRS use for qualifying. It is an overtake assist feature, so let's allow it for overtaking only. Not sure exactly what it will change but it seems more initiative of the philosophy behind it at least.
With the others words a Newy' s masterpiece. A living legend.
Interesting concept of the dimmer switch in regards to how extra downforce at speed is managed. Neat video, thx!
I think your missing the effect of the air flow through the side pod onto the beam wing, an extra clean air to play with that the other cars are missing

The only part I think is interchangeable is the front wing. As it can be easily adjusted during pit stops
5:00 Does not stall the beam wing as much as reduce the effect of the beam wing. A stall would increase the drag, a reduction in effect reduces both the downforce and drag simultaneously.
Lewis: Never seen a car so fast. How quick lewis forgets how fast he was in Brazil in 2021 when he was flying past everyone due to that engine and aero package.

Engine Yes .... Aero not so much. Merc was never good at aero exactly why they are suffering right now. They use to build 3-4 different concept cars for a season and picked the "Less draggy one" slapped on the +60 kw PU and left the rest of the field in dust. That and the fact that the Ferrari & Honda PU has played catch up until 2021 has gone out the window, and with the cost cap it sort of rubbed salt in the wounds.
The f1 community has become sooo toxic that on a video focusing on RedBull’s genius engineering feat, everyone is focused on drama

what’s crazy is that the Merc isn’t even that bad, it’s the third (now 4th) fastest car on track imagine if Hamilton had to drive the McClaren, he would retire mid season
I guess he has never seen a car go so fast because the last time it happened, he was in it.
Merc wanna pull thier finger out then...
The Red Bulls in this ground effect era just look fast. It’s purely coincidental but often in history the fastest cars have looked the sleekest and smoothest too. Newey is renowned for his aerodynamic genius so it’s no surprise really. As much as I don’t like Red Bull from an ethical standpoint they make a bloody fantastic racecar from time to time.
Does the the texture of the paint have any effect aerodynamically? Because some cars have a glossy coating and some have a matte coating...
@gergelystechnicmodels8565
Жыл бұрын
From what I’ve heard the main difference between glossy and matte paint is that matte paint is lighter.
@brainstorm4207
Жыл бұрын
matte finishes save you a few grams of weight but texture may have something to do with how air flows over it. a smooth ball flows very different from a golf ball with a bumpy texture so you may have a point or maybe its negligible. Only Adrian Newey really knows lmao
@KillCamEditoR
Жыл бұрын
For the paint they use, it doesn’t no. It’s a matter of weight. You could have paint which could have aero effect, but it would need to be very very bumpy, the golf ball dimple is a good idea of size for the bumps. What that does is ensure you have a turbulent boundary layer. In cases where you know flow will detach, this helps control when and where it detaches, which leads to reduced drag. However, in the case where you want nice, smooth, laminar, attached flow for as long as you can, bumpy paint would increase drag, and more importantly, mess up the airflow to other parts of the car, which is why they don’t do it
Hammy is just crying as usual
I wonder how much of Alpha Tauri’s budget they spent developing this for the Red Bull. Funny how a company that owns two teams is seeing a massive improvement for their primary team and drastic decline in their secondary team as soon as the cost cap really started to kick in. In a sport that takes everything to win sacrificing your other team is most definitely on the table.
Newey is , no doubt , an aerodynamistist par excellence .
Drag doesn’t scale linearly as you suggest in this video. It scales with the square of velocity. So the drag you have at 300kph is not just 3 times the drag at 100kph. It’s 9 times the drag.
Sounds like Mercedes just had a bad car design
