Don’t steal the struggle and respect the silence. Players need a moment to digest what’s happened and the struggle of working the situation is its own reward. Patience, as in actively evaluating what’s happening for the right moment to act is far from passive.

Interesting conversation! Player “agency “ (feeling like They maintain a sense of control- more pull than push) is a difficult edge to maintain- we can all tell stories of “too much push” - but rarely do players feel like they have “too much pull” in a game

I think the lack of confidence of new players requires more push

How about a video on the concept of a GM Repertoire? Repertoire is a French word that means a stock of rehearsed pieces of performative art that a performer has memorized and is prepared to perform. For a singer, this means songs you know so well from start to finish, you can just perform them if I were to stick an instrument in your hands and say "go!" For a dancer, it's dances. For a comedian, it's jokes. For an actor, it might be characters you can portray, accents, and voices. For a public speaker, it might be famous quotes. For a referee, it's the rules. For a poet, it's poems. For a storyteller, it might be a collection of tales. For a GM, it might include all of the above except for dancing. Do GMs have a repertoire? Do they need one? What goes into a GM repertoire? Would we benefit if we tried to develop a GM repertoire? How can a GM build one? Are RPGs things of such transience that one would not develop a repertoire? Is there something of value here for RPG Mainframe to provide?

I’d say the repertoire is knowing what to do when players behave in unexpected ways and you have to improvise. For instance if they seek out an NPC I didn’t have ready, I’ll: 1. Buy me some time 2. Envision the NPC and writing down a few characteristics 3. Think about how I’ll present them to players (voice, mannerisms) If your a good GM you’ll just do that on the fly as the PCs are talking, if you aren’t as experienced, you’d might ask for a time-out Another part of a GM repertoire is how to prevent or handle conflicts between your players (including you).

I like the comment about giving space for your players to enter your location. Solid advice

Runehammer: the last Nar-Bender. Some of the best sessions I’ve been a part of were ones where the narration was bent, sometimes damn near broken in two.

Re: Player description-give them forewarning that you want to do this and let them opt out. Otherwise your invitation to co-create can feel like an ambush.

Really interesting way to look at a DM behavior and a good tool to be less pushy :D

Thanks for highlighting the Push-Pull dynamic in GMing! It's a reminder of the balance needed between guiding the story and embracing player input. Initiatives like Session 0s, debriefs, and regular feedback are key to crafting a shared adventure that's fun for all.

I was listening to politics and I thought: 'Man, these people are saying some really idiotic things. I mean I don't dislike them, but the stuff they're saying is stupid'. So i switched to RUNEHAMMER
