Evolution of Spanish
From the drum-wielding Paleo-Iberian princesses to the modern Spanish people we know and love, their language has come a long way since Latin, following a rather unique evolution featuring influence from Germanic, Celtic, Latin, other Romances, Semitic and Basque languages.
MIND that this is specifically centred on the Castillian language. In reality, Spain has over a dozen regional languages which all have their own particularities, and this variant was very much born in a Basque bed of influence and only spread artificially under the influence of literature, education and - unfortunately - through General Franco's repression of languages.

Spanish is called "Cervantes' language", and the meaning is quite fucking literal, in this case. Over 300 years ago, Spanish scholars were looking to create the first Spanish Royal Academy Dictionary, and set out to define what was "proper" Spanish and what wasn't. So they had to start unifying the language and dialects somewhere... ... And they chose Don Quixote as their starting point. If it was in that book, it was accepted as "correct Spanish". And then, this was the language that got taught in schools, so the entire Spanish-speaking world kinda agreed to unify under Cervantes' vocabulary. How crazy is that? They call English "Shakespeare's language", but I think it's just for show, and to sound fancy. Cervantes' language is actually _his_ language.

Technically speaking Spanish is older and has much more history than modern English, which is a quite new language in comparison. Spanish dates back to the Romance language after the Roman occupation of the Iberic Peninsula, its linked to the history of the Roman, Phoenician and Punic Empires a well as their dead, lost and long gone languages and has its roots in Celtic-Iberic languages, Latin and Phoenician-Punic dialects… Probably the origin of the ancient Spanish dialects comes from the Mediterranean Phoenician settlers, merchants and sailors, but it's that sort of things we'll never know…

You should learn it. Fear not, they have us very in our heads that almost no one wants to learn Spanish because it is veryy difficult, and if they do it is to have sex with a "Latina", besides the crushing influence of English everywhere, people even get ashamed to speak Spanish (but that is another subject). People mostly support those who try to speak Spanish, only 70 million people have managed to have it as a second language, so having another one is cause for celebration. Seriously, learn it if possible. We speak it 500 million people in more than 20 countries with countless cultures and landscapes, in the Americas, Europe, Africa and even remnants in Asia and Oceania (even if it is no longer official). Leave behind prejudices and streotypes, only the image of my profile is of a forest in Mexico, near where I live. If you manage to learn Spanish, you will unlock half the world, believe me, you will not regret it.

Hey, to the man who made this video, I know it's been 10 months since you uploaded this and you probably won't see this comment, but don't worry about the comments a lot of spanish speakers are writing about the pronunciation, it's understandable, and if it's not you're first language, of course pronunciation would sound different from a native, but I think you did a good jod. Keep it up with the great videos :) ok bye
Es la mejor comparación compartida, hasta ahora en KZread, de un mismo texto conforme a la evolución del latín, hasta la era moderna. ¡Muchas gracias!

Castellano moderno y castellano medieval.
Amazing! I like the fact that many of these languages at first sounded similar to Latin (from which they come from) yet so different.
I just realized that dies Saturni and dies Sol (Sun) changed to Sabado and Domingo, while English still keeps the old Latin days (SaturDay and SunDay) 😳

His pronunciation is not very good. In order to speak fast in Spanish you need to use the 5 vowels we have. A e I o u. Those letters have lots of sounds in English but in Spanish each one has a single sound. The way Spanish words are structured allows you to speak faster because most of the times you alternate between vowels and consonants. In the case of two consonants you will only find 2. So you never have to pronounce words with multiple consonants in other languages. So it's not hard to speak fast in Spanish if you just use the 5 vowel system. The problem is that he struggled with the words because of his foreigner accent (from a Spanish point of view) Just trying to read fast won't do the trick

Great work! The history and diversity of the Spanish language are fascinating. Greetings from Argentina.
The overall tone you are using is more Italian than Castilian.
And as you can plainly see, the pronunciation of the Spanish jota sound evolved hundreds of years after the the end of the reconquista in 1492, thereby clearly debunking the myth that the Spanish jota sound was influenced be Mozarabic.
As someone who speaks Spanish as a second language, I really felt like this was an Italian reading up until the last part. I could get a few more words each time around then it was like sentences just showed up out of nowhere.

I have a copy of Don Quixote in my house which I have read many times and is written in Early Modern Spanish. (I speak Spanish natively) And while there are some words here and there which are hard to understand, most of the writing is completely intelligible with Modern Spanish. That being said, there are many different forms of Modern Spanish (I speak Venezuelan Spanish) and some dialects may contain different elements in vocabulary and grammar that either distance themselves from older Spanish or bring themselves closer.

Language evolution looks great! 😊
I read Don Quijote years ago, painstakingly, joyfully, and lovingly, page by page. My peers thought it was bizarre that I favored Cervantes over Shakespeare, but I did -- I just did! And get this: while climbing in the Colombian Andes back in the 70s in my agronomist job in el Risaralda, I encountered people whose language was peppered with words and phrases that one could call Quijote-isms. This was a thrilling experience for me. And they reminded me of some really isolated folks up in the Appalachians (also in the 70s) who English was also reflective of a bygone era. Btw, even the opening sentence was recognizable as the fabled opening of our beloved novel. One of my absolutely favorite eras is that of the Germanic Visigoths and the ensuing evolution of Spanish! That's where the phenomenon of language change is a real humdinger, and well worth the study. ❤
