Hwy bud - maybe you can mock the pieces together with tacks and then take the pipes to a muffler shop and have them weld them. I will likely be in some kind of similar boat without a tig. I was going to take it to a local muffler shop to have them finish weld everything. Good to hear you man.

Sounds like the collector could be 304 stainless and the pipe is 409 stainless. These can be welded with ER309 wire by TIG or MIG. The "recommended" shielding gas for ER309 wire is the tri-mix of 90% Helium/7.5%Argpn/2.5%CO2. But 75% Argon/25% CO2 can be used in a pinch for exhaust work. There will be some carbon pickup in the weld from the CO2 gas, but not enough to make a big loss in corrosion resistance or cause a brittle weld. You will notice some black sooty deposits but they are easily removed by a hand wire brush. You may want to get some scrap pieces of 304 pipe and 409 pipe to practice on first to get the voltage and wire feed seed settings down and hone your skills a bit. I would not use the ER70S-6 wire for this since it will rust and will be more brittle and may eventually crack.

Thanks for the info, I will probably just use 75% 25% as I don't want to get the tri-mix for just a couple of welds.

The pipe and the header are different flange types. Cutting and welding would work. You could mock the pipe up mark it so it can be realigned and have a welding shop put it together. I know the life taking over thing all so well.

Looks like that manifold is made for a flat 3 bolt flange gasket and not a tapered seat flange...Weld away Sam or mock it up and take it to an exhaust shop to seal it up for you..

Sam, your exhaust should have a sleeve that slips inside of the exhaust pipe and at the same time holds the donut so that you bolt the pipe up to the ram horn NO CUTTING NEEDED

If I'm not mistaken the donut should be above the manifold flange. Have seen the exhaust pipe with the built in donut, kind of like a brake line bubble flair. There's a lower grade of stainless steel with carbon that is able to have a magnet stick to it.

Look at the video again. I should have heard you say the manifold was 2 1/2 and pipe was 2, there is your answer pipe is wrong size for manifold. When you put donut in manifold it should stick up out of it halfway, so when you bolt the pipe the flange will seal. If I'm not mistaken 327 high performance engines used 2 1/2 while 250 hp and down used 2 inch manifolds. Hope that helps. Don't think that a larger donut will be the cure unless flange is large enough to seal. I'd call the pipe supplier and see if there's a larger pipe. Good luck Sam

This Magnaflow exhaust kit is a 2 1/2" pipe system but they reduced it to 2" and flared the end where it ties into the manifold. It works fine with my original exhaust manifold with the donut but it wont work with the new manifolds I bought cause they are 2 1/2" outlet. I guess they made the kit that way thinking you are going to stay with the original exhaust manifold. I am also doing away withe the heat riser valve.

@@ClassicCarOverhaul just remembere you're going to need to make up for the heat riser. The pipe on the right side has to be longer. My only concern with using the flange is alignment there is no wiggle room. As the engine lifts on take off the pipe will move . Can't remember any car where the header pipe bolts up flat, they all have some kind of bubble or donut. Just something to think about.

Did you check with the manifold supplier about what they recommend for the connection to the header pipe? Those headers sure will look nice when you get it all together. I would think you could find an appropriate gasket or donut to fit your application. Try a muffler shop...

You should be able to attach manifolds in place, then attach exhaust pipes with gaskets, at that time you could spot weld pipes to flanges on pipes, until sealed all the way around.

The magnaflow exhaust kit is #16724, the exhaust manifolds are from Speedway Motors part #9300332 with 2 1/2" outlet. The original manifolds which I have and are 2" outlet will work with this magnaflow exhaust kit but I wanted new ones and I could only find 2 1/2" outlet.
