Thank you for making this video. I worked on the film for its entire production. I worked in Look Development: Dino skin, water, compositing, smoke, dust, and the meteor strike. The carnotaur and the river crossing scene were inspired by an exhibit at the LA natural history museum. As shown in the video, in the original story, the meteor happened at the end of picture and all the dinos died. After the story changed to have the meteor at the end of the first act and the dinos living happily ever after in "the Great Valley", we asked ourselves, "Didn't Don Bluth just do this story?" There was an underwater shot in the original introduction that I worked on that was scrapped because of an IDENTICAL shot in "The Land Before Time". The animation program that was to become "Maya" was developed for Dinosaur. After production and "Wildlife" being cancelled, the 3 to 4 hundred artists who worked on the project were fired. Again, thanks for putting together this video. It is a melancholy memory for me.

No matter how much a film is crtiticised it always has its fans that felt a big resonance with this film that was a highlight in their life. and i loved this film as much as i did in grade school, still my favorite dino movie ever, i still think the cgi is unmatched. It still looks beautiful today. I even wanted to direct a parody replica for a school recital, it didnt happen due to school not taking me seriously lol but i was so passionate about making movies series and animations because of that movie! I think The imaging aged well , its so believable , the merging of the background and the cgi! And i love the final story ! Your work is appreciated and didnt go to waste in my book!

Kinda upsets me how the wider public view dinosaurs as a topic for childrens entertainment, and all dinosaur movies, no matter how realistic or beautiful, have to be dumbed down for kids with talking dinosaur characters and side characters. That's the problem I have with disney and larger studios, they don't care about the passion people put into the project, if it isn't marketable or makes a lot of money it's worthless and either needs to be changed to check the boxes, or be scrapped all together. Like, im all for more fictional narratives with less realistic dinosaurs but like a slightly realistic silent film would've been so much better than what we got, depicting the lives of actual animals instead of simple happy going lizards that were aimed for kids

I love this movie as is, but yes it is a shame we didn’t get what could’ve been. But I say it’s a lot less acceptable for the Walking With Dinosaurs movie from 2013. At the very least the Disney movie took itself seriously and wasn’t dumbed down to trash like that one was. And yeah, it’s true it seems the general public only thinks two extremes for dinosaurs: make them talk with dumbed down dialogue for kids, or make them super violent monsters for action or horror….

Dinosaur was actually one of my favorite movies and I actually do like looking back at it and remembering how I used to believe that everything was animated and that they really did make the scenery so realistic until when I realized that the scenery was real while the dinosaurs were animated. Hearing all of this about the movie and how originally the movie was gonna be stop motion really did surprise me. Imagine if someday someone looks back at these concepts, scripts, and storylines and decides to actually make the Dinosaur movie using one of those original stories

“Why did they make a big deal out of talking dinosaurs?” Because the filmmakers didn’t want them to talk. That’s it. Movies and shows without dialogue exists and most are pretty damn good. The topic of dinosaurs aren’t exclusively for kids, and people/media/companies need to stop thinking that it is. I’ll end this by saying: I grew up with this movie and I still love it. I’ve played the ps2 game and I love it. But the fact remains that what could and should have been was invalidated and changed, against the filmmakers will, is kind of upsetting

@@kennethsatria6607 Disney's Dinosaur was very much intended for the family-friendly audience, with some elements of cheeky humor and a rather generic "don't give up" plotline. And while Kron and the Carnotaurs did give the film a touch of dark drama, there were lots of other segments that felt overly bubbly, and I personally don't think it mixed well. 2013 Walking with Dinosaurs is just worse in every way, no argument. But comparisons aside, Dinosaur had a lot of potential it didn't tap on.

I don't think we'll ever get a Dinosaur movie in the style of a silent documentary which is a shame. It's already been proven there's an audience that kind of film. I could do nothing but suffer in silence as he mentioned how audiences got all excited with the first trailer but got turned down the second they knew the dinosaurs would talk. And the thing is, I love the concept of a movie with talking dinosaurs, but only if it was planned to be that way. I didn't mind the dialogue in the WWD movie until I found out it was meant to have no dialogue at all until some dumb executive thought that they wouldn't be relatable if the dinos didn't talk I love Dinosaur. It's one of my favorite Disney movies. But the missed potential of a dino-doc like film with that animation quality gives me mixed feelings.

I genuinely believe the project would've greatly benefited from a, for a lack of a better term, "Ghibli" approach to it's story: Mundane is beautiful. Trying to force the project into these pre-existing formats and have love interests, comedy reliefs and action scenes.. just made everything feel that bit more artificial and redacted from the atmosphere surrounding the actual animals, the dinosaurs. The mystery & majesty is the biggest allure in knowing dinosaurs were once real, and art should appreciate that, instead of trying to shoehorn it into something we have conventionalized and normalized. I don't by any means dislike the final product, but it's a pale shadow of the immense potential they had on their hands. Disagreements over the dinosaurs talking vs. not talking seems to me like a culmination of these clashing perspectives.

Tibbet should not have gone to Disney. Instead, he should have chosen or optioned other animation studios. We know Disney will never ever accept this kind of concept and idea. Tibbet should try reconsidering his plot and concept. It's an artistic masterpiece and the story, the plot, the characters and the transition in the ending are undoubtedly creative and compelling! Honestly, Dinosaur 2000 was one of my favorite, childhood movies. But Dinosaurs by Phil Tibbet is now my current, compelled, dinosaur film, that I will pay for to watch and see how it executes well. Please, Tibbet.. reconsider your conceptual masterpiece and make that stop motion film! I want to watch it. Even though I'm the first and, currently, the only movie fan, who wants to watch your film, I'm certain and sure.. that everyone else, who had discovered your concept for this film, are interested and intrigued too. I hope you will still make this film in the future. It's not too late. We NEED and WANT a dinosaur film that is not kid-friendly. I'm sorry for the kids, okay? It seems like both Disney’s Dinosaur and the more recent Walking With Dinosaurs film had the same thing going on behind the scenes. Both were films that were meant to be visually told stories, with no voices whatsoever, and with the use some of the most amazing effects ever put to film, but then some creatively bankrupt studio executive came in and said “No, you need to make them talk and/or sing because it makes us money”, thus taking what was being made and watering it down in some way with voices and dialogue. I gotta say, though, I can forgive the Disney film, not because it’s something I have fond memories of, but at the very least the voices and dialogue were delivered with sincerity and it took itself seriously, and any semblance of jokes, while they weren’t the best, were nothing cringeworthy either. That and the voices were all unique and fun to listen to. Can’t say the same for WWD, which arguably put a lot more effort in using the knowledge known at the time (since the knowledge we had back in 2013 was a far cry from what we had back in 2000), but because of those previously mentioned studioexecusaurus boomerensis doing what they do best, we ended up getting a film with super annoying voices and dialogue that was the complete opposite: Absolutely watered down garbage dialogue with some of the stupidest most below basic jokes, all of which just looks down on its target audience like they’re society’s biggest idiots. It’s really a shame that we had this whole process going on *TWICE* and it only got worse the second time…. Honestly, we really do deserve better with dinosaurs in movies like this (and in general). I won’t lie I would like to see Phil Tippet make his dinosaur movie, without having creatively bankrupt money-eaters standing over him, or anyone who wants to try it.

I wish Disney would revisit Dinosaur these days or in the future for a sequel or remake. In fact there’s a lot of Disney films like the Black Cauldron that I wish got remakes in this age of sequels and reboots. These films never did quite well and deserve a second chance to give people something different. However it doesn’t seem like Disney will ever do another dinosaur themed film ever again. With the revival of the Jurassic Park franchise and the failure of the good dinosaur, a dinosaur film by them isn’t guaranteed to be the success they would want it to be. I just realised that we really only have 2 dinosaur films from the biggest company on earth. That’s just mind boggling to me.

Glad I found this video, I’ve been seeing a lot of videos reacting or analyzing this movie recently and I’m happy that you showed the lengthy development of this movie. I always found this movie’s production to be Fascinating and just how much it changed from a stop motion film to cgi animated film. I genuinely had no idea that two people died during the filming of the live action segments of the film, was not expecting that part at all lol. Absolutely great work! 👍

16:33 This is so funny to me, because even as a kid, I thought the first 6 minutes of the movie were the best part, and everything went downhill the second the lemurs were introduced. The Carnosaurus chase sequence on its own thrilled me and had me on the edge of my seat, wondering if the little dinosaur contained within the egg would survive to adulthood if its existence was under such threat before it was even born. Disney really underestimated how many kids LOVE nature documentaries, BECAUSE of all their drama and violence, not despite it. Survival horror as a genre is super compelling, and the prehistoric world as re-imagined and reconstructed by humans minds is the best setting I can think of for such a film. What a shame that the only animation studios large enough to undertake a mature story just wanted to dumb it down "for kids." :/ Kids can feel it when adults condescend to them, and movie plot lines are no different. I certainly noticed. Bambi and Fantasia were among my most rewatched movies in elementary school; I would have adored a no-dialogue animated movie about Dinosaurs in a similar vein as presented in the trailer. Hell, I'd enjoy that now too, lol.

Dinosaurs having lips is true for Saurischian dinosaurs like Sauropods like Brachiosaurus & non avian Theropods like T. Rex, avian Theropods like modern birds do have beaks on the other hand, but for Ornithischian dinosaurs like Iguanodon they have evidence for beaks, so that’s why it’s still weird to put lips on an Iguanodon in that sense.

I forgot what the title was but I had it on DVD before I moved.

I think it should also be noted, the fact that one of the directors of Dinosaur, was also behind the clustf**k that was We're Back! At least it's nice you were able to actually scour up more details about the many alternate storylines. Sure it does feel like a missed opportunity, but at the same time you can't really expect everything to be an original creation. I feel too many people have put their expectations too high or sometimes I feel like they want to pander to the high-elite snobs who need to think everything needs perfection or everything needs to be original. At least this movie still takes itself seriously and does know when to be intense when it needed to, and at least this was more better executed compared with the Walking with Dinosaurs 2013 film.

Imagine if we got a version of this movie where the characters don’t talk, but this time the main character is an Edmontosaurus and he gets adopted by a huge family of Purgatorius which are believed to be close relatives to Primates, and then later they come across a herd of dinosaurs that consist of other Edmontosaurus, and also other species like Triceratops, Ankylosaurus, Ornithomimus, Pachycephalosaurus, Thescelosaurus, Therizinosaurus & Alamosaurus all in the same herd together, and the main threats are T. Rexes (which would be the killer of the main Edmontos parents at the beginning of the movie) also Dakotaraptor’s, Quetzalcoatlus & Deinosuchus, and it would’ve taken place in Late Cretaceous North America (there’s evidence for Therizinosaurids being in North America during the Late Cretaceous albeit its somewhat scarce) and the animals would all be up to date in terms of paleontological accuracy.

Damn! The production of Disney’s dinosaur feels like a what could’ve been story sure I think other animated dinosaur movies have had worse productions especially the walking with dinosaurs movie but I feel like the concept of could’ve been really cool but unfortunately for Disney it was at the wrong place at the wrong time we really haven’t had an animated dinosaur movie where theirs no talking and the dinosaurs are just normal dinosaurs with the exception of the rite of springs segment in fantasia I mean it happened with don bluth with land before time, it happened here with Disney with dinosaur, it happened with the bbc and animal logic with the walking with dinosaurs movie and it happened with Pixar with the good dinosaur I think it’s just because corporate executives don’t really think a silent animated movie with dinosaurs wouldn’t be that appealing for audiences the only animated media I can think where the dinosaurs didn’t talk were the shows walking with dinosaurs (but then again that show had a narrator) and Genndy Tartakovskys Primal
