McLaren. McLaren are the team with the environment unlike the rest. Mercedes has Allison, Ferrari has politics and is distant in Maranello, and Aston couldn’t be colder and more old school if they tried, which Newey hates. McLaren is wholesome and a massive team with potential, and the driving factors that pushed him away are so far gone it’s almost a new team.

I don't think Marko or RBR would want that, maybe one or two is enough.

I'd put 90% odds on newey just retiring. He has spent all his live on the cutting edge of competition, giving 110% for 45 years. He's 65years old as of today, my own dad has retired at 58. Give this man a break. I think the only thing he's joining is the local golf club and goddamn he's earned it.

Ever heard of the term "gardening leave"? If he leaves Red Bull, he will have at least a year to do all the sailing he wants. I am pretty sure a year is more than enough to satisfy his love for sailing. Just because he has bought a boat, it doesn't mean he will spend 24/7 on the boat for years on end.

Listen, if they don't mind hiring a 40 year old Hamilton, I am pretty sure they won't mind waiting for another couple of years for Newey if they have to. Because what is the alternative? Besides, it will probably be good for Newey to take a short break after all these years to feel refreshed and recharged before stepping through the doors of the Scuderia to take on his next challenge.

Agreed, the best thing to happen to F1 was Brawn going to F1 proper, Newey joining him to make the rule book better would be amazing.

If he isn’t retiring, Aston is the most likely choice. Being reunited with his Valkyrie and Dan Fallows, along with being able to work with Alonso makes more sense than Ferrari

ppl don’t realise that Horner already said in 2021 that they were preparing the team for when Newey would leave at some point. Mentoring engineers, building departments, Wache promotion… Wache and his team at the factory are the real full time designers…Newey was only part time. @@Redlingstein Time will tell. I think you are massively underestimating Newey's contribution. I believe that so far in his career no team has done better after he left than when he was there. The other designers and engineers at RBR have not yet had to do it without Newey's guidance, so it is impossible to say how well the team will do if/when he leaves.

Imagine being so good as a designer/engineer, your (potential) transfer is talked about like a driver transfer. Can't decide whether I'd put Chapman or Newey on the #1 spot. This is a lot of speculation, BUT: If bad comes to worse, and Red Bull F1 as it is now falls apart at the top, will that prompt Max to move to another team as well? I'd love to see him in a team like Aston Martin are right now (imagine a Verstappen/Alonso pairing). Solid midfielders with a lot of potential. We've all seen what Max can do in a top car. I really want to see what he could do in a midfield one. Then again, someone of his caliber will probably always race for one top team or another, unless he wants to pull a Schumacher.

Nope gardening leave can be longer than 1 year

So to sum up rumors regarding RB this year: Horner is fired for misconduct, Horner gets Marko fired in power struggle, Max quits and moves to Merc, Newey quits and moves to Ferrari. Until now none of that happened and it starts to feel more like targeted media campaign than actual crisis in RB. There likely is conflict between Marko-Horner and "external forces" (Toto most likely) are trying to pour some fuel on on that small sparks expecting it to burst into huge fire. In the meantime if I was an exec at Mercedes (car brand) I would start considering selling my 1/3 of shares in the team since it's now 3rd fastest Merc powered team on the grid. Toto is clearly incompetent and more focused on his revenge against Horner than on running his own team. So the most likely cause of this story is that Newey plans his retirement and Toto is afraid that the only battle they can win now is the battle with Williams for the title of worst Merc powered car.

Checo had an atrocious season and still easily beat any non-RB car. On the other hand, max was faultless, but still couldnt have won the championship in anything but the redbul.

@@askeladden450 Yep, the chassis are made from the ground up to extract the most from the top driver, then they fiddle with the settings to get the second driver as comfortable as possible. Fans of other series have a hard time understanding the full impact a constructor has on a driver's lap times.

By his own admission Newey has a consulting role at RB at the moment.

I reckon that if he goes to another team, it will be Aston Martin. "Here you go, have all the money, go build a hypercar, stay in Europe, input what you want into the F1 team"

Crazy!!! They say winning cures all drama or turmoil in a sports franchise except at Redbull 🙃 . You would think that all these titles would make people forget drama within the team.

All good companies try to future proof their set up and not be dependent on a single employee (even the owner). For Horner to change the set up so it is not entirely dependent on Newey is essential to future proof the team.

This is not new.

I'd love to see him head to Ferrari but surely the likely destination is Aston. The continued working with Honda, his previous with the design of the Valkyrie when AM and RB had that partnership. I imagine Papa Stroll will throw limitless money at Newey and likely give him the technical freedom to explore other projects outside of F1. Feels like a no brainer to me. But the lure of the red cars - and if they could also give Newey the same technical freedom. Tempting. Imagine if the follow-up to the follow-up of the LaFerrari was a Newey design?

My money is on home stepping aside from the F1 team and work on the RB17. He was once disinterested with continuing on at Red Bull once before and Horner swayed him to continue on, by having hiked head up the Aston Valkyrie development. He likes working on road cars and maybe this could open up a whole branch of Red Bull road cars in the future. I’d love to see that.

Everyone is going to try to predict where he goes, personally I think its really a toss up. Everyone is going to offer him incredibly lucrative offers.

Why include the drivers championships in his stats? Surely constructors only is a more insightful stat given his contribution?

Am I the only that consider that Horner became detrimental to RB at this stage? I mean, all this power struggle + reputation risks have clearly made proper performance people like Adrian and the Verstappens unhappy and willing to consider other options

The dynasty was likely to be over in 2026 anyways, it's gonna be tough for RBPT to produce the best engine on the grid on their first try even with Ford's help against the likes of Honda, Mercedes and Ferrari. Even Audi has some serious hybrids pedigree. May as well cash in now while the team is at its prime. Horner in more power would make some ridiculous cash from it, not to mention the ego stroking, even if RBR goes to shit a few years from now, so from his POV it's totally worth it and no one can really stop him since the Thai's don't really give a shit about the RBR team's success.

Agree. It seems that for some months every week some “informal” news about the time is published, always putting pressure on the team. Than there was the chance to hit Horner with his affair, someone is still putting a lot of energy to keep all this fire burning, trying to really destroy the team. Others teams cannot even be investigated or cited in an investigation. Funny.

Jos and Fiona made the false complaint abt Horner. They were sharing the bed together… Jos wanted more power in RBR and wanted Horner out. Jos is the one behind the emails too…and the OTHERWISE MAX GOES TO MERC….and all the press leaks were by Jos…. Its ALL JOS. And Toto is simply using it to try and destabilize RBR….. but Horner is staying strong. He keeps the lead and focus for the team. The complaint was proven false. Horner is innocent. Fiona even tried to use the trial social media…. Its all been Jos…

@@Redlingstein I think it is shocking how little credit Newey gets by RB fans. Newey is probably the best aerodynamic engineer F1 has ever seen and he was vital in designing the current regs car. Those developments started way back even before the title race between Hamilton and Verstappen. Since then they maybe got him out of the main F1 deal, but we haven’t seen the first car he wasn‘t involved yet. That will be 2026. Also the development gap to any other team can probably be linked to Newey. We will see what happens with the new regs, but discrediting Newey like you do is why F1 fans can’t really take RB fans serious.

He reportedly said no to Aston... (Unless the offer gets bumped to the Billions) So I'm picking Ferrari with Charles and Lewis. pick 2 is Audi with Hulk and Sainz

Ferrari seems like the obvious choice. It's the only big-name team he's never worked with (technically he hasn't worked for Merc as a works outfit but he did when they were supplying McLaren). He can work with Lewis, a driver he respects, and he can spend his final years in F1 working in sunny Italy instead of drizzly Milton Keynes. Seems like a pretty good deal all round.

I hope he joins the Aston Martin WEC team, as the Aston Martin Endurance Team is now in the process of homologating the Valkyrie for the 2025 season of WEC.

His 65 now he could be just simply retiring from all motor sport entirely or just leaving f1 entirely, tho if he does go to another team wow good on him.

Is it me or is Horner's body language a bit off at 5:25 when Newey is speaking? He seems embarrassed.

It would be spectacular if we went back to Williams. Its easy to go to a front of the pack team and win...but to bring a team that is absolutely atrocious back from the dead and lead them to a championship would cement his legend. Plus the storybook ending would be amazing.

So begins the end of RBR’s dominance. Losing a star car designer and egos and politics bursting at the seems. There is a famous corporate saying that “no one is irreplaceable” but no successful organisation survives internal wars for long.

Quite rightly a lot of plaudits for Newey and what he has done with the teams he has worked for. Outstanding championship success. But what's not mentioned is what happens to the teams that he leaves, which is almost as important. Both Williams and McLaren tanked after Newey left and of the two it's only McLaren that has recovered, and that's taken them 15 years and the financial support of their commercial arm. So for a team to lose Newey is a double whammy. Not only does the new Newey team become stronger, but the departing team becomes weaker, an exponential impact on the team he leaves. RBR could be in the wilderness for some years if he goes....

"Gardening leave" isn't something that starts after the end of a contract, it happens during the contract, typically during the notice period because the existing employer does not want the leaver having access to any further information that could be beneficial to a competitor. The leaver is paid their normal wages to stay at home (gardening) but held to their contract duration to prevent them starting earlier with the competitor. A non-compete clause in a contract is a different story, these extend beyond employment but that has not been mentioned.
