Thank you for the insightful video on Qualia vs Narrative. It's a fascinating topic, especially in the context of TTRPGs and the role of a game master. As a GM, I've learned that letting go of my expectations regarding players' emotional reactions is crucial. We might orchestrate a scene expecting specific emotions or reactions, but players often engage in ways we didn't anticipate. Their unique perspectives and interactions can surprise us with genuine displays of emotion and depth. It's a reminder that our job isn't to dictate how they should feel but to set the stage for their stories to unfold. Letting go of control is challenging, but it opens up a world of free-form roleplay that's rewarding for both GMs and players. Thanks again for sparking this reflection.

I will often ask my players "How does this situation make your character feel?" . Also, I love ALL Runehammer videos!

I love this topic and it made me realize that I prefer to run qualia games. Not just because I don’t have time for regular games in a campaign, but because what I like about GM-ing is invoking feelings into my players. The movie The Lighthouse is a good example of a “quaila” horror movie I think. The “narrative” is just “one or possibly both men on an island lose their mind” but oh boy does that movie invoke some emotion! (and it doesn’t really have any jump scares)

It's illustrative that in describing the qualia of a taco, you described things that many people don't associate with tacos. Lettuce and cheese at taco bell, sure, but the all best tacos I've ever had have meat, onions, cilantro, hot chile sauce, and lime. If the qualia you shoot for doesn't match the players' expectations then it will fall flat.

Listening to this over several days definitely left me feeling this conversation went over my head. What do I take away from this, other than that it is hard to get players to engage emotionally, but how do I as a game master break down that ironic distance players put up between the events of the game and themselves? I do not know.

WOW Runehammer using pretentious words to show his collage degree. Qualia... so sophisticated. Qualia means experience in relation to consciousness, nothing more. Just use experience instead. Your "off-limitness" is not required and quite a bucked of bs.
