Love this advice but gotta say, listening to content from The Plague Years is surprisingly hard.

Players will invest if you offer them something they want. Find out what they want, put that in the game where they can earn it somehow, and you can create the player investment you want as a DM. Now sometimes players will lie, and sometimes players will have multiple desires that aren't equal. Keep an eye and an ear open for when the players are talking, when they are distracted, when they are happy, when they are sad. I've had an entire group of 6 people crying when talking to an NPC and I've had them bored out of their minds on their phones. It's not a problem that players are distracted, that is feedback telling you that what they're doing and what they're earning isn't what they want. If you're going to take notes, take note of their investment so you can offer them the experiences they want.

    1. Mooks 2. Pass through dmg 3. Dungeon World multiple opponent rules! 1. mass enemies have 1 hp 2. Each swing takes down as many enemies as dmg in rolled, 3 or 4 max. 3. Enemies roll one attack roll 1 dmg for 1 enemy add +1 for each extra enemy attacking.

This guy gets it. When running a d20 game i always use groups as I roll once, every extra enemy grants +1 hit and damage upto a max of +5. Hurting groups means damage always carries over to kill a max of 5. You deal 11 damage to the horde of Goblins. you kill 3 and one is holding on for dear life (although i usually just round up and have the 4th killed). Done it for years and is great. If there's a huge mob, the players are just rolling to not die. Knave 2e also has some good army battle rules that I just found.

There was a game I was running for Runejammer last year in which the players mentioned something, and I should have run with it, and I didn't. The game was still fun, but I think if I had been more flexible as a GM in the moment, it would have marked a real leveling up of my game-mastery. That is my work these days - hearing those mentions and using them not just for next session, but for the current one.

@Runehammer1 - Please do a video on why fantasy games generally have a greater longevity than cyberpunk/sci-fi games and, again, generally, why fantasy games are more fun. I love cyberpunk and sci-fi, with fantasy always being my last choice, but people/players just love fantasy games more.

easy answer! the future is nowhere near as free, as simple, as green, as nostalgic. fantasy gives us grass and quiet and mystery… sci fi is intense!

sorry, as much as i'm interested in your podcast and especially this subject the random chipmunk voices and introduction simply put me off, not to crap on your work or efforts, i understand how much effort goes into a podcast or radio show, but, i'm not here to listen to stupid gimmicks, i'm here for the actual subjects being discussed, if you keep up with the current format, what might be a good idea is to timestamp your different topic areas in the description allowing people to skip right to it.

@@Runehammer1 if you like them then that’s totally cool, I listened to about 15 minutes before I noped out, your deliverance is fine and pleasant to listen to for sure, but it’s just those factors unfortunately drove me off, I’m sure there are people out there who like it too you clearly have your own audience and target demographic, your mail bag bit was great, truly great, but in my mind to it gimmicks as fun as they are might be driving some people away, one man’s humble opinion. Like I said I’m by no means trying to attack you or bring you down or diminish your efforts (making a pod cast is still a lot of effort) so I hope my comments aren’t in anyway harmful. Tackling the subject of players becoming invested in your game isn’t easy so I was naturally curious. You have a great podcast here and I wish you well in your future endeavours
