Exception Bias in Our Creative Life | RPG Mainframe

Ойындар

Our brains are wired to take special note of the unusual. Sounds handy, right? In fact, it contributes to a distorted view of the actual world. This podcast explores how being self-aware of your own exception bias can help create a more holistic sense of creative life.

Great episode! The author Steven Pressfield has a few books about just this things- creativity is more work than we often appreciate, and grinding away at something mundane leads to the big break throughs.

Most things people consider to be a novelty are often just a reskin, tropes and reimagining things we have already experienced. While producing a high quality wheel is overlooked in favor of dreams about reinventing the wheel. The other day I had a friend refusing to believe the Granblue games were just reskinning Tolkien races when the names were literally just a rehash of how someone in Japan would pronounce them in English. Elven, "Eruvn" = Erune... Halfling, "Havring" = Harvin... Dwarf, "Dorafu" = Draph... :^) that's all the novelty you need. It reminds me of the trick where you just change the name of a monster in the monster manual and nothing else.

Human memory is inaccurate, we are all unreliable narrators to ourselves. I would argue that the consistent observation you are suggesting needs to be collected prospectively. Write a little score out of ten in the corner of every page you work on. This is how happy you were doing that work day after day.

Spiders Georg, who eats 10,000 spiders every day, is a statistical anomaly, and should not be counted.

Is IcRPG 3rd Edition a real thing for 2024 or did you record this podcast a while ago and refer to the master edition? Serious Question 🤓

@@Runehammer1 No, the idea that you can eschew novelty in favor of a greater focus on quality. “You can get a lot out of a war between elves and dwarves…” Yawn.

@@user-yl9pc5dz7c the entire thesis is not unmade by one example you may not enjoy. Cutting grass is mundane, but can be a vast source of creativity, imho

Yawn? Doing something tread well vs. something novel half assed is the comparison. Elves vs. dwarves can be amazing if handled with dedication. I think novelty used as a seasoning in the familiar is welcomed, and total banana wagon gonzo is fun on occasion. I’d also say that jerking the wheel constantly for the sake of jerking the wheel gets old. There’s a reason that the hero’s journey pops up as much as it does in literature. (I know that example has some holes, but I think it still works.)

@user-yl9pc5dz7c There are always new ways of looking at well trodden ground. "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes." - Marcel Proust.
