In my opinion, this is one of Disney's most underrated movies and was always one of my favorites as a kid. However, nowadays it's hard to ignore the fact the all the creatures in this movie lived in different time periods and In different places and would have never met each other.

this is one of my all time fav movies and it got me into dinosaurs long before Jurassic Park did. My fav scene is when Aladar stumbles across the herd and is blown away by Baileen's sheer size, considering it's the first time in his life he sees a sauropod (very large long-necked herbivores) and a Brachiosaur at that (believed for a long time to be the largest living creature to have walked the Earth)

The "dig up water from a dry lake/stream bed" is actually 100% a real thing. If you are in a dry stream bed you want to try and find a bend in it's course, you will dig on the _outside edge_ of the bend and preferably under a shady spot if there are nearby trees. That will give you the best chance of finding water if there is no clean standing water source avalible. (Obviously purify it if you have the means to do so)

That's precisely why animals like elephants dig up the soil in dried out river beds during the Dry Season, because there's usually still some groundwater/wet soil below, esp in spots where plants grow that are still green.

Regarding the meteor, I always assumed it was a small one- not the one “that killed the dinosaurs”. Like little meteors may happen any time or seasonally like a hurricane.

Nice theory, but I don't think meteors THAT big are seasonal- even then, theory holds up perfectly.

The Carnosaur is portrayed as mindless, but it is very much aware that if it gets into a fight with a pack, it will get killed or heavily injured. The way it pounced when spotted a loose dino and went after it, separating it from the group is probably the most accurate any movie ever got when it comes to carnivores hunting. It's more mind games, intimidation tactics and weighing of options than actual fighting.

Carnivores have to risk their lives to get something to eat if they can't get a quick and easy kill, so it is a very accurate portrayal indeed! And I don't mean they'll get killed in a fight with their prey, more so that almost any injury would spell death later on as it would hinder their hunting capabilities and maybe even make THEM an easy kill for something else.

IKR? Despite being the antagonists, the Carnotaurs aren't portrayed as bloodthirsty rampaging monsters, at first the pair are simply trailing the herd, only eating those that wander away from the herd or those that collapse from exhaustion, such as the dead Stygimoloch, and when Bruton causes a cave-in and takes one of the Carnotaurs down with him, the surviving one (who I guess is the male) leaves immediately instead of trying to break through the rocks to get to Aladar's gang. And later in the gorge, the Carnotaur initially rushes in to try and spook the herd into scattering so that he can pick off the stragglers, but he wisely backs off when the herd stands together, only for him to go after the lone Kron, who is much easier prey. In other words, the Carnotaurs in this movie are extremely realistic predators, so kudos to the writers.

@@clarklaw6416 Yes, defensive prey animals, especially herd animals, can be vicious and spiteful. I believe it's water buffalo that will actively trample threats and even dip into tall grass to ambush them. Also as mentioned in another comment, it doesn't take a dramatic injury to reduce a predator's chance of future feeding and by extent survival. Not provoking the herd is the choice for anything smart enough to have made it to adulthood.

One of my favorite Disney movies. something interesting about this movie is, originally, the Carnotuars were supposed to have dialogue but the film makers thought they'd be more intimidating without speaking

I don’t know exactly which paper you are referring to, but dinosaurs being capable swimmers has been known for quite some times, since the trackways were probably a dead giveaway. If you were referring to the new Spinosaurus paper (the one that argues for an semi-aquatic lifestyle and not the one arguing against it), I believe that that one only examined spinosaurids. If you were referring to a different paper, could you please tell me the title, since links don’t work? Would appreciate it

My sister used to read Steven King as an elementary student (she wasn't allowed to have the books, so that made them all the more interesting to her) and was quickly desensitized to horror movies and such. In her opinion, the scariest monsters were the ones that couldn't talk or be reasoned with because there was no way to escape them. I disagreed with them being scarier (not about them wrecking you) and basically said what Chris did about them being driven by their nature (werewolves can't help it similar to a carnivore). I thought monsters that could talk were a lot scarier, because it's not JUST following its nature, it's actively deceiving/luring/trapping you. It KNOWS you're a sentient being and still enjoys toying with it's prey.

Man, I still have my old VHS tape of this movie somewhere. I remember always being in awe at the meteor scene every time I watched it, my little kid brain never realized those backgrounds weren't CGI so I used to think this was the best-looking animated thing ever.

I also have a VHS and honestly the CGI just of the dinos still stands out and holds up better than a lot of dino CGI these days.

6:11 I always had the impression that it was just "a meteor" not "the world-ending meteor", because it wasn't really that big the one on the movie, the real one was gargantuam

I always wondered why almost everybody assumes it would be the big, dinosaur ending one. As if there would have been no smaller impacts during several hundred millions of years, maybe similar in scale to the 1908 Tunguska one.

It's still more than big enough to have killed all the dinosaurs we see in the movie though. Quite a few of the 'small' meteors are bigger than an iguanodon ..and for reference, you are just a little bit bigger than an iguanodon's HEAD. ALL of those meteors were MASSIVE and would have caused WAY more destruction than we see in the movie

I remember having the film on VHS (I also remember that the opening sequence was included as a trailer on the Tarzan VHS), and then watched it again a couple of years ago. I like the film well enough. The CGI for the dinosaurs still holds up: it still looks impressive, and the combination of highly detailed CGI with live-footage makes the dinosaurs look realistic for the setting. Also, how can you forget the soundtrack? The music that plays during the opening sequence is great.

This was one of the first dvd's i got as a kid way back when it came out. I actually just watched it on Netflix a month ago just to see how terrible it was lol The thing that drove me FUCKING INSANE though was the main menu. Everytime you changed (from scene selection, to settings, to the stupid game that came with the disc that you could play on the DVD player) panels in the menu, it would play this overly long dramatic cinematic of the carnataurs chasing a smaller dinosaur, crashing the next off eggs(EXCEPT FOR 1 EGG!!!! 1 EGG BARELY MISSES THEIR CLAWS AND LIVES TOCTELL THE TALE!!!!) Before the menu actually shows up and let's you select anything. I'm pretty sure the cinematic is like 20 seconds in length, and the volume is WAY louder than anything else on the disc.

It's never stated that the meteor in the movie is the extinction level event we're all somewhat familiar with. This meteor seems to be a localized event, and with no where near the same impact. Also, the ticking clock is the herd, dehydrated and starving to death. The "villain" is actually a good leader, not a likable one, but he can't allow the weak and elderly to determine their pace. Aladar is unique in that he seems to possess a moral compass common to humans, unlike Kron, who naturally behaves more like an actual animal would. He does what he has to in order for the herd to survive, and if the weak few slow down predators, then their sacrifice is, to him, justified.

5:10 actually iguanodonts were pretty good swimmers, I mean they have a long muscular tail that would have propelled them through the water very effectively plus there is even a tipe of iguanodont callen lurdusaurus that is theorized to be semi-aquatic. All of that is avoiding the fact that the majority of animals today can and do swim so it makes no sense that dinosaurs couldn’t

@@theman3274 for a long time we assumed elephants could not swim. Then a circus boat sank, and days later a swimming elephant was spotted, allegedly still wearing the circus hat. Read the story as a kid, never cared about verification back then, so it might be bogus. Elephants DO swim, however.

My mind always auto-corrected that the asteroid was a much smaller less significant one and not the world ender solely because an entire movie happened after it. If it was the world ender and it was in view of Aldar he'd surely be vaporized from heat or shot into space via ejecta or turned to red mist from the shock wave.

I think Dinosaur is one of Walt Disney’s best films, I say that because of how it’s made because the characters and the combination of live action backgrounds goes very well together it was the surprise of my life when watching it for the first time as a kid. The designs for the dinosaurs and backgrounds are simply awesome because it's clear to see they worked hard to make it good and add a lot of detail.

To be fair, that meteor is probably not supposed to be the same one that killed the dinosaurs, seeing as there is a Brachiosaurus which lived only during the Jurassic and the Iguanodon became extinct during the Early Cretaceous - so you could argue that the sun wasn't blocked by dust particles because this meteor wasn't as big, so its impact was less severe. And the reason why the raptors and Carnotaurus don't speak might be because Disney went the same route as The Land Before Time: herbivores have one universal language and carnivores have another language.

I watched this movie every day as a kid. Part of my obsession with dinosaurs when I was little. People have probably forgotten about this movie but it still holds a special place in my life.

Say what you want but this movie holds a special place in little me’s heart. It got me passionate about dinosaurs Edit: I say this because it’s the first dinosaur movie I saw as I was almost 2 when this movie came out so when I started having a conscience, this was the first one I remember seeing and Jurassic park was after

Same dude- I’m pretty sure I saw this movie before Jurassic Park as a kid- it’s always been a favorite- mostly since there have barely been any good or decent dinosaur movies- the only ones I can think of was this and Jurassic Park series ((not including the documentaries)) I’ll always love this movie 🤧🤧 plus it was such good animation for it’s time- at least that’s what I remember thinking and stuff Edit; I forgot about the Land Before time series 😭 that too I love that one

This movie was a huge part of my childhood, I hardcore watched this as a kid. I recently rewatched it for the first time in about 7 years I think, not as good as I remember but still a somewhat enjoyable film with decently aged animation, some cool action scenes, but the best part was definitely the music.

This movie was one of “The Greats” for 90s babies/kids. Dinosaurs was memorable, the animation was lit(at the time) and the story line was good plus funny.

This movie is more similar in a lot of ways to the Land Before Time. A kind hearted protagonist separated from his family who meets up with a group of different species of dinosaurs to get to the Great Valley/Nesting Grounds, the amazing, lush, carnivore free zone surrounded by walls. They even have the protagonist teaming up with a stubborn character, the fight with the protagonist and the stubborn character over which way is the correct way to lead the group to Dino paradise with the stubborn character being wrong, and the climax being the dinosaurs teaming up to take down Sharp Tooth/Carnitaur.

I like this movie way better because to me it gets more things right The antagonists for instance: the carnotaurus acts like a real carnivore, going after the weak but knowing when to retreat to avoid further injuries while stopping once its hunger is satisfyied, being pushed to further extremes because of the draught everyone in this world is experiencing. The Sharp Tooth on the other hand seems like an obstacle rather than an animal, that motherfucker is in the middle of an earthquake being tossed around and hit with volcanic fumes and hes still trying to eat two baby dinosaurs that wont keep him fed for more than five minutes

That's because "family movies" aimed at kids, most generic action movies, crime/detective/cop shows, romantic comedies etc follow cookie-cutter tropes and clichés. Tropes in itself are not bad... they're the base stones of storytelling, and they help the audience (esp small kids) to identify who a character is, esp in cartoons/animations where each character in a group fills a certain role (the leader, the mentor, the rebel, the nurturing protector, the crazy/goofy one for comedy relief, the grumpy one with the heart of gold, etc).

Nah this film had younger me in a chokehold. Watching this movie almost every day to the point the vhs tape almost broke. When life was simpler😌

Can we take a moment to say how amazing this animation is. It’s honestly better than some current animation

Favorite movie of all time. I purposely wait for a year to relive the excitement as if I'm watching it for the first time and despite it's faults this video existing or not I love it. CGI aged well. Kron's character is appreciated. Bruton's redemption. Even Neera had a little development if you noticed that she was on her brother's side then as we see her look at Aladar a more she realizes her brother is wrong. Aladar does have charm, kindness, bravery, and can be a bit naive but has enough wits to get around.

Nah this movie should be placed in a library and kept nice and safe. I think the animations were really good for it’s time.

Honestly I love the behavior of the Carnotaurus. It doesn’t attack after the rockslide because it’s already frustrated and injured. It also doesn’t attack the herd once they retaliate

This was my favourite movie as a kid, I watched it multiple times during a day! It’s funny to look back on it now, even though I still love it. It came out the day before I was born, so my mom used to joke that it was made for me (I was obsessed with dinosaurs ). Also, really glad he didn’t sin the part where he calls out for someone to answer after the meteor, that always made me cry!

1:30 This wasn't a particularly great movie, but the soundtrack during this sequence is absolutely glorious. Someone at Disney said "Could we get music that sounds like Jurassic Park AND The Lion King at the same time?" and James Newton Howard was just 'gotcha covered.' He's a treasure who really doesn't get enough recognition.

I'm loving the sarcasm and forced dinosaur sex jokes in this one LOL

I do have a theory as to why the carnivores don't speak like the other dinosaurs. Basically it all comes down to perspective. You typically wouldn't talk to your dinner, nor would you care if it talked back since that meal is the only thing keeping you alive in the harsh life of a predator.

So I had the Japanese dvd of this movie and it had extra games on it (idk if English dvds had this too). One of them was this maze game with jump scares which scared the shit out of me

A lot of the English DVDs had mini games. I never had the English DVD of Dinosaur so I cannot verify if it had the same game you're talking about, but I remember having the special anniversary edition of Bambi and playing a game where Bambi and Thumper see who can slide the farthest on the ice without sliding too far and hitting the snowbank.

Honestly one of my favourite films as a kid. The scientific inaccuracy of these species living at the same time and the same areas though... its still an enjoyable film.

This was my favorite childhood movie growing up. The VHS tape is most likely still at my mothers house. I loved this movie. Definitely will put my kids onto this movie when I find a place to watch it!

An underrated film I watched this movie sm as a child and I watch it on occasion cause for 2000 the cgi still looks pretty good specifically on the dinosaurs. The carno was definitely a better choice than the T. rex

Fun Fact: Originally, they were planning on having them be T-Rexes, but Disney realized that said dinosaur was overused, so they decided on one that wasn't well known then.

@@redlycan5064 yes I know that actually lol and I think it was the best choice possible that they changed it for Carnotaurus. This movie made this my favorite Dino for how cool it looked not even the Jurassic World Series could compare their design of the carno to Disneys Carno so cool and demonic looking.

You know, regardless of the quality of the film itself, there was nothing quite as jarring as remembering that beautiful opening sequence giving me whiplash the moment someone started talking. I don't why, but it just felt it was going to be a little more interesting before that point, and from there on, it just becomes another animated kids flick, with a moment or two.

From what I understand, for most of pre-production, the intention was for the animals to be nonverbal. But dialogue was shoehorned in late in the process, which is why it so often feels completely unnecessary. And why all the best sequences have no talking.

At least with Dinosaur they had time to reanimate and make the characters actually look like they’re talking. Walking With Dinosaurs literally just edited voices over pre-existing footage making it feel like a really bad fan abridged dub

As much as ik what this channel is and as big of a fan as I am, AND as much of what you said is true and makes sense, nothing will change the fact that this is one of Disney's forgotten gems and one of my all time favs. I grew up watching this and even know I get hits of nostalgia all through the film.

Anything other than a 10 sin counter is a 1,000 sins on sincinema. This movie is an amazing piece of nostalgic work.

Oof, this is awkward. Actually, a lot of dinosaurs swam very well including Iguanodon. They were notably fast swimmers.

I rewatched this not long ago and dude, it's a legit good film! I always mention it and no one seems to have seen it, so glad to see it sinned. The beginning carnataur scene still makes me feel like crying...

This movie definitely affected me when i was a kid! I remember being so scared and crying so much during the whole movie, but loved it so much I watched It all the time. Also had a ton of rubber hand puppets of their heads from McDonalds happy meals!!

Carnos didn't speak because the producer wanted them to appear more menacing, they did try it with them speaking and it was apparently weird.

Man, I broke the DVD of this as a kid because I watched it so many times. Was, and still is one of my favorite Disney/dinosaur movies!!

I'm so glad you guys sinned this film! I remember loving this movie as a kid, but kinda forgot it existed. Now as a jaded adult the "animals talking and acting like people" gimmick has me grimacing, but I still think the movie holds up well in story and animation. The animation is stellar; I was ignorant of the "live action" film technique that you describe. Either way, if the movie WAS made by compositing CGI onto live action background plates, it's still a seamless visual experience to me.

This movie is one I have very fond memories of as a kid. It has set the standard for what my favourite dinosaur would be the rest of my life : the Carnosaurs.

Clearly not that much of a favorite as Carnotaurus (meat bull.) deserves much more RESPECT ON ITS MUTHAFUCKIN NAME!!!!!

Finally. Thank you for uploaded this request. I've been waiting three years for this right after my brother requested The Emperor's New Groove that came out by Disney the same year in 2000, and it finally happend.

I've wanted this sinned for years. Seeing this is like watching your favorite band making a surprise appearance at a concert.

I remember seeing this as a kid and I was amazed of how realistic it looked. seeing it now and it really doesn't look that impressive just shows how far CGI have come

5:13 "Ah yes, Iguanadons, like most dinosaurs: known for their incredible swimming ability." I hate to be an absolute dick, and spoil your fun (really sorry) but actually, yes, a recent study showed that most dinosaurs including large sauropods, hadrosaurs, t. rex, and some ankiylosaurs (I'd guess iguanadon are among those dinosaurs) were relatively good swimmers, of course not all dinosaurs and I could be wrong in any of them because I didn't read the paper, but I'm 99% Iguanadons were good swimmers, the sin count shuld decrease 1 (I think)

This movie taught my brain about sight-sound delay for distant explosions, and made my nightmares that much more terrifying lmao

5:45 that's not a triceratops that's a pachyrhinosaurus one great thing about this movie is that instead of just having classic and stock dinosaurs like t rex triceratops apatosaurus stegosaurus and so one it has other dinosaurs like pachyrhinosaurus itself carnotaurus styrachosaurus stiggymoloch and microceratus showing the audience that there are more dinosaurs then just t rex and so on Edit also why Aladar wasn't gord was because unlike other ceratopcian dinosaurs pachyrhinosaurus had a bump or better known a boss om its nose instead of a horn so that was a smart move on the film crew to use a ceratopcian like pachyrhinosaurus for this sceen

I miss watching these as a Kid and it's great that since I still have a lot of my Old Movies, my Kids also get to enjoy them now as well. But honestly watching them now, as an Adult... I'm realizing that there's a lot of pretty messed up Things that happen in these seemingly "Innocent" movies. Some of these examples I just enjoy(ed) as a Child and some are examples of Messed up Things I've never noticed before until recently. (Recently = Past 5 Years or less.) *Land Before Time* , which is basically just a Story of Herbivore Dinosaur "Kids" finding and eventually befriending a Carnivorous Dinosaur "Kid" that they deem the Name "Sharp-Tooth" to. They then spend the rest of the Time trying to find ways to prevent their New Friend from eventually & Inevitably Mur*ering them Brutally by Mauling and Maiming them until they Forever Sleep... *Franklin the Turtle* , with the Nerdy Turtle who would've never made it through the Likes of High School in Reality. The Two Most Ingeniously Genius Lab Rats of all Time: *Pinky & the Brain!* Kinda Self Explanatory with them being Experimental Lab Rats. *WishBone the Dog.* Who apparently either had Telepathic Abilities, often speaking to the Audience via his Mind. OR We OURSELVES were literally, actually inside the Dog's Mind, able to Hear, Translate, & Understand everything He's "Saying" or Thinking to Himself and about Others... Which is a Total Invasion of Privacy and a Complete MindF*ck in the very least tbh. 🤔 *The Gargoyles* Cartoon, with the different Colored Gargoyles who unfortunately turned to Stone wherever they happened to be Standing whenever the Sun rose. So they always had to make sure that they made it back to their Respective Posts on their Buildings/Structures or they would be Vulnerable and easily Destroyed by their Enemies as Stone Statues. *Homeward Bound:* With the Three Runaway Pets that made it back Home again, despite all the Odds being stacked against them. Shadow (The Golden Retriever), Chance (The Pitt Bull), and Sassy.(The Cat). And I'm sure there's a lot more but this Comment is already Two Commas Short of a Harry Potter Book, so I'm just going to leave it at those and let all y'all take it from Here! 👋🏻😉

This movie played a huge part on why I like dinosaurs so much to this day. I remember that sometimes, when I was a toddler, started 'roaring' akin to the scene where they drive off the Carno at the end lmao.

I love that as this was posted I rewatched this movie the night before. I logged onto youtube and saw this and said "no way". I will say this movie shaped my childhood and gave me the love for dinosaurs that I still have to this day, I almost became a paleontologist. But I will say that this movie is awesome, it gives a great message, and it has creatures that most kids can fall in love with, I know I'll be showing this movie to my kids. I think this movie is definitely underrated, since all the work that was put into it, just to make the backgrounds, the characters, all of it is just amazing to me. This is why I can always watch this movie, this movie will be in my heart forever. This movie and Avatar are my top two favorite movies that I can rewatch over and over again!

Remember having this on VCR when I was a kid ,deep film man, teaches you about bravery and sacrifice and love, how dare you sin this masterpiece

Growing up, I always thought this movie was the best (maybe cause it had dinosaurs as the stars), when I got older I realized its only just good. Now its infamous for being underrated, it has a place in my memories for how 2000s it is. And no matter what you say, its still better than the Lion King remake.

I LOVED this movie as a kid. I remember we had the DVD which came in a 2 part set and I used to feel so cool having to change DVDs midway throught the movie. I've been meaning to watch it again, this time without having to pause in the middle.

Been waiting a while for dis one.

This movie is so under-effin-rated!! The music in it alone is worthy of standing next to other Disney scores!!

This movie is interesting in that it’s really gorgeous and stunning but also really forgettable

This is still my most favourite dinosaur film. One of the reasons i started to like dinosaurs as a kid, still is.

7:57 There is a clock they're racing actually, it's called "this massive herbivore herd has been traveling without sufficient food or water for a long time, so they need to get to the nesting grounds before they all dehydrate and/or starve". Herds of real animals will also typically leave their old, sick, and wounded behind. It's harsh, but those vulnerable members can attract predators in addition to slowing them down as a whole. Kron is more of a realist than anything until his stubbornness and ego start to get the better of him.

This film has so much nostalgia for me and my childhood. I watched it on a VHS tape so much that it actually went black and white.

One of my favorite movies ever. And you picked it to pieces.

So anyone notice the Moses overtones. Like the eggs adventure at the beginning is similar to the perilous basket journey in Prince of Egypt. Then he’s raised by the old leader and his daughter. Eventually he reunites with his own kind and leads them through the desert to the Promised Land. Sure Aladar’s not escaping captivity but he did escape the life of annual monkey matchmaking

this movie was mostly praised for its amazing CGI, like the dinosaurs are really well made, and so are the sounds made by them, but other then that, the story is mediocre, not bad of course cuz what else can you do with a realistic dinosaur movie, but it's good at what it does, and of course, the music is amazing

This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I insisted on running in circles on all fours through the entire end credits, pretending to be a dinosaur.

I still love this film. Still my favourite. Also you can tell they know nothing about dinosaurs because they didn't sin the more obvious flaws like how the carnotaurus was not that large in real life.

Well they might have thought it was because of stylistic choices (iguanadons don’t look like that, lemurs face is to human, etc.) plus Dino recreations change frequently according to the science of the time.

@@jon83chewy I remember reading Disney said the mammal that did exist in this time wasn't "marketable enough", hence the use of lemurs; which didn't exist until 5 million years AFTER the dinosaurs. Yet, we're talking about a company that made everything from talking candles to cups marketable lol.

This could’ve been a film about literally any ecosystem, dinosaurs just stuck because it would make an interested audience than the same message but say in Antarctica or other films had already made something similar. If this film was by any metric accurate, Carnotaurus wouldn’t have been an animal in this film, probably Baryonyx or some other theropod that lived alongside Iguanodons, not an abelisaurid that lived half the world away and not really in the same time period IIRC.

Assuming this is set at the end of the Cretaceous period then the only dinosaur I know for certain that should have been present was the ankylosaurus. All the other dinosaurs either went extinct earlier in the Cretaceous period like the iguanodon and the Carnotaurus or during the Jurassic period such as with brachiosaurus. And Archaeolemur turned up long after the dinosaurs died out.

Carnotaurus went extinct at some point in the Maastrichtian though, we know it was around at about 69 million years ago and it's not a stretch that it made it to the K-Pg extinction three million years later (66 Ma). As for members of the herd, it's a similar story for Pachyrhinosaurus (known to still be kicking at 68 Ma at least) and both Struthiomimus and Stygimoloch (or Pachycephalosaurus spinifer / wyomingensis if you prefer) made it to the very end of the Cretaceous. You are right that there's a ton of anachronisms in the film, just wanted to point out there were a couple more than just Ankylosaurus from the end Maastrichtian! Even then, you have the spatial issue to think about, with Carno in South America and Pachyrhinosaurus further north than Anky / Struth / Stygi...

I have only seen this as a preview about 100x as a kid because they put it at the beginning of every VHS before they released it.

I would have loved to have seen a whole movie like the first 5 minutes (I hear rumors all the time that's how this was going to be) and I always think how amazing that would've been. Just dinosaurs in awesome landscapes interacting off each other, no "modern" dialogue to kill the atmosphere.
