2 reasons I can think I'd want glowing dice: 1: so if they roll under a couch by mistake, they can be easily found. 2: so you can avoid stepping on a d4 in your bare feat in a dark room and taking 1d4 piercing damage.

Deja vu They only roll forever if you put a lot of force behind them :P. Also, i too own a d100, but i use that when rolling for treasure or rewards, when the d100 comes out, you know good things follow it :P. Another thing, using a d100 for treasure is good because it means that, if i wanted my players to feel more involved with loot, i can roll the dice across the table to the player because of how well it rolls.

I’d like to add one more thing to the list: People who throw the dice. They constantly throw the dice, bounces off the table, hits a player, bounces off the floor, kills a cat, tumbled down the expressway, buys a cup of coffee, gets late for work, comes home to a nagging Wife and finally rests on a bed showing the number 2.

I do wonder why people cheat in D&D, It's a game with no distinct win state. Rules that say that fun or cool things are allowed to break them. a (good) DM that is willing to accomodate different types of play. And a (good) DM that can keep a challenge at a fun level. Just rolling a bit higher has no impact on the game AT ALL on the long run. Worst case you're gonna be the last person to find a magic item to balance your character to the group.

@@yusthavinfun I know it was months ago since you commented, but I have to say: What if you never hit or do anything amazing because you have such bad luck you never roll higher than 50% of the die thrown? No more than 10 on a d20, no more than 6 on a d12, etc? Since your character can't do anything from such poor rolls, where's the fun for you? Everything you try will fail, so why bother doing anything at all? Persuasion, always fail. Perception, also fail. I haven't cheated but I have to say it's really tempting when everyone gets to do cool stuff while your character repeated fails at things he's supposed to be skilled at. +7 to stealth? Sorry, your rolls are so bad you will never succeed in sneaking. +9 to hit? Sorry, AC for the boss is 18 and you can't seem to roll above an 8. Enjoy being the dead weight of the party! I have actually had a DM give me a magic weapon that uses a bonus action to turn any miss into a hit because I went 3 sessions failing 85% of my attacks. As a monk... with +7 to hit and 3 attacks per turn... for 10 turns... until the party killed the thing I was trying to hit... with an AC of 17...

As a DM that rarely has to be a tyrant about dice and dice rolls (my table is pretty well chilled and mature about the subject) I do keep several sets of dice extra in my DMing kit, for several reasons: 1. Players forget things 2. Guests usually are not as well prepared as table regulars 3. The Laura Bailey-style Dice Jail is a real thing, and it gets full some nights 4. While I have 3 sets of dice that are my absolute favorites, It's nice to mix things up occasionally. 5. If ever I encounter a set of dice brought by a player that we suspect may not be a fair set of dice, and we discover through testing (salt water buoyancy/roation for example) then we have one or more sets of dice that are known to be fair already waiting in the wings, to keep the game going. Spare sets of dice are a good thing

TIL: Someone's peed in Guy's Cheerio's again, and he wants to live in Ancient Rome. BTW, Guy, you've missed my one major peeve with "dice rolling": The Table Slapper. This is someone who picks up the die/dice needed, and without as much as a ceremonial shake, slaps them down on the table. It's not a coin flip, and even in a coin flip, it's at least tossed in the air, caught after several revolutions, and then slapped down on someone's hand.

Is that just when they don't shake the dice before doing it, or is it that method of rolling that bothers you? I've been wondering if it's generally considered acceptable to roll that way, as long as you attempt to randomize them with a good shake. For practical purposes, it'll allow me to get everything in a central area and eliminate any dice falling off the table or getting lost, so it would be nice if I could do it. I don't know if there are any issues with randomness.

Not infected So long as you shake it, and don't look at it before slapping it down, it really shouldn't affect the probability. However, it is a way that can allow a skilled person to cheat, so your dm may not allow it. If you make a tent over the die with your hands, so people can hear it roll to a stop, that can be a good way to contain your rolls.

  • @kirkwagner461

I should have read before adding my own, as this is one of my peeves. even if you shake them, RPG polyhedrals are so big that you don't give them a good tumble in your hand before the slap. And, as mentioned, it intro's a means of cheating. Not hard to pinch the d20 on the number you want and rattle the other dice before the slap.

Personally, I love letting someone use my dice because I feel like ive added something to their roll. I feel like you have to read the situation before making the assumption that people are OK with their dice being touched or borrowed. If someone is worried about their dice being unintentionally mixed in with another set of dice, and forever lost, that could be a valid reason to not want someone to borrow their dice. Most of my dice are not part of a set, and could be easily mixed up if used with another set of mixed dice. If everyone has their dice in easy to distinguish sets, and I'm the only one who brought a few pounds of random dice, than I have no issue with people using the extras. And then there are some players who are just superstitious and don't want their luck to rub off if someone else uses their dice.

Hey, i think all dnd players have some kind of superstition they follow when it comes to their die rolls. One of my friends always sits at a specific spot at the table we normally use and if he arrives late and doesn't get that chair or if we're playing in another location, he will move around the table constantly and if he keeps getting bad rolls he'll start to roll on the floor saying and i quote "I need a level surface". I guess he's implying that his normal spot is the only place on the table that's actually level. Another person i used to play with ( i don't any more) used to buy a set of dice, roll them and if the die were coming out bad too often he would line up all of his other dice so that they could watch and he would smash the bad die with a hammer...because i guess a public execution would frighten the other dice into rolling well. Me, before i actually start a game i roll the die several times until i'm getting more good rolls then bad and if anybody asks why i tell them "i'm getting the bad rolls out of the way before we start"

Fortunately or not depending on how you see it, itsq uite bad because it often ends on 1 which is just next to 19. I guess rolling a dice one hundred time can give you a hint on its quality, and if it is obviously loaded toward some bad value, better keep it for thoses systems in which low rolls are good, or just throw the die away

Whew, those dice you showed off at the start, beautiful. I know someone who bought perfectly clear dice to give to his players when they forgot theirs. They only forgot them once after that. I heard a story about a guy who picks up dice as they roll, and everyone playing knew they were cheating as they'd constantly get 18+ on all their rolls. So one guy passed him a d12 for a d20 check, and he was like "got a 20" and they were like you got a 20, on a d12? The worst is when people roll multiple attacks at once and don't resolve the damage until all their attacks are resolved, and then the last monster dies on the first attack and they wasted rolling a d20 another 3 or 4 times. Getting an 8 on your perception check, what a scrub :P

All the dice have a dragon wrapping around each of the dice around the number, making it harder to read. Suffice it to say, really regret having bought those dice, especially for 12 bucks.

I always hated that about school and work, and about some of my friends too. I would read in class and otherwise it's listening, either to audio books or to music, I need them to focus and stay calm, without them I can't focus and become prone to rapid (and often severe) changes in mood. I may roll my dice 50 times before the DM says "Last we left our heros" But once the game starts, if the dice leaves your hand its final. Quite frankly most of those irritating habits never even crossed my mind. The only onne I feel a need to comment on is the one about superstition. concerning others touching your dice. As far as I am concerned, it is more about those borrowed dice for a while not rolling well for their owner as if being grumpy for having been handed over to someone else. Ultimately it is just superstition and I am aware of that, yet to me that is just a minor quirk and nothing to get upset about. Just because I prefer not to lend the dice I am using to others does not mean I have no spare dice which I have no such qualms about handing out. So basically I have one set of dice which I am using myself and then a bunch of spare dice to be used by whoever needs additional dice for any reason. Also it is entirely possible that for some people this has nothing to do with the dice themselves, but rather some concious or subconscious phobia of germs or something of the like. Those things do exist and while the other displayed habits can indeed be irritating, this particular habit to me is an absolute non-issue.

I often run solo games - solo as in I am a GM and have one player or vice versa - and when I'm in a group and have that kind of dice fiddler on the table... It is just irritating for the most part, especially when the GM just told someone to roll whatever skill check, but sometimes it makes me want to throw something at the face of said individual. Not that that has ever happened before. At least not with something hard. Or thrown in a way that could injure :D One of the players in a group with me as a GM had one of those heretics in it. Common sentences at the table were "I didn't ask for any skill check" or "What did you roll there?". We usually played on a rather small table, so it was cramped to oblivion. One can imagine that the players weren't all that happy with him flinging his dice all over it all the time.

I have had the same experience. I used a set of dice in tabletop and I roll generally really good (Luck? I use a cup for rolling, so no cheating is involved even subconscious). Once an opponent called for cheating and I shared the dice with him. He rolled constantly bad, and I still rolled very good. Sometimes this is akward, when you constantly make good rolls.

There are a very rare minority of people who can roll crooked dice without the dice ever being tampered with. It's often down to some complex sleight of hand and, in some cases, is often completely subconscious. These people are pretty rare 'though and I'm fairly sure I've only ever met one of them (and a second who claimed he could be proved to be a fairly average roller).

In my experience, there are a certain few dice that "tend" well for me... One D20, I've carried for years now, rolled nothing higher than 8 for more than six YEARS... AND another oddball D20 rolled absolutely nothing from my hand except a 20... for three years... some tens of thousands of rolls, too... I got curiously driven about the matter... SO those particular two, along with a small selection of other "old buddies" (?) I carry separate from the bag... I have no problems lending them... AND I do admit to the weird trends to GM's when I show up to a table for the first sessions... That's only fair (in my opinion)... AND for the record... No. The "oddballs" didn't seem to do a damn thing for anyone but me... Further, any other dice I rolled seemed to be completely and ordinarily random... Occasional trends happen with dice, as with any number-generating tech'... high or low. ;o)

I used to have a little red d6 (known as "Little Reddy" which mostly rolled 1's, 3's, 5's and 6's with a heavy tendency towards 5. It was clearly hand made with the holes drilled into it and wasn't even remotely a perfect cube. It wasn't used often because it felt like a loaded die (even 'though, in this case, it was probably just badly made). I wonder what happened to it. Haven't seen it in years now.

I have a single metal d6 that is really fun to hold and use, but it never rolls above a 3 for me. Trying to prove my point about the die once upon a time, I rolled it 15 times in a row and got nothing over a 3. Handed it to a buddy, he rolled 5's and 6's over and over, another guy had a normal spread, and when they handed it back to me it went back to staying below 3. I never use that d6 because of how poorly it rolls for me.

the dice towers i don’t get mad about at my particular table. we get distracted by everything, dice towers, really cute dogs, you name it. we return to the game after a minute and as long as nobody is interrupting each other everything is fine. those momentary distractions also help maintaining focus when it actually matters. our sessions tend to go towards 7 hours, i‘m not mad when we are all distractedfor 5 minutes every so often.

When i was younger i was the GM for a group of 2-3 friends. I strongly suspected one constantly cheated and I did in fact find out years later that my suspicions were spot on. What this player did not know (nor any of the other players), was that ultimately, I had complete control at all times. If I wanted their story to follow a specific path, or for some specific event to happen, I found a way to make it happen. And i did it in a way that seemed perfectly natural. There was nothing any of them could have done to stop me, including some roll of the die. Thats the power of a truly great game master.

I roll multiple dice together because, frequently, I roll the damage roll and the "to hit" dice together to save rolling both motions. There isn't any confusion as to what they are for; I just feel my rolls are more random when I roll multiple dice. If I miss then I don't bother reading the damage dice. Fairly straightforward for me. I don't think there is anything particularly wrong with rolling multiple dice, as long as A) The dice cannot be mistaken for one another and B) They are all relvent for the same roll. It doesn't work if the to hit and to damage dice are of the same type. I do have a custom with my crit brass dice in that they are my bros. Usually the critical injuries inflicted on myself are very low (when the GM rolls them) and high for the targets. One time a player rolled the dice to try and save his own life and he rolled so high that he instantly died. Thankfully it was a relatively new character the player hadn't got too invested too, and I kinda joked that they had "recharged their luck from the latest sacrifice. XD" That being said, isn't a serious superstion, I just pick them up, roll them. Chuckle.

In the games I run, it seems more suspenseful to roll your d20, then roll for damage if you hit. It seems less fun if everyone is rolling all their dice at one and shouting out numbers, generally at the same time.

In my group, there is a dice that we joke that it hates a player in particular, because when the GM used it for the enemies attacking a specific player, he was only getting numbers above 16 (it was a d20) for the whole combat and for everyone else all numbers appeared, and when that player tried to use that dice he immediately got a 1.

I am a DungeonMaster, and I once had a player who built a dice tower in the middle of combat. When the tower fell over, many of the figures on the battlemat were knocked over as well. Since it was in a cave setting, I just said there was a cave-in, and all affected players and creatures took 3d10 bludgeoning damage. The players were only level 1 or 2 at the time, and the dice-architect was one of those killed in the collapse. After that, without a cleric the campaign fell apart. So many, spellcasters, but not one of them thought to learn a healing spell or pack some medical supplies.

Well... It make him forget several important details on the topic: *(1)* Metal dice are heavier than plastic dice. - Thus they are more noisy when rolled. *(2)* Metal dice have sharper edges than plastic dice. - Thus they are more likely to leave scratch marks at the table. *(3)* Metal dice can have nickel in them. - That can be (real!) irritating for those with nickel allergy. Now he directs this at the players, thus skipping that the real cause of bad dice behaviour is more often the GM's fault than it is the players's! Simple ways for the GM to reduce these problems are: *(1)* Reduce the amount of dice rolls called for. - And a nice side effect: It increases the quality of the role play! (Less distractions, which dice rolls causes, interrupting the role play.) *(2)* Choose a RPG system that uses less dice rolls. - Again: That increases the role play quality. *(3)* Choose a RPG system that always call for more than one dice rolled at the same time. - As most of peoples bad dice behaviours arise when they have to roll the dice one at a time! *(4)* Choose a PRG system that only uses one type of dice. - Cures the "what dice to use" -problem! *(5)* Have your PCs be in the leading roles. - Dice tower building is a sign of that the player is reduced to a spectator role.

I will say about rolling multiple dice, I allow and encourage players to roll attack and damage at the same time just to speed things along a bit. But that never gets in the way unless you have something like adding a d4 to your attack roll and you roll a d4 for damage, then it's better to roll separately and those situations are obvious.

Y'know I totally get why people do this, but it just bugs me. I don't even really know why. Like I encourage people to roll multiple attacks together, and I am occasionally annoyed when someone rolls damage that requires multiple dice one die at a time. But I just find it unseemly to roll your damage before knowing if you've hit or not. It's weird.

I strongly dislike rolling differently-shaped dice together. Especially pairing a d4 with anything. It strikes me as interfering with their probabilities. Although I should probably start doing it personally for the simple sake of using them to contain each other's movements.
