Nick Calandra is gas lighting. You can see it how he does his little smile everytime he tells an obvious lie. He thinks he's actually getting away with it and that we can't tell just what kind of person he really is. Never saw Nick Calandra before this, but I've seen enough to know that he's one of the people that needs to be gatekept.

I don't think Razor would have entirely agreed to it regardless especially if it was a spontaneous debate sprung at him without prior knowledge and against his will. On livestreams he's been vocal against random live debates, describing them as being basically pointless. They don't facilitate any really valid discussion other than trying to own and namecall your opponent, and whatever channel it ends up on will just take the side that the viewer is already subscribed to, so what's the point? The Rageaholic would likely much rather put out a proper video response than join a live tomato throwing contest.

Dude's is literally The Actman 2.0. Gaming is now the most influential medium nowadays so all corruption will migrate into it even egregious politics. The movie industry fall because of it. That's why they're buying Japanese Media nowadays because pf it's influencial position in the industry. You can never be a middle ground on a culture war. "Trying to be middle ground" is different from blatant ignorance. Gaming is not safe for propaganda and it's the best time to made it one with the people associated with it. They never talked about Indies that much because it's an OG IP compared to a direction that was subverted for a reason on a well known IP. As Henry Cavill had said "criticizing is passion".

@@PaulieMcCoy He's access and trying to save face. "I just wanna play games" is like "it's just games", he doesn't care he just wanna consume, he's always blaming the business but the business itself is promoting such behavior like Blackrock is forcing on people. It's fine to play but he needs to see that the industry just changed. I owned all consoles since 2600 and play all sorts of games. I know something had changed for years now, it takes a passionate gamer to know that. The gaming awards became celebrity infested and political messaging event from trailers, ads to presentations and awarding speeches. It literally became the Oscars. We don't care about new games being DEI, it's their choice to cater for that "modern audiences" amd it's not immune to criticism. The main concern here is the established IP that don't usually do that is now doing it. Him saying there's "nothing happening" is like there's nothing wrong in the current administration. Also Craig's event is the real clubhouse. It's gate kept for people that actually don't appreciate games. You just don't open the border to immigrants that'll ruin your economy. You invite people on the side of the corporation is just a recipe for treacherous behavior. There's plenty of different opinionated votes without relying on people that is not aware of the current situation of the industry. You invite candy crush people they'll vote for candy crush.

Otherwise he wouldn't have agreed to come on the show and express his dislike in your idea, and poke holes in it. I think he's trying to play both sides of the fence too. He knows exactly what the modern audience is. With him saying "Don't you Want To reach a wider audience" you know the audience he is talking about. Said this multiple times on Twitter, and I will say it here: People like Nick and Alyssa have the same vocabulary as the hosts here, but they operate with a different dictionary than the rest of us. A perfect example is the verbal nuiance around "regular" gamers. Craig and Nick go back and forth about that definition, and you can see Nick saying is not so many words that he and his group get to decide what is regular and what is not. Then he pulls the motte and bailey move of "I don't disagree with your awards show. I just disagree with the messaging." Look at the question about "his audience" being regular gamers. He's playing the inclusivity card to virtue signal to his audience that he's on their side in enemy territory. It's a classic dialectical process. Play in the grey area of words in an attempt to catch your opponent in a gotcha, and then attack that nuiance. The key to picking this up is the use of the phrase "It's just" or "I'm just" or some variant. Like they are trying to understand, but, in reality, Nick is playing in the margins by gatekeeping what the awards show should be if it wanted to be legitimate in the eyes of legacy gaming media. Attack this by being direct, bold, and not apologizing for word choice. Call it out directly. Demand that he define his terms and then use those terms against him. Again, he uses the same vocabulary but has a much different dictionary.

I've noticed this a lot in recent years with social and political discourse. Two people from opposite sides of the argument will say the same words, but you can tell that they define those things completely differently. In essence, they're speaking two different languages, and as such cannot communicate properly. When you analyze the intended meaning between both sides' use of that given word or phrase, you can better understand where the two are coming from.

The thing Nick doesn't realize is that writing suffers in most games, movies, tv shows where the DEI pandering elements have been made a priority. When a site like Kotaku or IGN write an article about a game if they mention the character's color/race, sexual orientation/identity, or gender and this information has no real relevance and/or has been changed from previous iteration, then DEI has been inserted. If whole articles are written to talk about the DEI and/or it's mentioned first in an article, then those elements were probably the priority. As such the writing suffers because it doesn't get then attention it needs.

The whole focus on more "story" in games is one of the main reasons gaming is in the toilet now. Who needs "stories" in games? Especially in stuff like Beat 'em up's, Racing- or Sports-games. And even shooters didn't need stories in the older ones.

Nick asks of Kabrutus "what authority does he have other than he put together a steam group" the same can be said of access media types and "journalists" such as himself. What authority do they have other than they get paid to share their opinions? If anything the access media has less authority because they get paid by publishers to do the reviews so have pressure to review positively plus they often end up just being glorified bloggers like with Kotaku, IGN or The Escapist. Also he says that he doesn't understand the "taking games back", but he doesn't understand this because he's one of the people gaming needs taking back from. And "I'm not out of touch I ran the Escapist" is a redundant statement and is like saying "I'm not out of touch with the poor people, I ran a company replacing affordable housing with big mansions"

While it sounds ideal, the reality is that the world is not like that, and different people have different likes/dislikes and varying degrees of tolerance... Government will never be perfect... This may sound ridiculous, but even if a powerful Alien appeared and threatened the world to get along or perish, some of humanity to include governments might try to shift things towards a given ideal, but you can never 100% control the masses in the ways you want, even under threat of doom...

There are plenty of people who just like to screw things up for others; you'll find them in every GTA V server. There is also the possibility of mass influence campaigns by activists. A comparatively high fee means that those types either can't afford enough votes to make a serious impact, or if they can we're the ones laughing...all the way to the bank, and then all the way to the budget for the event next year.

Nick is being extremely disingenuous, he knows that DEI as a corporate practice is a problem but refuses to say so because his corporate masters wouldn't allow it. Zero respect for someone who pretends to have principles but is so willing to throw them aside to make a buck.

1:26:18 yes, there's all these indi games coming out all the time, and NO ONE IS PLAYING THEM. they are not the main stream, they are not in focus and most people have no interest in them. so they are not relevant other than curiosity.

And most of them are copies of older, better games. And also a lot of them are of the "artsy" variety that mostly appeal to hipsters and not real gamers.

Hi, just one thing that was left unclear to me watching this, dunno if it was ever mentioned and perhaps I missed it... Did Nick Calandra used to run the Escapist and has he been on both sides of things?

That's a great question! I *think* Nick Calandra used to run the Escapist, but what I'm also unclear on is whether he has been on both sides of things. I might need to rewatch the stream a few more times to figure that out.

@@imjust_a If you do rewatch the stream to be sure please take a note of a time stamp when Nick mentions whether or not he used to run the Escapist!

The Calendra segment was quite physically painful to watch. I've these types throwing fallacies like bills at a gentleman's club before, but the level at which Nick was doing so, you'd think he's trying to maintain an SSS rating on the style meter.

I had him figured out when he asked "even people you dislike" on who can vote , its always the same "mean girl in grade school" way of rhetoric of the 100 flat IQ people. literally seen one seen all with at best personal modifiers like speech cadence for example like destiny
